Is Your Life Off-Balance? http://www.articletrader.com/self-improvement/motivation/is-your-life-off-balance.html http://www.articletrader.com/self-improvement/motivation/is-your-life-off-balance.html Fri, 04 Sep 2009 13:25:18 -0500
According to a study by the Families and Work Institute, a third of U.S. employees are chronically overworked and about half have been overworked at some point in the past month. Couple that statistic with the ever increasing number of Americans who are out of work, and it becomes clear that more and more of us are unmistakably off-kilter and out of sorts.

Juggling all aspects of life has always been a balancing act, but author and speaker Dan Thurmon believes that an off balance life should not be fixed, but rather, embraced.

"Every day, we are inundated with messages about the importance of finding ‘balance' in our lives," said Thurmon, author of Off Balance On Purpose - Embrace Uncertainty and Create a Life You Love, from Greenleaf Book Group Press (www.offbalanceonpurpose.com). "How does this make us feel? Overwhelmed, out of touch, and unfulfilled. The problem isn't us—it's the message. Perfect balance is unachievable and undesirable. The perpetual quest for balance ends up limiting growth, progress, and the quality of life."

Thurmon's theory is that people need to free themselves from the "balance" dilemma and learn to thrive during uncertain times with a shift in attitude and actions: embrace reality, get aligned with your purpose, lean forward, and initiate positive changes. He offers the following tips to changing the attitude from anxiety to empowerment:

• Accept and take advantage of the contradictions in our daily lives
• Once you fully embrace uncertainty, you can learn to thrive in the midst of chaos and see opportunities that were previously invisible to you.
• You must let go to get a grip. The experience of "being overwhelmed" stems from an inability to let go of the things we cannot control.
• Integrate the five vital areas of life—work, relationships, health, spiritual growth, and personal interests—into a workable pattern, with strong, fluid connections between the areas
• Adopt a practical, concrete process for orchestrating changes and staying aligned with one's purpose
• Life is not a hypothetical future; it is an undeniable present. Own your reality and engage life as it is happening right now!

With the economy in shambles, and people scrambling to make ends meet, Thurmon believes that the reality of off balance living is amplified, and that those who can implement these strategies will be rewarded.

"Economic uncertainty has caused millions of layoffs, and that number continues to climb," he said. "Stock and housing markets remain uncertain. People realize that the systems that they believed to be ‘stable' are, in fact, unreliable and overstretched. Many people find themselves unfulfilled, off balance, and lost for a plausible ‘next step.' For those who are out of work, looking to reinvent their lives and find a new, more fulfilling and sustainable approach, learning how to live off balance could be just what the doctor ordered."

How to Be a Motivational Speaker http://www.articletrader.com/self-improvement/motivation/how-to-be-a-motivational-speaker.html http://www.articletrader.com/self-improvement/motivation/how-to-be-a-motivational-speaker.html Tue, 07 Jul 2009 00:48:06 -0500
1. Find something that you can speak about. The best place to start is with your own life. List down the goals and achievements that you have attained in your life, such as finding the love of your life, the first time you received your paycheck on your first job, or how you started your own business. In doing this, sharing your success or how you attained your goals through your hard work could really inspire people, especially if what you have attained is something special or extraordinary.

2. You must find your specialty, if you want to be a motivational speaker, you must find the area that you are an expert of. Most people hire a motivational speaker to be able to help them in a certain area.

3. Once you have found your specialty, it is now time to find your targeted audience. Your audience should be the people who can benefit from your specialty. If you're area of expertise is on relieving stress on the workplace, then your targeted audience should be career oriented people or corporate offices, since stress is part of their daily lives.

4. It is always a good idea to write your speech before you give out your speech to an audience, this way; you will have an outline or a guide on how to go about your speech.

5. Improve your speaking skills, even if you feel that you are already confident in your speaking skills, there are always room for improvements. How can you improve your speaking skills? You can join clubs, classes or an organization that specializes in developing speaking skills. This way, your skill as a motivational speaker can really improve. Another way of improving your speaking skills is to watch other professional motivational speakers in action.

6. Having your own marketing materials to promote yourself as a motivational guest speaker should be your next step. You can have a media kit, which includes the following: video recording of one of your speeches, business cards, an introduction leaflet, your resume that includes your experience. Testimonial or referral letters from other people who have heard you speak in public.

7. After identifying your targeted audience and preparing your marketing materials, it is now time to approach those targeted audience through sending them your media kit or visiting them in person.

