The group of Islands consist of six inhabited islands and around 140 smaller rocky islands and are near the most westerly part of England, Lands End.
Flowers are an important agricultural product for the farmers, the islands position means that the rarely have snow or frost, meaning the farmers can grow flowers ahead of the ones on mainland Britain.
Tourism accounts for around 85% of the islands income. The Island has managed to attract this tourism due to its unusual and unique environments, summer climate, a relaxed island culture, and good transport by sea and the ability to Fly to the Isles of Scilly from mainland Britain. Most tourists stay on the Island of St Mary’s due to it having a lot of amenities and holiday accommodation. Another tourist-orientated island is Tresco which is an inhabited island that is run as a timeshare resort. Out of the other Inhabited Islands St Martin’s and Bryher are less tourist orientated but do have hotels and accommodation. The least developed of the islands is St Agnes that has no hotel.
The level of dependency on tourism is very high on the islands, even compared to other similar groups of islands. Many Island activities are purely to increase levels of tourism, for example the transports links would not be able to be maintained if the levels of tourism weren’t so high. Therefore the sustainability of the whole community is affected by the implications of tourism.
Tourism on the Island like most forms of tourism in Britain is highly seasonal due to the weather and its high levels of outdoor activities. The islands virtually shutdown in the winter due to low levels of tourism. But apart from the summer, the island does get a burst of extra tourism in October, when birdwatchers arrive to see the first landing of migrant birds.
There are two main forms of transport to the island from mainland Britain, by air and sea and Inter Island travel is made by boat. The only island with a traditional road network is St Mary’s.
Air travel is by fixed wing aircraft or by helicopter. There is an airport on St Mary’s and a Heliport on Tresco. Helicopter travel is provided by the British international helicopters from Penzance Heliport to both St Mary’s airport and Tresco Heliport.
The Penzance to St Mary's route has been operated by helicopter since 1964 and has achieved the distinction of becoming the world's longest running scheduled helicopter service. The Tresco service was inaugurated in 1983 and therefore 2004 marks two major milestones in the history for British international helicopters.
Fixed-wing aircraft services, operated by Isles of Scilly Skybus, from various UK airports (Land's End, Newquay, Exeter, Bristol and Southampton) to St Mary's Airport.
By sea, the Isles of Scilly Steamship Company provides a passenger and cargo service from Penzance to St Mary's.
There are many beautiful sights to see on the Isles of Scilly and tourism is a major part of the island’s inhabitants lives, so I urge you to go and visit one of the islands if you get the chance.

Getting to the airport with children http://www.articletrader.com/travel/aviation/getting-to-the-airport-with-children.html http://www.articletrader.com/travel/aviation/getting-to-the-airport-with-children.html Tue, 17 Feb 2009 08:52:34 -0600
Now where are you going? If there are interesting diseases common in the destination country, you and the children may be required to get immunized. Some countries require proof before you are allowed entry. In others, it is merely a wise precaution. In any event, you should have your doctor examine them before they fly. One of the things to look for is any sign of a cold or stuffed up nose. Because of the changes in pressure during take-off and landing, there can be damage to the ears causing pain and, sometimes, slight deafness for days. Take your doctor’s telephone number with you. If there is an emergency, a quick telephone consult with local doctors can save time in deciding what treatments are safe.

Thinking about documentation, if you are traveling as a single parent, you should carry a verifiable form of consent from the other parent. There are cases of abductions and you should aim to avoid suspicion. More importantly, you need to carry a document confirming your sole power to give consent to medical treatment in the country to which you are traveling. Should any child fall ill, there must be no doubt that the single parent can authorize treatment. Travel insurance including cover for all medical costs is also vital. Children are prone to falling sick when it is most inconvenient. Make sure you can cover all costs without having to hit your credit card. So these have been the first steps to get us to the airport. You have your cheap plane tickets. Everyone is ready to go. You have done your online check-in, reserving the seats with the most leg room. Now is the time to set off, not forgetting those cheap airline tickets.

