Legend has it that the triangular shape of the Fir Tree was used to describe the Holy Trinity of God the Father, Son and Holy Spirit to people of the 7th century in Germany, who referred to the tree as 'God's Tree'. By the 12th century it was being hung, upside-down, from ceilings at Christmastime in Central Europe, as a symbol of Christianity. But it was Queen Victoria, who made the Christmas tree so popular in Britain, when soon after marring Prince Albert. Some of the Christian associations have been lost with the Christmas tree except that an angel or star is often placed at the top of the tree, representing the host of angels or the Star of Bethlehem from the Nativity story.

Of course nowadays there is a lot of controversy about Christmas trees and how environmentally friendly they are. But we have a wooden Christmas tree idea that can be used year after year and it can be made from scraps of wood and of course it biodegradable.

To make a wooden Christmas Tree you will need...

Some wood, MDF is easy to work with, paint, a string of Fairy lights, wood glue, sand paper and tools.

First draw a Christmas tree shape onto the wood. Make it as big and as tall as you like. Don't worry if you tree doesn't look symmetrical. Even God's trees aren't perfect. Remember to draw a star at the top of your Christmas tree.

You also need to draw out a stand for the tree. The stand is a square, the sides of the stand should be the about double the width of the trunk of your Christmas tree.

From the stand is a triangle, which extends up the back of the tree to support it. The base of the Triangle should be just a couple of centimetres shorter than the stand on which it will sit. The height of the triangle should be just under half as tall as the Christmas tree itself and it should be at an 85-degree angle from the base so that the finished tree leans backwards slightly.

Carefully cut out all the pieces of wood (you may need an adult to help you) and sand the edges to get rid of any rough sides.

Drill holes randomly into the Christmas tree shape. You will need to push the fairy lights through the holes later, and they need to be a snug fit. Find a drill bit that is a similar size to the fairy lights. Drill as many holes as you have lights, and drill a hole in the star at the top of the tree.

Using wood glue, stick all of the sections of wood together, and leave overnight to dry.

Give you Christmas tree a coat of paint. You tree may need more than one coat of paint. Leave to dry.

Push the Fairy lights through the holes from the back to the front. Start at the top and work your way down the tree pushing the lights through. If the holes are not a snug fit, use a dab of glue to hold each light in place.

Now plug your Christmas tree in and enjoy it for many years to come.

--

HO!!
The Value Of Gold Certificate Currency

Smart collectors know the value of gold certificates. These certificates, issued by the U.S. Treasury from the Civil War until 1933, remain in demand by people who purchase them as both a collectible and for financial security.
nWhy would anyone want gold certificates? It is simply a way of holding on to your gold, without having physical access to it. This can be for security or storage reasons. A certificate shows that you are the owner, but you don't have to physically have it in your possession. Also, deciding on the paper version means you won't spend money for insurance costs you would incur with physical gold.
nWith either method, you are investing in your financial security. Whether you decide to keep your collection and let the value accrue for years to come or sell it, you are likely to make a good return on your investment.
nSo, how do you sell your gold if you don't have the actual product? When you hold a certificate and someone wants to buy, you complete the transaction by simply phoning the custodian. It's an easy way to invest, buy or sell without the problems of security that you sometimes have when you must actually store gold.
nThe value of gold certificates is the same as the value of the actual gold. They are simply a piece of paper showing ownership. This makes things easy for investors and collectors. Many investors prefer gold certificates, because of the simplicity of liquidation.
nWhile having gold certificates is a good idea in many cases, many investors prefer to have the physical product because it is the real thing, while a certificate is a piece of paper. Most serious investors collect both gold certificates and actual gold, because it could prove to be a good hedge against inflation and flat currency devaluation.
nThere are divided thoughts on whether you should invest in gold certificates or actual gold. It really is a personal choice, but investing in both is a good idea. If you are thinking about going the easy route so that you don't have to worry about security, insurance and storage problems, you should learn more about the value of gold certificates.

--
You can always find great deals and selection on the beautiful Gold Certificate Currency at: ==>
http://BullionBargains.com

Source: http://www.articletrader.com

The increasing popularity of action figures brings some great new products. Action figures have been very popular since the 1950's. G.I. Joe was first introduced in the 1950's. Since then, it's popularity has grown in huge numbers. A long while after G.I. Joe was introduced, a plethora of action figures were created from the hit film Star Wars. Star Wars action figures were extremely popular and were the foundation of the 3 3/4" action figure for play.

