History of Straighteners

Submitted by David Salt
Mon, 19 Oct 2009

Hair straighteners have revolutionised the beauty industry in the last few years, with millions of women, and indeed men, relying on them every day to keep themselves looking good. It is now a surprise if a person does not own a set of straighteners, so popular have they become amongst all sections of society. It may therefore be time to take a closer look at the humble hair straightener, in order to try and understand where the phenomenon may have appeared from, and where the hair revolution is likely to take us next.

Before hair straighteners were invented, people had to make do with simply blow drying their hair and leaving it at that. Although the hair was not as sleek as it is possible to make it now, this was not a problem, since fashion conscious people were obviously not aware of the new technology that would appear over the next few years. Hair dryers, although they are hardly likely to be seen as a single way to style hair now, were important only to some in this period. The nineteen sixties hippy trend setters had no need for even hair dryers, since they preferred the completely natural, wavy haired look. The next two decades, the seventies and eighties, were the era of big hair, and the sleek and straight look was definitely out of fashion. In this period women wanted their hair big and curly, and they fashioned these styles through blow drying, and the use of rollers.

Scientists have now found that biologically the human race as a species is becoming more beautiful. There are various reasons for this, one of which is that men as well as women are being given more and more ways to improve their appearance, and are taking full advantage of the advances in technology. The hair straightener is clearly part of this global trend.
