The first time Doug Wallace, author of the bestselling memoir, Everything Will Be All Right, saw a library; he was awed by the presence of thousands of books stacked floor to ceiling. His young mind couldn't grasp the concept of one person reading all those books, yet he couldn't stop thinking about that possibility. Getting his hands on a book was an impossible challenge during those early years.

He was born, the third oldest of eight children, into an impoverished Tennessee family—a family that had been locked in the stranglehold of poverty for generations.

Lacking access to books can affect your life in so many ways. The first research assignment, his third grade teacher asked the class to write a report on the galaxy. "What's a galaxy?" Wallace asked. The teacher replied, "Do your research."

For two weeks he worried himself sick over the report. The two room school didn't have a library. This wasn't a subject that had been discussed in the classroom. So, he asked his mother about the galaxy—no go. Ditto for his father. His older brother and sister knew nothing about it either.
On the day the report was due, he turned in a blank page except for the following words, "I can't find anything."

Predictably, the teacher gave the grade of an "F." Then, she sent him to the principal's office. "There was an article in Time Magazine recently. If nothing else, you could have looked at that," admonished the principal.

Everyone has some idea about what poverty is, but only poverty victims know what it actually means to be poor. The variations in the definition of poverty make public discourse confusing, creating a situation in which the public school system fails to guide the policies and programs necessary to insure that children in poverty are given an equal opportunity. As a result, impoverished children often perform poorly at school.

How about naming the top five things you must do when faced with immediate home eviction? The other kids would have benefitted from researching the lives of children in poverty. No doubt Wallace and his siblings would have scored well on that research assignment. Are studies in mathematics, science and language in fact more valuable than learning about the various lifestyles of the social economic classes, and in particular, the culture of poverty? Wallace thinks the classroom would benefit by learning about the creative ways children in poverty learn how to survive.

Sir Ken Robinson takes the argument a step further. He believes that school administrators also downgrade the value of creativity. He quips that the output of our school system is predicated on the assumption that everyone should be a university professor. He argues that all children are born with the gift of creativity, but our public school systems slowly "educates it out" of them.

Wallace thinks Sir Robinson may be on to something here. Creativity is no stranger to the poor. As an entrepreneur creative skills enabled Wallace to establish, grow, and ultimately sell his law firm, Wallace & deMayo, which had become the largest law firm of its kind in the United States.

Out of four generations Wallace was the only member of his family to make it out of poverty. The fact that so few ever escape is proof that the public school system is not working when it comes to educating the poor children. For members of generational poverty, the public school system is the only hope that they will have to escape the cycle of poverty.

The third grade teacher who gave Wallace that "F" did more harm to his self- worth than anything poverty had ever been able to do. What Wallace didn't know then, was the lessons learned from poverty would later give him an advantage in business-an advantage that his classmates could not overcome through the public school system.

Wallace believes we're all gifted with creativity at birth. He advocates that public schools should facilitate the development of the creative talents of our children. He promotes the concept that schools should value advancement and achievement in creative talents on the same hierarchy as mathematics, science and language.

Being a straight "A" student in "dance" may not be important to a popular and economically privileged student. But, it would work miracles for an impoverish child, especially if the school considered dancing just as important as science.

--
Doug Wallace is an attorney, a successful entrepreneur and a published author. His book Everything Will Be All Right is scheduled for nationwide launch on October 1, 2009.
Mindscreen Film Institute / School

Mind Screen Film Institute is the applied art dedicated to the Film school for Cinematography and accessories which generally mirror influences of that time.

Creating films is about telling a story in a visual medium and suited to telling visual stories. There are certain visual effects which tell a story in a more believable manner. Bad cinematography can ruin even the best of scripts. The second eye stops believing in the film, the whole movie becomes one big visual distraction. If the camera work is terrible, the angles awkward and the cutting distracting, the audience will focus on those elements rather than get lost as an active observer of the story.

Creating movies is about creating an illusion. It's about making the viewers believe they are in the scenes with the actors as an observer. As a visual story teller it's your responsibility to ensure your audience can remain in this fantasy land for the duration of your film.

If you don't understand cinematography then you won't be able to keep your audience believing in the 3 dimensional illusion of your story. Therefore our film school focuses heavily on cinematography and the process of creating a breathtakingly believable film.