The most common size is 7 inches, but other sizes available are 3", 3 3/4", 12", and 18". Plastic or vinyl is what most action figures are made from. Each figure (most, usually) comes loaded with accessories. Accessories may include guns, knives, weapons, interchangeable parts, etc. Clamshell, boxed, or carded are all methods of packaging that action figures come packaged in.

Lots of manufacturers to choose from. Here are a few: Jakks Pacific, NECA, McFarlane Toys, and Mezco Toyz. NECA (National Entertainment Collectibles Association) licenses hundreds of movies, video games, music entertainment, and much more. McFarlane, like NECA, also licenses tons of films, video games, etc. McFarlane Toys also specializes in sports figures from all professional sports including: NFL, NBA, MLB, and NHL. Jakks Pacific is a manufacturer that specializes in WWE action figures. There are many themes that behold the action figure universe. Themes such as The Dark Knight, Scarface, Terminator, Alien, Predator, and Planet of the Apes. Musician action figures are also fun to grab. Elvis, Bon Jovi, Joey Ramone, Kurt Cobain, AC/DC, Jimmy Page, John Lennon, and Kiss all have action figures in which represent these great artists.

There are people who purchase action figures with intention of displaying them and there are those who collect them. Depending on how serious of a collector you are, collecting action figures can be easy and fun or your collecting needs can be very tedious work. Determining the value of your collection, according to the experts, is based on several criteria. Condition of packaging and how rare a figure is are just a few.

If you are looking to ride the action figure wave all the way to the top, toy conventions are a great way to check out the latest figures or to network and meet people. The American International Toy Fair, Comic-Con, and Wizard World are just some of the huge toy conventions that are held once a year across the country. These conventions are a great place to meet new people that share your same interest.

Now that we know action figures are fun items to collect, shouldn't you be thinking about which action figure you're going to purchase next?

--
Steve Ripsky runs the popular online store that sells action
figures, bobbleheads,
and toys.
Greeting cards have been a way of communicating with family and friends since early civilization. Both the ancient Chinese and the early Egyptians sent messages through greeting cards. From the 15th century until the late 1800’s, Europeans crafted handmade greeting cards from paper to deliver to loved ones. The cards made in this era were usually rather costly and ornate.

Card Making was much less common after technological advancements in printing allowed greeting cards to be manufactured in mass quantities for an affordable price. By the close of the 19th century, the greeting card industry had taken the place of most handmade cards. In 1980, scrapbooking, along with other paper crafts including cardmaking, begin to increase in popularity again.

Today, thousands of people enjoy the hobby of cardmaking. Handmade greeting cards are made using a variety of different methods and range in difficulty. Many of the same techniques used in scrapbooking can be applied to cardmaking. Stamping, foiling, and embossing are all popular techniques used in making greeting cards.

Rubber stamps are available in hundreds of different styles and designs. Most modern stamps are self-inking and can be used over and over again. Rubber stamps create beautiful images and calligraphic heartfelt wishes with no effort, producing original handmade cards.

The technique of embossing is a little more involved than stamping and generates gorgeous detailed images. With heat and a special embossing powder, a stamped image can be transformed into a vibrant, three-dimensional raised image. The picture can then be painted with gel pens for a colorful handmade card.

Foiling is an elegant technique using foil leaves to transfer classy foil images and designs to paper. Crafting foil is available in many colors and designs. Foiled cards can also be embossed for a raised, professional appearance.

Like the early days of cardmaking, today’s crafters use quality paper cardstock. Cardstock is available in various styles and colors and can be purchased in ready made card layouts. Pearlescent cards and envelopes are one of the most popular styles for cardmaking because the satin, shimmering effect of the paper gives handmade cards a rich look and feel.

--
Richard Greenwood is an expert on the craft of card makingand has many ideas forcard making

Source: http://www.articletrader.com

Dollhouse Flooring Options

It is the small things that once changed make the biggest difference, and in this case flooring is a great small change for a big difference. Undoubtedly Flooring is the foundation of your dollhouse, and as such is the foundation for all of your design choices. Just as with new flooring in any house, new flooring in a dollhouse will increase the value and appeal. You have many choices in this decision and every type of flooring will not work for each room - The standard 5 are Carpet, Linoleum, Tile, Stone, and Hard Wood. Carpet for dollhouses is very compact and comes in sheets similar to dollhouse wallpaper. Linoleum and tile are basically the same for your kit in application, they are simply different designs. The hardest type of flooring to add is a stone or hard wood option, but in the end these are the best from a designing standpoint.

