The Radio Hangs On Even In The Face Of More Modern MediaSubmitted by galaxywd
In our world today it is just amazing that we can have access to hundreds of cable or satellite television channels and still come away claiming there is nothing on we want to watch. Is there something wrong with us these days that we have such an insatiable appetite for entertainment to the extent we are never satisfied and content with all that is available to us? We have simply become so spoiled to all the variety we have now that it is unimaginable for us to go back to the days when all we had were a few different stations on the radio to choose from.
In those days the radio was such an amazing invention that people were thrilled with anything that they had the opportunity to hear. Some things were enjoyable and some probably were not so much. News was a big thing on the radio then because it gave everyday people the ability to receive first hand, in their home, the latest news worthy events. As years went by more and more stations were available with a wider variety of programming, but music became the main source of entertainment on the radio especially after television was invented. You might have thought that television could have made the radio almost obsolete but it hardly affected it all. People still listened while they worked or when driving in their car and probably some older people preferred it. It was quite a few years after television was developed before everyone could afford to have one and reception was available on a wide scale. People still use radio for the same things today. We use it to listen to the news, listen for traffic jams and wrecks on our way to and from work, as well as just listening to the music or a talk show of some kind. You can hear religious programming of all sorts too. Even with the development of the walkman, the MP3 player and the Ipod, the radio is still a favorite with many teenagers. The newest technology, satellite radio has to be subscribed to. For a certain amount of money each month or by contract, you can listen to radio programming that is virtually commercial free. You can hear the latest music, older music, sporting events, and talk shows from Howard Stern to Martha Stewert. The reception for satellite radio is remarkable because you can listen to the same station for endless miles without interruption because it is broadcast from satellite instead of towers. It seems that we will never really fall out of love with our radios no matter what other great inventions might come along. About the Author
