The Tempting Touristy Places in Munnar in Kerala

A misty, lush green hill station, Munnar in Kerala is carpeted with emerald-green tea plantations moulded, mowed and shaped like ornamental shrubbery. The blanket of clouds cosily envelops Munnar, offering a magnificent low mountain scenery. Once a favourite haunt for the Britishers, Munnar today is the commercial centre of some of the world's highest tea-growing lands. Today Munnar hill station is today visited by tourists from all over the world.

Following are some of the tourist places in Munnar:

. Mattupetty: Tucked in the hills of Munnar and very near to the Anamudi Peak, lies Mattupetty hill station. It enjoys a verdant scenery and feels the fabulous climate. The main attraction of Mattupetty is the dam and the lake here. The still water of the dam reflects the image of tea garden around. You can engage yourself in the various water sport activities or enjoy the enchanting sightseeing of this picturesque dam. Ebullient treks can be taken to Shola forest. Just a few miles away from the dam lies a beautiful lake that will take you the world of calmness and peace. Mattupetty is also known as 'Cattle Village', the name derived from the famous Indo Swiss farm project launched in 1963. you can see hundreds of varieties of high-yielding cattle in this farm.

. Kundala: Perched at a height of 1700 m from the sea level, Kundala is about 20 km from Munnar. It sees the cherry blossoms appear twice in a year. The famous Neela Kurunji that blooms every 12 years also flowers in the Kundala hills. There is also an artificial dam here which is known to be the Asia's first Arch Dam. Boating facilities are available on rent to make your trip more memorable.

. Eravikulam National Park: It is spread over an expansive area of 97sq km along the crest of Western ghats in Idukki district. It is one of the most important destinations of Munnar. The national park is divided into three parts- the core area, the buffer area and the tourism area. In 1975 Eravikulam was declared as a wildlife sanctuary and then in 1978 it was given the status of a national park. The sight of variety of orchids is the speciality of the park. Many rare and endangered species of flora and fauna are also seen here.

. Top Station: As the name suggests, Top station is the highest point of Munnar. You can enjoy the panoramic view of Western ghats from here.

. Echo point: Go to the Echo point, shout as loud as you can and then wait for sometime. Interestingly you will hear your echo, hence giving the place its name.

. Elephant Lake: It is and idyllic picnic location which has a dam and a reservoir. Photography fanatics can pick some really beautiful photos from this spot.

The best time to visit Munnar in Kerala is during the months of September and October.
