Major engine tune ups can be pretty expensive when done by the dealer. It will be more practical to get to know a mechanic who owns a garage to ensure you won't get ripped off. Or you can perform a do it yourself tune up and maintenance of your car's engine. Here are some basic tips.

Ignition and electrical systems

Inspect your car battery levels four times a year at the very least, at each season change. Top off low levels with distilled water. Remove corrosion from cable clamps and terminals by using a wire brush and a little baking soda. This practice will extend battery life.

Spark plugs should be replaced every 35,000 miles, or if they're platinum, replacements are required every 65,000 miles. Check the spark plug for cracks and corrosion and change them if damaged. Get high quality cables for added durability and reliable performance.

Get a new distributor cap with each major tune up, if the cap is not attached permanently to the spark plug cables. Also replace the rotor of your distributor, if it has one, as some new model cars don't have either a distributor cap or a rotor.

If your car is a 1978 model or older, replace the contact points and condenser. Newer car models have electronic ignitions and don't require condensers or contact points. Contact points should be aligned or replaced two times a year.

Oil and fuel systems

Unless your car has hydraulic valves, adjustment of valve covers is a necessity. While you're at it, also replace the valve cover gasket. If done properly, this will prevent oil from leaking out on top of the car engine.

Inspect the timing belt and readjust or replace it if needed. Electronic ignition-equipped cars don't often come with timing belts, while some do, so you have to be certain.

Inspect the fan belt and other belts. If they are cracked, frazzled or worn out, consider replacing them at once.

If your car has a fuel injector, you don't need to clean it regularly. Clean it only if it gets clogged and use only clean fuel bought at a gas station. The fuel filter needs to be changed every 35,000 miles.

The air filter has to be replaced every 15,000 miles, or if it is already covered with dirt. Keeping your air filter clean ensures a more efficient fuel burn, thus minimizing gas consumption.

Brakes and clutch

If your car has a manual transmission, the clutch will require certain adjustments. Newer model cars are now equipped with adjustable clutch. Consult you manufacturer's manual to be certain.

Oil, brake and transmission fluids should have their levels checked every week, or before and after long drives. Have an oil change and oil filter replacement every 3,000 miles as having clean engine oil prolongs the engine's life.

Ah, the tease of spring. Last weekend, the weather was supposed to be in the high 60s for two days, but Northeastern Pennsylvania got a taste of the mid 70s. I rode about 250 miles between those days without any problems. Well there was one. During a rip on my favorite mountain road, a swarm of bugs tattooed my vision; it appeared as if I was about to ride into billions of black rain drops. I was cruising along about 70 mph, and instead of relaxing on the throttle, I screwed it on a bit more. After storming through the torrential buggy downpour, I had to stop a few miles up the road to clean my visor. Not to be upset, I realized it was my bike's first fling with the bugs of spring, and how convenient it was, considering I just gave my cherished CBR a bath.

But now, as I sit here writing my final bike preparation piece, it's 43 degrees, rain pouring down in biblical proportions. Everyone has a tale, and nothing beats the stories bikers have, so let's make sure our bikes are in top shape so more can be told.
OK, since we're on stories, let's assume one. Imagine the sun just began flirting with the Western horizon, and you're cruising home from a long distance trip. The weather couldn't be more perfect, and the colors in the sky are slowly fading until it's nighttime. The only thing lighting up the road before you is that bouncing headlight, which you expect to continue lighting the way, but it suddenly stops. You pull over, noticing with a match that your wires are all frayed and cracked, and you began ridiculing yourself for not checking for a frayed wire.

It's very possible, so before that scenario can become fiction, inspect your lights and signals. Make sure your headlight, brake light and turn signals are working, and are free of cracks and condensation. Make sure the hi/low beams work, and both the front brake lever and foot lever light up the taillight. Check the wiring for fraying, cracks and pinches. Also check the battery wires, and make sure the terminals are clean and tight, and also the battery is held down securely.

