Dinner party gifts

Submitted by Shout SEO

There is a general sense of obligation to bring something when visiting a friend for dinner. For a free meal, it is only polite to make a giving gesture! Sometimes though, it can be a fine line between making a token gesture, to going completely over the top. Even though your host will usually insist that everything is under control, show that you appreciate their hospitality with some kind of gift.

For dinner parties which are fairly intimate, it is acceptable to bring a small or individualized gift for each person. Wine glass charms are a novel idea, or a small chocolate gift bag as an after dinner thought. If the occasion is festive, such as Christmas, organize a kris kringle or crackers for the table.

Ideas for gifts when it is just yourself and your host can include something for the kitchen or living area, or a decoration to be used in the dining setting for special occasions.

Kitchen and living areas are best accessorized with items including:
• Candles, lamps, or candelabras,
• Kitchen gadgets such as paper towel holders, trivets, ice cream scoops
• Decorative plates
• Cutlery sets
• Table cloths and placemats
• Napkin holders
• Wine holders and coolers
• Ice buckets
• Dessert-related paraphernalia (decorated bowls, cheese boards, cake stands)

Dining rooms are generally used fairly infrequently, but it is nice to provide a gift which can become a centerpiece or feature of the table. Ideas include:
• Silver cutlery sets
• Crystal champagne glasses
• Servers
• Tagines
• Trays
• Dip platters
• Napkin rings

Dinner parties invariably involve pre-drinks, nibbles or an entrée, a main, and a dessert. Providing gifts which can be used at any of these stages is suitable if the gift will not interfere with whatever is already planned. So unless you are asked, do not take over the main meal! A nice gesture may be to find out what everyone will be drinking, and buy a bottle of white, red, or sweet wine, according to what dish it will be served with.

Gourmet items which can be used in the future are also a great dinner party gift. Preserves, such as hand made jams and honeys, can be used for a variety of purposes. Olive oil and vinegar sets are attractive but also practical. Stationery for the home office, or a guest book or leather bound notepad, are great ideas if you would like to bring something for the house.

A board game is a fun gift if it is a young crowd, or just the young at heart. Hampers with a mixture of pre and post dinner foods are a good idea for a dinner party. Try and include some nuts, sweet biscuits, chocolates, after dinner mints, wine, savoury biscuits, and candied or dried fruit.

A selection of ground coffees and hot chocolates can be used at the dinner party and at future gatherings. Many boutique coffee makers retail their brew, so find out your host's favourite blend and match it with gourmet cookies or chocolates. Tea sets are also appreciated, with more tea varieties available than anyone can work their way through. Compile a small but quality selection of leaf tea or tea bags.

A gift voucher may also be a good item to bring to a dinner party. Relevant vouchers may be for a book store, a nursery, or a homewares retailer.

There is any number of gift ideas options for a dinner party, and even if it is just something small, it is a courteous gesture which you should never forget.