Power of the Entrepreneur http://www.articletrader.com/self-improvement/motivation/power-of-the-entrepreneur.html http://www.articletrader.com/self-improvement/motivation/power-of-the-entrepreneur.html Tue, 30 Jun 2009 22:33:10 -0500
If business was booming and resources were in abundance, I lost all motivation. For the longest time I thought that only under desperation could I find creativity and motivation. If you took away all my money and locked me inside of a small, cockroach-infested, apartment, with nothing more than a phone, laptop, Internet access, and 11 cans of beef stew without a can opener, you would be shocked at what I can get done. I would figure out how to open the cans of food with my cell phone, and within 8 days, deposits would start appearing in my bank account. I thought this was just my primitive survival mechanism kicking in. As it turned out, I was neither lazy nor motivated by primitive survival instincts. It is actually a personality trait that few possess and even fewer understand.

This isn't about sucking it up and getting to work. I will spare you that speech, because lots of people have written about that topic already. What I am talking about is where a person gets their motivation from. Is it generated from internally or externally? That is the million dollar question. A true entrepreneur is motivated from internal validation.

A normal person is motivated by external validation. Most people without resources have nothing to draw validation from and they cannot get excited enough to accomplish starting a business. They cannot find the motivation to figure out how to build something out of nothing. Give that person a large office, nice business cards, and an important title and they tend to get to work and behave in a way that is congruent with that external validation. The biggest problem occurs when external validation is given to them, rather than being earned by them. They then boss people around without actually knowing what they are talking about, resulting in the business falling apart under misdirection. This is why an average person fails at starting a business. They either can't find the motivation to start from scratch or, if they get lucky and have some resources fall into their lap, they never learn how to build resources, which is what entrepreneurship is all about. The most common thing I see when non-entrepreneurs try to start companies is that money gets squandered to buy stuff that gives them external validation. These are the people who go bankrupt paying for huge office space that they do not need. The only thing they succeed at is building nothing out of something as they exhaust their resources without building mechanisms for profit. The funniest thing to me is that as the business fails, all of their external validation starts to disappear and with it their power at the very time they need it most. Their need for external validation guarantees their failure.

Then there exists a rare breed, the entrepreneur. This is the kind of person who truly can build something out of nothing. The entrepreneur gets his motivation from internal validation. It makes no difference to his self value if he is running things from a one-room apartment or the top floor of a skyscraper. He will be called arrogant and egotistical because he sees his value only inside of himself; he considers his circumstances and assets irrelevant. He believes that he has the power to create money out of nothing and his motivation for success is showing that belief to be true. For him, it's not what he has; it is what he can do, and once that is done, he can have anything.

Now that you understand that how a true entrepreneur is motivated, I will explain what people see as laziness, loss of interest, and lack of motivation once their businesses get going. The entrepreneur gets excited about being able to do what more than 99% of the people on this planet cannot do, create something out of nothing. True entrepreneurs lose interest when the process turns into building something out of something because they see that as a goal anyone could accomplish, so it doesn't feed their ego in the same way. They are excited by being able to do what others cannot. The true entrepreneur is a fire starter. After things get going, they hand it off to the management they hired and leave to start another business. They start that new business with nothing. They understand the power in doing this and know that the man who needs "no thing" has "no thing" holding him back. He gets his validation internally. That internal validation gets satisfaction from being able to create things out of "no thing" - that is the magic! That is the real entrepreneur at work.

Focus on being more and you will see that making silly amounts of money and dating ridiculously attractive women comes easy. The Possibility of Personal Belief http://www.articletrader.com/self-improvement/motivation/the-possibility-of-personal-belief.html http://www.articletrader.com/self-improvement/motivation/the-possibility-of-personal-belief.html Sun, 28 Jun 2009 22:14:46 -0500
You may well have heard the tale of Susan Boyle, a middle-aged woman of unremarkable appearance from a modest hamlet in Britain. In 1995, Susan auditioned as a singer on a ‘Star Search'-like British tv show (‘My Kind of People'), only to be shamelessly mocked and insulted. When Susan recently auditioned and was selected to appear - 14 years later - on ‘Britain's Got Talent', she defied expectation and literally moved the audience and judges to tears with an exhilirating rendition of "I Dreamed a Dream" from Les Miserables. People all over the world are wearing t-shirts of Susan, Larry King interviewed her, Hollywood wants to make a film with her, Oprah has invited her as a guest on her tv show, and Elaine Page, Susan's hero, wants to perform a duet with her.