Next is your throttle. Check that your throttle moves freely and snaps closed, and does not rev with the handlebars turned. Check the throttle cable for frays and kinks and also lubricate it. And never forget your chain. Adjust it to your manufacture's specifications, clean it, lubricate it, and if it needs replacement, don't mess around: replace it. We've probably all heard the horror stories of a snapped chain and the damage it causes. Sometimes it's a just something mechanical, but it could cause some major road rash, and even death if left unchanged. So inspect it thoroughly.

The final preparation step is something most bikers take pride in, a shiny steed. I know many people who clean their bikes more than they actually ride them, but if it makes them happy, let them be. I attempt to clean my bike as much as possible, but sometimes when the grime builds I bypass the shine just to get in an extra hour of riding. But it's absolutely necessary to do the best cleaning job when it's coming out of storage; not only for the appeal of a clean machine, but also to further inspect the bike for any safety hazards that will prevent a season of carefree riding.

Some basic tips: remember to only use CLEAN soft cloths and sponges, otherwise you'll scratch your bike. Remove all your jewelry and other loose items that could scuff your bike as you wash it, such a belt or a watch. Always start from the top down, and don't forget to treat your chain after washing the bike. And never, ever use a compressor to dry your bike! It blows around remaining dirt particles, ruining your paint. Some people use a leave blower, but I prefer the hand-drying method over all. And while you're at it, clean your riding gear. Last season's sweaty helmet is this season's nightmare. If the insert is removable, take time to clean it properly. And do the same with jackets, gloves, etc.

How much do you spend at the car wash each year? Here in the Northeast where road salt eats car finishes for breakfast, it’s not unusual to spend $50 or more a month protecting your car from damage. Why throw money down the drain at the local car wash when you can do it yourself at home – and get the satisfaction of a job well done.

The Right Tools make all the difference. A pressure washer is one of those pieces of equipment that will pay for itself in just a few months. Not only can you use it to power your car clean, you’ll find that it does a great job of cleaning your siding, brightening wood decks and just about any other power cleaning job there is.

Here’s how to clean and polish your car better than a car wash, using a pressure washer and some specialty car care polish products.

• Start by rinsing your car thoroughly using a fine water spray. The first rinse will wash away dust and dirt that’s on the surface of the car.
• Get up under the undercarriage by using an angled extension wand. Road salt is a killer on the undercarriage and wheel wells.
• Use the right detergent - (Pressure Washer Vehicle and Boat Wash) one that has been approved for use in your pressure washer. Dishwashing liquid or laundry detergent isn’t made for your car. The harsh solvents will ruin the finish – and won’t even get at most of the road dirt.
• Apply the detergent starting from the bottom, using smooth strokes. Now go get yourself a cold drink while you give the washing solution time to work. Ten minutes or so is just right.
• Use a rotating brush instead of rags or sponges. Less elbow grease needed – and even better, less chance of damage to your car. The soft bristles of the brush are made not to scratch your finish.
• Rinse using high pressure. Here’s where technique pays off. Remember that water at high pressure CAN damage your car, and be sure to stand a few feet away and angle the spray to glance over the surface rather than pounding into it.
• Carefully dry your car, using soft, absorbent terry cloth. You can buy car wash cloths from a store that sells auto detailing supplies or car cleaning supplies. Chamois or terry is the best, say most experts. There’s no lint and no chance of scratching the car’s finish instead of cleaning it.
• About every six months, protect that new car shine with a new coat of wax. A coat of good quality car wax will help protect the car’s finish from dirt and road grime. In between waxing, you can renew that just-waxed shine with a car care polish product that treats your car’s surface with a repellant coat of silicone (Quick Shine Car Polish)
• Don’t forget the interior. Vacuum the carpets, and clean dash and upholstery with a product meant to freshen and remove stains from vinyl and leather (Vinyl and Leather Cleaner and Polish/Protectant)