These days, you can spend four years of your life and almost spend some lakhs to obtain a prestigious film degree from a big-name university. Yet once you hit the streets looking for a job in the entertainment industry, that hard-earned diploma may not land as many interviews or bring you as much respect as you imagined.

Indeed, you may find yourself losing out to someone without a degree but who happens to have some production credits, plus good connections.

This is why internships have become an increasingly effective way to get the proverbial foot in the door. Many producers and production managers no longer look to resumes but instead turn to colleagues for their hiring recommendations.

Experience sells, too, but good references are absolutely vital, especially in tight job markets. Producers and directors who are responsible for multimillion-dollar projects often have to hire quickly, and they must trust that the people who get the jobs will show up every day and give their best efforts.

Mind Screen Film Institute welcomes prospective candidates to come and visit the campus. This is certainly the best way to get a 'feel' for the place and meet those with whom you may work and socialize. All our Open Days are primarily aimed at August 2009 Batch who are considering applying to Mind Screen Film Institute and would like to find out more about the courses available and the admissions process. The programme Open Days include an opportunity to take a tour of the College.

Please note that attendance at an Open Day is not a prerequisite for applying, and those who apply without having attended an Open Day are not at a disadvantage with regard to admissions.

Dates (To apply for the courses): Applications for August batch can be started receiving from April 10, 2009 till July 31, 2009.

However, if you need any clarifications or encounter any discrepancy in the Mind Screen Film Institute courses provided here, do write to us.

We welcome any kind of feedback that will improve the quality of the site, a site that strives to provide the best information regarding Mind Screen Film Institute courses in India.

--
Rajiv Menon

Source: http://www.articletrader.com

Creating Awesome Girls Bedroom

A girl’s bedroom is a place of peace, serenity and inspiration. For this reason, a lot of things have to be done for this to be achieved. A girl’s bedroom is one of the most thoughtful rooms you will find. This is because girls are naturally more artistic than their male counterparts. Therefore the room will never disappoint. It really does not matter what the age of the girl is and, all rooms need some extra attention. If you are a parent or a girl who is planning to decorate your bedroom, there are several things that you need to consider so that you can make the girls bedroom the haven that it should be. The first thing you consider is the kind of theme you want in your bedroom. Girls do love to be artistic and, you need to theme your room so that you can ensure that your personality is incorporated. Therefore, you need to ask the girl what she would prefer in this regard. A theme can be anything and, all you have to do is to make sure that you will be happy to see it every night.

Once you have considered this, you can then move on to the next factor. The other thing you need to consider is the decor in regard to the curtains, linen and other things. If you have any dressers that you are attached to, you can add them to become part of your decor. Girls tend to recycle things and this is usually very helpful as they turn old stuff into beautiful and attractive stuff. Girls like to include stuff like picture and magazines in the walls. For this reason you will have to look for all the pictures you like most and add them to the background. The other thing you need to consider is the storage. Girls have a lot of stuff and, it is no secret that the future will also mean lots of other stuff. If you do not want to find yourself always in a mess, you can consider the ways to ensure that you have plenty of space. Also, there are people who have space but never realize it.

Because of poor arrangement, you will not enjoy the room. If you plan to make your space a place or relaxation, you have to have a functional plan where you store your clothes, accessories and other things in an efficient manner. The other thing you can do is to make sure you change the look once in a while. This is because life is dynamic and at certain times, you need to feel a sense of progress. Different styles ensure that you always achieve this. Creating the bedroom of your dreams does not have to be an expensive affair. You can do much of the changes yourself. If you do not have a very good imagination, you can get inspiration from other bedrooms and you can view them online. There is so much to see and, you will not be disappointed about this. Go on and start the work of making your room a safe resting place that you actually like.

--
Francis K. Githinji Is An Online Dating Expert.
A challenging time

This is a year of financial turmoil in which millions of people around the world have seen their retirement nest eggs shrink, and their houses decrease in value. For many, a generalized anxiety about their future keeps them up at night.

While I can appreciate this current state, in many ways this panic is self-induced by our society. I have never understood the concept of investing for the future when the present isn't providing a joyful and fulfilling life.