J.K. Rowling, reknowned for her magical ‘Harry Potter' series of books, has become one of the world's most celebrated authors, reportedly having become a billionaire from her magical writings. Her books enjoy immense popularity around the globe, critical acclaim and commercial success, having sold over 400 million books and translated into 67 languages. The last four of J.K.'s series about Harry's struggle against an evil wizard have consecutively set records as the fastest-selling books in history. ‘Harry Potter' has spawned an industry, including movies, videogames and themed merchandise, all borne from the creative mind of one woman. Yet, J.K. Rowling's private journey was anything but simple. Her mother died from multiple sclerosis, J.K. was subsequently diagnosed with clinical depression and contemplated suicide, all the while a single parent surviving on welfare while working on her first novel.

Chris Gardner's story of trial and disappointment is well-chronicled in the film "Pursuit of Happiness". Frustrated in his quest to become a stock broker, Chris' circumstance went from bad to worse during a 10-month interview process with a San Francisco-based firm. His girlfriend ran off with their only son and all Chris' belongings. Soon thereafter, Chris found himself penniless, and jailed for ten days for unpaid parking fines, only to be released the day before his final interview. Chris showed up for this crucial meeting in dirty jeans and a t-shirt, openly admitting the truth of having lost his son, being broke and released from jail one day earlier, and without a home. To his amazement, the interviewer was sympathetic, having endured a painful divorce, and immediately put Chris in the company's training program. His son was soon returned to him, and together they survived on the streets, later finding the means to live in a $10-a-night motel. Years later, having passed his broker's exam and working for a major brokerage house, Chris struck out on his own, securing major clients and never looking back.

What compels some people to quit in the face of adversity and rejection, while others pursue their dream with a single-minded sense of purpose? Why is quitting not an option for some? What force of will fuels people to rise above bad circumstances or a string of initial failures?

Anatole France reminds us ‘to accomplish great things, we must not only act, but also dream; not only plan, but also believe'. Confucius' wisdom held "our greatest glory is not in never failing, but in rising up every time we fail."

Why most give up after a few rejections is not so much a mystery, as a magnficent tragedy. Lack of belief in oneself is the stuff of emptiness, frustration, dashed dreams, plowed-under human capacity, negative self-image and sadness, whereas persistence and hard work fueled by belief in oneself yields the miracle of joy and contribution, success and meaning. Is it possible to accomplish your true purpose, live a joyous and richly rewarding life, and enjoy a persistence borne of a balance between head and heart when you're busy beating up on yourself for a momentary ‘failure'? Can you imagine what you might accomplish if you held fast to an unshakeable belief in yourself?

Waking each morning, we are given a choice and it is ours to choose wisely. Do you choose to listen to and consume the fear and skepticism so prevalent in the marketplace of humanity, surrounding yourself with those who encourage anxiety, negativity and limitation, or do you choose to believe deeply in yourself and thoughtfully embrace - both personally and professionally - those who align with your values and life vision?
One choice results in the ultimate injustice of not bringing forth our best and our greatest gifts to be shared, the other choice yields rewards beyond our limited imagination.

Mastering Your Mind Power: Training Your Imagination http://www.articletrader.com/self-improvement/motivation/mastering-your-mind-power-training-your-imagination.html http://www.articletrader.com/self-improvement/motivation/mastering-your-mind-power-training-your-imagination.html Tue, 23 Jun 2009 13:58:35 -0500
Laying on the ground underneath the tree were several seed carrying cones with their numerous seeds attached. Each seed was about the size of a dime but a bit thicker. On that day, I saw that magnificent tree in a different light. The realization that this gargantuan of a tree grew from that small seed produced a profound sense of awe in me.

I was once again reminded that everything that my eyes beheld around me, including the library building, the cars on the streets, the street lights, the streets, the books inside the library, even the people visiting the library (including me) began as a relatively tiny seed. The inanimate items, of course, began as thought seeds in the imagination of someone.

Herein is the importance of mastering your mind power by training your imagination. Just as the giant Sequoia tree develops from the small seed or the human adult grows from a tiny microscopic egg, so will your desires grow out of the thoughts, ideas, and mental images that you consistently hold in your imagination.

