Installing a Basketball Goal - 3 Basic Options

Submitted by diamondrocket

Now that there is a lifelong basketball player installed in the White House some Americans are considering a basketball goal at their home. It is a great choice for staying in shape as well as entertaining friends and family who might want to come over for a friendly game. But how should you install your new goal? .

The first choice we will explore is to affix a goal directly to the outside of your house. Naturally the first consideration with this option is whether or not there is a good place to do so. Houses with level driveways and plenty of space above the garage door are ideal for this. However it can cause problems. The ball (and many a player) will be banging into the wall above, around and beneath the goal. This can leave marks and harm the appearance of your home. Another problem is that this goal will not be height adjustable. If you have young children you cannot lower it for them to play and, if you initially install it lower, you cannot raise it as they grow.

The next choice for a basketball goal at your home is to permanently plant one in concrete beside your driveway or patio. This option makes the playing area feel more "real" and offers the players more options for their game. More options mean more fun and that means the goal will actually be used. However this option does not come without its problems. Since its permanent you have decided that the next owner of your home, should you decide to sell it later, will also want a goal. Also, if placed next to the driveway as many such goals are, it can occasionally get in the way. It becomes a new hazard to avoid when backing out and if you have lots of visitors at once it can cut down on your parking options.

A portable goal addresses many of the problems associated with the previously mentioned options. Many are adjustable in height so growing children are accounted for as well as the occasional adult game. There is no banging against the house with a portable basketball goal. Also it does not have to become a permanent fixture. But it, too, has its drawbacks. The first and most obvious is that it is usually the most expensive option. There are cheap portable goals but they often do not last long. Also, they can occasionally be even more in the way that other goals if they are left standing in the middle of the driveway or in some other inconvenient spot.

Installing your own basketball goal can be fun although, admittedly, not nearly as fun as teaching your daughter or son to play basketball. If you are deciding to do so carefully examine you options and go with the one that will best serve your family and home.
