Christian Education

Submitted by enelra

Christian education is the method of transferring, developing and nurturing knowledge in a teaching-learning environment based on a Christian perspective so that students achieve both mental and spiritual growth.

The development and practice of Christian education is based on the universally acknowledged role of the church, or religion, as a teacher, and that any form of knowledge must be processed and understood by the learner using God's words and teachings as a yardstick.

The phrase "Christian Education" may be interpreted with various concepts and meanings due to the wide definition and level of interpretation for the terms "Christian" and "Education." Because of this, Christian education may also mean the teaching of the Christian religious concepts (or the specific teachings of a religious denomination), or a method of teaching general education with Christianity or religion as part of the core curriculum, along with the academic subjects and disciplines. Christian education is also sometimes interchanged with the terms “Sunday school,” “bible-based school,” or “catechism education.”

In general, Christian Education will always involve the integration of a reflective Christian perspective in the process of educating a person or a group of persons, be it on Christianity or general education. The underlying purpose of Christian education is to inculcate in the hearts and minds of the learners an understanding of the Christian views and life, respect for Christian beliefs, and the practice of Christian values.

The teacher in Christian education is not necessarily a priest, community pastor or preacher. Most schools categorized as Christian schools employ ordinary teachers, only they must be trained in the method of Christian education and practices Christianity, and it helps that the teacher is also a member of the Christian religion if the Christian school is sectarian.