Caveats of Cheap Discount Airfare Reservations http://www.articletrader.com/travel/aviation/caveats-of-cheap-discount-airfare-reservations.html http://www.articletrader.com/travel/aviation/caveats-of-cheap-discount-airfare-reservations.html Mon, 23 Jul 2007 00:00:00 -0500
No Return, Exchange or Transfer

Once you click the checkout button for a cheap discount airfare reservation online, that’s it. You can not change your reservation date, city, airline or time of departure/arrival at any cost. These cheap discount airfare reservation tickets are non-transferable meaning that in case you are unable to make the trip, you can’t give it to a friend to use instead.

One way out of losing all your money may be to buy trip protection of some sort. Not everything will be covered, but it does cover things like cancelled flights and lost luggage. Check when making your reservation if such a feature is offered, what it covers and how much is it for.

One Way or Round Trip

At times airlines and travel websites advertiser amazingly low airfares. You might be tempted to go to Orlando for $69 but do find out if this is a one-way fare that is quoted or a return trip. Also take in to account all fees, surcharges, government taxes etc. and look at the final price carefully before you enter your credit card information.

Inconvenient

Although not always, but many a time cheap discount airfare reservations are possible because they have the most inconvenient flight itineraries. They may leave at 6 AM which means you need to get out of bed at 3 AM to make it to the airport. They may also return at odd hours or they may return at a different airport from where you departed; this leaves parking you car at the airport out of the question.

Cheap discount airfare reservations may also have inconvenient layovers which do not just increase the travel time; they may entail terminal change or be too close or too far apart. Either way you may miss a connecting flight due to shortage of tm or inclement weather and be stuck in a different city.

Remember that cheap discount airfare reservations are a good deal provided you are flexible with your time, date and airline. If you are a frequent flyer it always pays to stick with one carrier so that you can earn and redeem miles. A few hundred miles on each airline can not get you the same rewards that a couple of thousand on one carrier can. So read the fine print and check everything twice before you make a cheap discount airfare reservation. Bon Voyage!

Menorca Welcomes New 2008 UK Flights http://www.articletrader.com/travel/aviation/menorca-welcomes-new-2008-uk-flights.html http://www.articletrader.com/travel/aviation/menorca-welcomes-new-2008-uk-flights.html Tue, 12 Feb 2008 00:00:00 -0600
But like any other holiday destination, tourism plays an important part in Menorca's economy, and she wants to maintain and if possible improve on the number of visitors.

The good news for Menorca as the summer season approaches is that new routes from the important UK market have started, making Menorca not only more accessible but likely to bring the cost of a flight to Menorca down due to increased competition.

Britian's biggest low cost airline easyJet now have four UK airports serving Menorca's Mahon airport, the all important London Gatwick, Liverpool's John Lennon Airport serving the North West of England, notbaly both Liverpool and Manchester, Bristol for the South West and Wales, and Newcastle for the North East of England.

The good news for those thinking of taking a holiday in Menorca who live in London and her Home Counties is that the low cost airline's departure and arrival times for Mahon Airport from Gatwick have improved a fair bit, and instead of arriving on the island close to midnight, the summer schedule sees flights depart Gatwick at either 6am or 6.30pm, depending upon the day of the week, and leave Menorca in time to touch down back in London before lunch time, or late night, allowing flexibility on the same airline not often seen at low prices with no penalty prices to pay for a low cost Menorca flight.

Menorca is also served by two UK airlines that offer scheduled flights apart from the low cost carrier that offers cheap flights to Menorca. But there are a high number of holiday companies who offer chartered flights in the summer months, and these companies have helped reduced prices for holidaymakers visiting the island. Menorca's closest neighbour Majorca attracted most UK tourists for 2007, beating off competition from low cost destinations in Eastern Europe, and Menorca has also benefitted from an increase in visitor numbers in 2007.

Despite their geographical closeness and being part of the same group of islands, the Balearics, Menorca and Majorca attract a different type of tourist from each other, and with Ibiza the third of the islands each has its own appeal, and each her unique selling points when compared to each other.