Accessories: The Little Touches

This hobby is about the little details. These small details can be anything from small toothbrushes in the bathroom, to magazines for the bedroom bookcase. Using them for your interior design can really spruce up your house. In addition to design, it adds a realistic feel that says people actually live here. And don't hold back, there are so many miniatures out there that there is no reason you cannot get exactly what you want.

Dollhouse Exterior Design

When you have completed your dollhouse you will want people to admire the outside of your dollhouse just as much as they do the inside. You will want to focus on the most eye attracting points first: The paint and the shingles. When you are setting up your dollhouse apply a good three coats of good craft paint to your dollhouse. When you are applying the shingles first die them and then assemble them with ruler drawn lines to avoid mistakes. In addition to the paint and shingles a couple of accessories like a barbeque or bird house will add to the attractiveness. You can even have some small flower pots to place in the window seals. Lighting is another addition that will really help the look of the outside features. Put some porch lights on, and if you have lit the inside it will make the glow through the windows appealing on the outside as well.

Designing with Linens

If you like detail, craft, and design then dollhouse design is a great opportunity to grow your talents. For instance the amount of detail that is available to you is mesmerizing. One example is fabrics within a dollhouse. The bedroom is an excellent demonstration of detail and the breadth of items that you can create. Everything from curtains and pillows, to mattresses and blankets can be created and made to fit. Moving on to the dinning room there is the dinning table cloth and if you are really fancy you can have coordinating napkins. In the bathroom you have towels, floor mats, shower curtains, etc. Now I hope that you can see the unending possibilities that await your linens, cloths, and fabric designs.

--
Shopping for dollhouse stuff Dollhouse City.com has one of the largest selections of ponderosa dollhouse. There are many styles and selections of dollhouse kits to chose from.
Fine Furniture Finishing Newsletter, Issue 6

Before beginning with this Issue's topics, I'd like to add a few words about washing your hands that I forgot in the last newsletter (Issue Five).

Another very useful product for removing dried or near-dried oil and alkyd paints and varnishes from your hands, and especially more delicate areas like your face or forearms is baby oil (light mineral oil). The oil seems to lift or displace the paint without exposing yourself to harsh paint thinner. As an added bonus,it's probably nice for skin moisturizing.

**************************************************************************

And a reader question, also related to Issue Five:"Speaking of staying clean, how do you get small amounts of paint from larger cans without making a real mess?"

This is a very good question with no easy answer (at least that I've discovered)! For relatively small amounts, I usually dip a stir-stick into the quart or gallon can, lift it out and quickly move it over the container that I want it to go in to.

This works pretty well when either the original container is pretty full, or I only need an ounce or two of material. If you're really touchy about keeping your cans perfectly clean of drips, you can even put a scrap of foil across the rim to keep the lip free of paint, which is not a bad idea if it is a can you expect to repeatedly dip into (like a can of white or black, for example).

For larger amounts to be transferred, I dip a four ounce jar (that I have lots of laying around) trying to avoid dipping so far as to get paint on my fingers. It seems like a small plastic ladle would also work, and old dried paint would probably chip or peel off easily when it got too gunky.

When it's more than a dipper's worth, I snap on one of the plastic spouts you can pick up at the paint store. Not all of them seem to fit all cans, however. And finally, if it's a product that I need to dole out in small amounts on a regular basis, like glazing formula, I use the plastic attachments from the paint store that have the screw top lid and leave the whole thing in place until the can is empty or I'm thinking that I won't be needing that product again for awhile. Readers with other techniques are invited, even encouraged to send them in...

**************************************************************************

You're about to discover one of the most useful secrets of professional furniture finishers and refinishers. Something that's so darned useful and easy that they hate to admit to it.

What am I talking about here? Magic markers! For all the little dings, dents, and scratches that are inevitable with any piece of furniturethat gets used, magic markers earn their name.

You know what I mean; those places on the legs that got whacked by the vacuum cleaner or gnawed by the puppy. Or on the top where somebody tossed their keys. Especially when they show through with a light, raw wood color, things can start to get a little shabby looking.