An unhappy and unfulfilling life is the current state for millions of Americans, and according to my research, this proves true for most people over forty when it comes to work.

The majority of people just wait out their work years, until the time when their investments are big enough for them to finally retire, so they can do something else. The problem with this strategy, as we've seen in the economic crisis of 2008 and 2009, is that life gets in the way.

Retirement no longer makes sense

Retirement is no longer an idea that makes sense. People are living longer, in many cases well into their eighties, and the idea of simply retiring twenty, or even thirty, years earlier no longer makes sense. We have the word "retire" thanks to the French, and it originally meant to "slow down" or "crawl under." That is the last thing people want to do in mid-life.

As I write this article, I am fifty-two years old, and I feel like I am thirty-two. I have more energy now than I did in my younger years, and I have many projects planned. The thought of stopping my work feels no different to me than the thought of dying. And this is exactly what happens to most people when they stop working. They grow old and bored quickly, which leads to a focus on the past, followed by death.

The idea I would like to present is that at mid-life, we should stop working at "just a job," and starting living an authentic life.

Vocational Passion

In 2001, I trademarked the term "vocational passion." What I mean by vocational passion is to live your vocation doing work that aligns with your abilities and interests.

Vocation is work that is joyful, coherent with your integrity, and that provides meaning to your life. Vocation is work that never stops until you stop breathing.

Your best long term investment is to do work that fits you "just right." You can begin to take charge of your life and your work now, and stop waiting for Someday to come.

What can we learn from others who traveled this road of an authentic life?

When you have faith in yourself and others, magical things can happen in your life, despite the odds!

It is easy to become overwhelmed when life's challenges hit after forty. Many times life can suddenly feel like a game that is just too difficult to play.

Suddenly everything a person has come to define as success seems to crumble. This happens to many people. It can feel so overwhelming; some people decide to give up. The problem with this strategy is that there is no one who will come to the rescue. It takes a new strategy, one that may go against society's expectations of success or what you have been taught.

It is only when redefining what success after forty really means, and learning new ways of measuring success, that your authentic life filled with purpose can emerge.

It will not come all at once, but in pieces. One day you feel a little lighter on your feet, the next day new ideas emerge, and suddenly you realize your life is in your control and determined by your feelings, actions, and your desired direction.

Taking the time to reflect deeply about your needs and desires after forty is not only important for finding purpose, it is mandatory.

With a new sense of purpose you can start to lead a life that allows you to give back. You learn that you really do control more of your life than you are led to believe. Only then will your natural gifts and talents start to emerge, and your life will never be the same.

Life will be richer and deeper, and you will live it with more awareness.

Make a decision and action

Once you figure out what is most important to you, it takes a decision and action to move towards doing more of what you love in your vocational life. This can be challenging if you have fallen into a pattern of doing what you have always been good at.

After forty it is much better to follow a path of your passions and interests, and learn as you go, rather than continue down a road of doing work you are no longer interested in.

Take small steps

A new vocational path takes small steps. These steps can start from a simple new idea. This idea only comes from deep thought and the realization that what you are doing is no longer working. In fact, a deeper self-awareness brings new insight that your life doesn't fit anymore. As with those six year-old jeans still hanging in the closet, you need to make an effort to throw away the old. Only after the old is discarded do new possibilities emerge.

After forty, it is important to examine your abilities and interests, and focus where the alignment is just perfect. This can bring fulfillment, joy, and meaning back to your life.
Again, this must be a solo exercise; you must be free of external views and opinions.

Trial and error

Sometimes it takes trial and error before your life starts to work just right. Be patient with yourself while starting down the road to insight and self-discovery. With each new step, small pieces of evidence will emerge that this new life built around what you prize can actually work.

After forty, it is mandatory to be selfish about your life and work. Only then can a life of integrity and authenticity emerge.

I’ll be cheering you on as you go - Craig Nathanson

--
Craig Nathanson is the author of "Don't JUST retire and die: A new approach to your life and work after 40" and he is a coaching expert who works with people over forty.

Visit Craig’s online community at http://www.thevocationalcoach.com where you can take a class, get more ideas through Craig Nathanson’s books and CD’s, get some private coaching over the phone or in Craig’s office, or read other stories of mid-life change and renewal.

Craig lives and works in Petaluma, California.