Ibiza is known in Europe for her clubs and nightlife, with 18 to 30's and their high disposable incomes preferring the island to quieter Majorca and Menorca. A survey by the island's tourist board sprung a surpise for many in the hotels and holidays industry with a report showing of the three islands that Ibiza's visitors spent more on their holidays than those in Majorca and on holiday in Menorca.

Majorca is a favourite holiday island for both the British and Germans, and as well as having a cosmopolitan feel to it offers both nightlife for the young with luxury hotels and villa holidays for older visitors. Plans are in place to build Spain's top luxury hotel on the island.

The island of Menorca, also known as Minorca, is regarded as the quietest of the three holiday islands, and family orientated, with tourists just as likely to be taking a Menorca villa holiday as they are staying in a hotel or holiday apartment. The island is at her best in May and September when the island's roads are quiet but everyone is geared up for the season.

The new flights will see an increase in holidaymakers from the UK, but tourist authorities will want to make sure Menorca retains her character of a peaceful holiday island.

Discipline And Order On Board Of Air Mauritius Flight http://www.articletrader.com/travel/aviation/discipline-and-order-on-board-of-air-mauritius-flight.html http://www.articletrader.com/travel/aviation/discipline-and-order-on-board-of-air-mauritius-flight.html Fri, 01 Jun 2007 00:00:00 -0500
There is an issue with the number of drunken passengers on Air Mauritius flights, according to the Minister of Tourism and External Communication. They cause problems to other passengers and staff and now Government wants to put into place preventive measures. They intend to have a law that will allow them to prosecute disruptive passengers once they land.

However, the Minister said that his government would not ban drinking on their Air Mauritius flights; they do not want to change the customer’s experience. They feel that they should not penalize the majority of well-behaved passengers because of a drunken few. The proposed Civil Aviation (Hijacking and other Offences) (Amendment) Bill, under section 5A reads as follows: Any person who, on board an Aircraft flight – (a) intimidates or threatens a crew member, whether physically or verbally, or uses abusive language against him, or lessens the ability of a crew member to perform his duties; (b) obstructs or hinders a crew member in the performance of his duties; (c) willfully refuses to follow a lawful instruction given by the aircraft commander, or on behalf of the aircraft commander by a crew member, for the purpose of ensuring the safety of the aircraft or of any person or property on board, or for the purpose of maintaining good order and discipline on board, shall commit an offence.

(2) Any person who, on board an Air Mauritius in flight (a) intimidates or threatens, whether physically or verbally another person or uses abusive language against another person; (b) willfully damages or destroys property not belonging to him;(c) is under the influence of an intoxicating drink (i.e. alcohol) or of a drug to such extent as to be incapable of behaving properly, shall commit an offence. One tour Operator believes that the new legislation would be a step towards the right direction. “This is an excellent initiative. The Bill would bring Mauritius in line with other countries, which have laws that offer protection on flights. It is important that at a time when we expect a rise in the volume of tourists, we can assure flight staff a safe working environment.”

The president of the Association of Travel Agencies, Mr. Willy Cheung said that it is a good piece of legislation that will act as a deterrent. It will protect the cabin crews, and the passengers too. One steward said that this new legislation was long overdue. Flight crews have had enough with drunken passengers. They think that they are here to put up with their abuse and ill manners. Not only do they make their job tougher but also they spoil the mood of other passengers. He applauds the Government for this initiative. An airhostess also said that dealing with drunken passengers is a cabin crew’s worst nightmare. They must be very initiative to find a diplomatic ways to ask them to stop drinking. They have received training to deal with this issue, but it can get quite tiring.