I am certain that you have had or now have thoughts of what you would like to have, to do, or to be. It is now up to you to organize a regimen for consistently presenting those thoughts to your subconscious mind through your imagination. It is you and only you who have been given absolute control by your creator over what may be allowed into your imagination.

The first order of business is to organize your thoughts into your definite major goal or intention. This step is of utmost importance. To neglect this step would be like embarking on a driving trip from Hayward, California to New York City, New York without planning a route. What would be your chances of ever getting there? As critical as this step is, the vast majority of the population, approximately 95%, never, ever, do it. Unfortunately, there is a 95% chance that you are one of those people.

The next step is to set aside definite periods of every day to relax yourself and bring the images that represent what you want to have, to be, or to do into your imagination. For most people, these periods must be longer than the 5 to 10 minutes 3 times a day that many authors suggest. I think those periods should be more in the half hour to and hour range.

I am sure that your first reaction to the longer periods is that it is impossible to carve out that much time from your busy day. However, before you make that pronouncement your permanent reality, I strongly urge you to analyze how you are using your time now and determine if your activities are moving you toward your goal or intention.

This I know for sure. You can claim or reclaim control of your own mind power. You are the most miraculous of all living beings on earth. You are the owner of a mind that is so stupendous, that as you truly begin mastering your mind power and consciously using it, there is no dream that you can dream that you cannot achieve.

What Makes a Successful Team? http://www.articletrader.com/self-improvement/motivation/what-makes-a-successful-team.html http://www.articletrader.com/self-improvement/motivation/what-makes-a-successful-team.html Mon, 22 Jun 2009 23:32:04 -0500
Most of the successful attainment were made out of a team. And we're part of many teams. Our family is a team. The community groups and organizations we belong to are teams. Even at work, we are on a team. And sometimes we invest as a team. We sometimes stand as the team leader, captain or coach, a supervisor while other times we serve as the follower.

Understanding a team and how it works is very important. This will help you understand why a team is unsuccessful or successful. This will lead you to identify your role and maximize it for the achievement of your teams desired goal, to land a successful investment, to be the champion, to be the best among the rest.

Okay, so what makes a team successful? Here's a checklist for you to evaluate.

- Communication between members.
A good communication must be in line between members. This will enable leaders to communicate the vision and for each member to know where they are going and stick their focus onto it.

- Members commitment to excellence
There is only one goal to achieve and that is the highest of all levels. Everyone in the team must be committed to showing excellence in everything they do. Members that are not committed to it will become the weak link and must eliminated.

- Members capability to follow
The secret of getting things done doesn't rely solely in great leadership but how well the rest of the members follow the leadership.

- Members understanding on their role.
Knowing exactly your role in a team will help you maximize it for a greater output as the team expect you to do it with 100% perfection. Success is when every member of the team operates their strengths and their roles.

- Operation of strengths and weaknesses
Ever team member has strengths and weaknesses. When members consistently operate out of their strengths and not out of their weaknesses, it's a successful team.

- Team Building
The team that have fun together stays together. Once in a while, a team should go out and have some fun. It will bring an incomparable sense of bonding.

- Members understanding on common goals and vision.
It's very important that every member understands and know that they are working together for. A short, simple and clear goals and vision could make it stick to their minds.

- Members Appreciation.
A tap on the back with words "great work!" plus a smiling face could motivate team members to do a lot more better.

How Suggestible Are You? http://www.articletrader.com/self-improvement/motivation/how-suggestible-are-you.html http://www.articletrader.com/self-improvement/motivation/how-suggestible-are-you.html Mon, 22 Jun 2009 15:23:43 -0500
That's how it all began. Everyone who joined this group has lost weight and kept if off - EVERYONE. Now that is, I have to say, unusual. Clearly the first person, the leader, inspired a great deal of confidence within the group. I do not know them well enough to know what dynamics were at work, but it is interesting to conjecture what might have happened...

Perhaps this "weight loss leader" was someone who was particularly well respected in general, someone who everybody looked up to and tried to emulate. Perhaps this was not the case; maybe this "weight loss leader" was actually a REALLY overweight person, who had tried every diet under the sun and failed in the past, and in losing weight now made everyone think "If he can do it, I DEFINITELY can". You can see now how diverse the underlying dynamics could be, but whatever they were, they worked.