Making sense of the prices http://www.articletrader.com/travel/aviation/making-sense-of-the-prices.html http://www.articletrader.com/travel/aviation/making-sense-of-the-prices.html Thu, 18 Jun 2009 04:34:25 -0500
For these purposes, it makes no difference whether you're buying in a bricks-and-mortar travel agency or online. You need to make sense of the ticket prices. Now even the so-called legacy carriers are charging separately for confirming the seat reservation, for the use of a blanket and pillow, and for in-flight food and drinks. To give you a sample of the problems you may face, let's take the issue of bags. In May last year, the news broke that American Airlines was charging for checking in a single bag. Within weeks, all the major airlines followed suit. The US Transportation Department was strong in its criticism of the airlines. Although no enforcement action was taken for failing to provide a timely notice of the change in the cost of travel, the Department made it clear that any future breach of regulations would result in action. The airlines are now more compliant with the regulations requiring transparency of prices. But this does not mean the prices are easy to find. You have to search the airlines websites for the small print. Travel agencies are equally lost. The American Society of Travel Agents has also protested the failure of the airlines to give accurate details of their charges. Sadly, that means you cannot also rely on what real world or online agents tell you. All you can do is hope for the best.

We need to keep this real. If you're buying cheap air tickets from a budget airline, expect to pay separately for everything other than sitting in the plane. Carry cash or credit cards with you when you leave home. Even when you're buying from a "reputable" airline, there will be some charges. Finding out what they are before you leave home can be challenging. That is part of the price you pay when you buy cheap air tickets.

Camping is the family holiday solution http://www.articletrader.com/travel/aviation/camping-is-the-family-holiday-solution.html http://www.articletrader.com/travel/aviation/camping-is-the-family-holiday-solution.html Tue, 17 Mar 2009 07:01:03 -0500
Many campsites are equipped with large tents and mobile trailers that you can stay in, and they have beds for quite a few individuals. That means that even larger families will all be able to camp out together in their tent or trailer and have a wonderful time. Many of the trailers have toilet and shower facilities, and for those in tents there are public facilities at the campgrounds that are kept very clean and are available for any camper to use. Cooking facilities are provided, too, and there are also usually restaurants where people can go if they don't want to cook. Who wants to cook on their holiday, anyway? Children who come camping with their parents won't be bored because there are so many things that they can find to do.

There are swimming pools and beaches and lakes, and many camp sites have indoor recreation facilities as well, so people have something to do when the weather is not so nice.

The ability to bond with one another, though, may be the most important thing when it comes to why families should go camping with one another. Family holidays aren't as popular as they used to be, and it's time that people went back to spending time with those that they love, instead of doing things separately or only working all of the time. Any holiday can be good for families to enjoy, but when it comes to the best choice, camping and all that it has to offer wins hands down. It brings a closeness and fun that staying in a hotel just doesn't have and it's a unique experience every time because of the range of camp site destinations available, the changing weather, and the other campers who you can meet and develop friendships with. No matter what age a child is, he or she will remember a camping holiday for a long time and take those memories along well into adulthood.

Air Charter Safety: The New Wyvern PASS http://www.articletrader.com/travel/aviation/air-charter-safety-the-new-wyvern-pass.html http://www.articletrader.com/travel/aviation/air-charter-safety-the-new-wyvern-pass.html Mon, 09 Jun 2008 00:00:00 -0500
What is PASS?

PASS stands for Pilot & Aircraft Safety Survey, a new program developed by Wyvern, the air charter industry's leading technology and information service provider, to perform comprehensive trip safety due diligence on each private flight assigned by a participating air charter service or broker.

The Pilot & Aircraft Safety Survey replaces old systems with advanced data crawlers that aggregate almost all information on important aspects of flight safety automatically, including operator, aircraft and crew. The pilot check, for example, verifies pilots' medical status, training records, flight hours and other criteria to assure they meet all FAA requirements. The engine then summarizes the findings into an easy-to-read report for the air charter vendor.

After - and only after - an assigned craft and crew has been verified by PASS will the participating air charter service or broker confirm the flight.

Stepping Up for Safety

PASS is a volunteer program. So you can be assured that any private jet charter you see using this service is going the extra mile to assure customer safety. And, the best part is, this check is done on top of already-existing standards of safety. According to Wyvern, OneSky Jets is the first launch partner to systematically use the new PASS program. Says Jim Betlyon, CEO of Wyvern, "We've had a strong relationship with OneSky Jets almost since its inception; I know they've always been dedicated in providing their customers with world-class service." And Greg Johnson, OneSky's president and CEO said, "I'm happy to see that the participation of OneSky in the development of PASS has resulted in a comprehensive, yet easy-to-use trip due diligence system."

How to fly smart . http://www.articletrader.com/travel/aviation/how-to-fly-smart.html http://www.articletrader.com/travel/aviation/how-to-fly-smart.html Tue, 01 Apr 2008 00:00:00 -0500 When you fly on the commercial airlines of the United States, you are flying on the safest, most efficient form of transportation. When the rare accident does occur, more and more people survive due to advances in aircraft manufacturing and design, air traffic control technology, emergency planning, and cabin safety.
Aviation manufacturers, air carriers, and the Federal Aviation Administration are proud of their contributions to aviation's impressive safety record. You, the air traveler, play a very important role in aviation safety.
You can take responsibility for your own safety.

* Listen To The Safety Briefing * Keep Your Seat Belt Fastened * Obey Carry-On Baggage Restrictions * Wear Sensible Clothing
Fly Smart. Be responsible for your safety and make your safe trip even safer.

LISTEN TO THE SAFETY BRIEFING
Fly Smart travelers always listen to the safety briefing because they know that every aircraft is different. The following are some tips to ensure that you are familiar with the aircraft you are on:
* Take the passenger safety card out of the seat pocket and follow along while you listen to the safety briefing. Always take a moment to review the card before subsequent takeoffs and landings. * One of the best things you can do to be prepared is to mentally plan the actions you would need to take in an emergency. As part of this plan, count seat rows between you and at least two exits. * If you have any questions about the safety procedures, ask the flight attendant. Flight attendants are professionals; they know about the safety procedures of the aircraft.

FASTEN YOUR SEAT BELT
Of all the safety features aboard the aircraft, one of the most important is right at your fingertips, "Your Seat Belt."
In a recent study, nearly 300 turbulence-related serious injuries to passengers were reported over a 10-year period. None of the injured had their seat belts fastened. To prevent turbulence-related injuries, Fly Smart travelers should always:
* Keep their seat belt fastened at all times. * Make sure their seat belt is secured snugly and low across the hips.

OBEY CARRY-ON BAGGAGE RESTRICTIONS
Fly Smart travelers should be aware of what they bring on board.
* Most airlines restrict carry-on baggage to two pieces per passenger. * Carry-on bags must be small enough to fit under the seat in front of you or in the overhead bins. It's a good idea to put the heavier items under the seat. * Carry-on items could become flying projectiles during turbulence. Heavy items and baggage with sharp corners can be hazardous.
* Some hazardous materials are restricted. They can be dangerous if carried (or checked) on an aircraft. Following is a partial list of common articles from the home, workplace, or garage which, because of their physical or chemical properties, can pose a danger when transported. * Mace, tear gas, and other irritants * Aerosols containing flammable material (hair spray, deodorant, repellents) * Loaded firearms * Loose ammunition * Gasoline and other flammable materials * Propane, butane cylinders or refills, and lighter refills * Wet-type batteries, e.g., as used in cars * Fireworks and flares * Safety or -strike-anywhere+ matches (in checked baggage) * Paint and paint-related materials (thinners and cleaners) * Corrosive (acids), poisonous, infectious, and radioactive materials
The above list is not all inclusive. There are certain exceptions for personal care, medical needs, and equipment to support physically challenged passengers. There are also provisions for sporting equipment. When in doubt, check with your airline. * In the unlikely event of an emergency evacuation, leave everything behind.

WEAR SENSIBLE CLOTHING
For ease of movement and protection in the unlikely event of an evacuation, Fly Smart travelers should follow these guidelines:
* Wear clothes made of natural fabrics such as cotton, wool, denim and leather. They offer the best protection. Synthetics may melt when they are heated.
* Wear clothing that allows freedom of movement. Avoid restrictive clothing.
* Wear low heeled shoes or boots. (Shoes with laces or straps are recommended. Avoid sandals.)
* Arms and legs should be as fully covered as possible. (Long sleeves/pants are recommended.)