What is also demonstrated is how suggestible we all are, provided we are given the right suggestion. A stage hypnotist knows only too well how to put the human instinct for suggestibility to work. A stage hypnotist will pick the most highly suggestible subject to perform the first "trick" and then work in order from one person to another in accordance with their initial levels of suggestibility. As each person is seen responding to the hypnotist's suggestion the following person's suggestibility is raised. And so by the end, the least suggestible subject will become as suggestible as the first subject to be picked. That person's belief in the hypnotist's ability is raised, bit by bit, simply by observing the others reactions.

The bottom line is that we are all suggestible, given the correct stimulus. I wish I had a dollar for every person who over the years has booked a hypnotherapy session and upon arrival their opening announcement was "I don't know if this will work as I know I'm not suggestible". As a hypnotherapist, my job is to work out what is the right "hook" for each person. This job is quite often done before the client arrives; for example, if a heavy smoker has been for a hypnotherapy session and stopped easily, then everyone they tell expects it to work for them, just as if a "larger" person has lost a lot of weight encourages everyone else to think that they can do it too.

And so when asked the question of how suggestible you are, the answer is that you are as suggestible as you want to be. It boils down to expectation and desire. We are all inherently suggestible which is witnessed in the way in which we pick up our native tongue, and learn so many things simply by imitating and copying. We are suggestible in things such as clothing fashion, hair style, and choice of career. Every human being is extraordinarily suggestible!

Charity Work and Volunteering http://www.articletrader.com/self-improvement/motivation/charity-work-and-volunteering.html http://www.articletrader.com/self-improvement/motivation/charity-work-and-volunteering.html Mon, 22 Jun 2009 11:56:35 -0500 charity work in are hospitals, some long term care facilities, grocery stores, charity groups, and many other establishments as well. This can also allow people to gain new relationships and earn a good reputation for when they are ready to go out into the working world in the future.

Volunteers are a great help to businesses. For instance, those who work as volunteers in hospitals help patients to have a more tolerable stay while they are ill. Nursing home patients may enjoy having a volunteer come visit them from time to time just to keep them company. Volunteers in grocery stores can be helpful by carrying bags out for customers or helping them locate certain items in the store.

Volunteering your time to help charity groups can also be an enjoyable thing to do. Knowing you are helping those in need can be a rewarding experience that you can be proud of. Many elderly people who are shut-ins need volunteers to run occasional errands for them. Having trustworthy people who can go pay their bills or make trips to the store for them when needed can be a tremendous help.

Another benefit of being a volunteer is how you are perceived by the public eye. Most likely if you do well at job volunteering , you will be considered strongly should you ever want a permanent job at that particular business. When business managers see they can depend on you as a volunteer your reputation as a good worker will be set in stone. It is also a nice addition to have volunteer work listed on a resume as experience working with others in your community.

Volunteer opportunities are also a great way for college students to gain on the job training. Once you have an idea of which career you want to go into, find out if there is a business in that field that has a need for volunteers. This can help you be better prepared for the job and give you a sense of pride while doing it.

Importance of Financial Freedom Seminars http://www.articletrader.com/self-improvement/motivation/importance-of-financial-freedom-seminars.html http://www.articletrader.com/self-improvement/motivation/importance-of-financial-freedom-seminars.html Mon, 22 Jun 2009 04:17:10 -0500 There are public speakers who offer financial freedom seminars without charging a fee to the public. However they may sell their books and other things related to financial freedom. Some of these companies offer a free dinner at a local restaurant if people will come and listen to their financial freedom seminar. In this way people are likely to learn something just by listening to them share information.
Some speakers are giving financial freedom seminars that are based on Biblical principles. These seminars are totally from a Biblical perspective. They claim that they've learned these principles then. They share from the Bible information about the universal financial principles as well as using examples from their own life.
Television is another way to learn more about your financial freedom. There are often special programs on public broadcasting stations and other channels which will offer you help with your financial future.
Financial freedom seminars are great if they are put together by folks who really care about helping people. But keep in mind it's not just about getting money; it's about how to spend, save, and make sensible purchases. The combination of these factors may be outside the scope of some financial freedom seminars. Scores of them are geared exclusively toward teaching you to earn money.
Before you attend paid financial freedom seminars, always keep in mind, research the company to discover what they offer. A number of free financial freedom seminars may fall under the "you will get what have paid for" heading. The financial freedom seminar content offered can be fluff with little to be learned except how to buy products or memberships from the company holding the seminar! It may be worthwhile to go ahead and pay for one or more reasonably priced financial freedom seminars. Now, it's entirely up to you to choose!