Worse looking yet, how about when there is a single defect in an otherwise perfect finish? Markers to the rescue! Actually, I think Magic Markers is a tradename, but it's used as a description for the whole lot of them, like Band-Aid is for, -well, band-aids.

Anyhow, you probably already have a black one laying around, and even the grocery store usually has them in brown, which is the other most useful color. But if you find yourself in an artist or craft supply store, you can get them individually or in sets of a wide range of colors. It's mostly the browns, the wood tones that are useful. A collection of them in light golden-brown, a reddish-brown, a medium brown and a dark brown (along with black) will allow you to finagle in a close-enough-to-disappear repair on most natural wood finishes.

I also keep a set of basic colors around. When added with the colors above, painted finishes can also have their problems disguised. For repairs that are lighter colored than your markers, wipe the scratch with your finger immediately after you've applied the darker marker. You can then re-apply a second "coat" if it's too light. For repair colors that don't conveniently match any of the markers you have on hand, try applying the marker that comes closest, wiping some of it off with your finger, and then dabbing in a second color that tints it in the right direction. It takes longer to describe doing it than to figure it out in real life. Besides, it usually only has to be close to disappear; that's why the black marker is handier than you might otherwise guess.

Some marker brands come with a fine tip at one end and a broader shape at the other, -these are especially handy. The only drawback to the ease and beauty of this approach may be that you won't know where to quit. Kind of like pulling out the Dustbuster for a quick little pick up, -where do you stop?

I once paid a housecall to a client who had asked me if I could stop by and touch up a couple of dings in the bases of some columns that I had marbled a few years earlier. When she saw howquickly and easily they were fixed, she asked me if I might make a trip into the dining room for the table legs, and, -oh, what about the music room...?

This home could properly be called a mansion, and it was filled with furniture! I handed her my little clutch of markers and mumbled something about being expected elsewhere...

**********************************************************************

Brown shoe polish is also useful for repairing problems on clear wood finishes. It can actually fill in scratches that aren't too deep or wide. Separately, brown and/or black shoe polish (this is the colored wax in tins that we're talking about here) can be used on wood instead of clear wax when you are looking for a slight "antique" effect. This is most useful if your piece has small details or carvings or hardware to catch the wax and hold some of it as you buff off the excess.

*********************************************************************

Hey, the last of the best time of the year for garage and yard sales is fast upon us, you may want to stock up on some small pieces for the holidays. Although you can find good used stuff year 'round, the pickin's is slimmer.

Even though it's ridiculously early to be thinking about the holidays, I think small sized projects make great gifts, and I thought that I would devote the next newsletter or two to some quick and easy ideas. You might want to review Issue Four for some hints: Newsletter Issue 4: http://www.finefurniturefinishing.com/newsletter4.html

****************

Please forward this newsletter to interested friends.

Article URL: http://www.finefurniturefinishing.com/newsletter6.html

Best wishes,

David Sorg

--

Hi, my name is David Sorg.
Adding Little Touches to your Kit

Little details will have a really big effect in this hobby, and there are thousands of doll house accessories that you can have. These small details can be anything from small toothbrushes in the bathroom, to magazines for the bedroom bookcase. Not only will these little trinkets add a flare to your doll's house, but it will make your friend's dolls jealous. In addition to design, it adds a realistic feel that says people actually live here. In reality sky is the limit in dollhouse accessories; you can even start making your own

Planning and Preparation with your Miniatures

Plan your dollhouse design, and expect to follow that plan. A plan ensures that you are getting exactly what you want, and helps you avoid wasting time. A basic floor plan and a budget should be the minimum of your list; these at least will get you started. A floor plan can be as simple as a sketch that was drawn by hand or a print of a room that you would like to copy. There are many room designs both online and off. Simply take note of a great room that you saw at a friend’s house and make notes on what you liked and what you didn’t. Take these notes and modify your plan. Now budget those items that you are interested in and try hard not to go over it. It does not matter how great a miniature is, if it makes you overspend you probably will regret it when you need that money for other items. And if you can't buy the furniture piece yet, save up until you can.

Lights and Miniatures: The Awe Factor

If you have completed a kit, furnished it, and are looking for another adventure then try lighting. This is the point when you have moved from setting up a miniature house for your kids to expanding this hobby into something more. Lighting your kit can be a fun yet challenging time. In all reality, would we enjoy it if it wasn’t a challenge? First of all the basics are simply hooking up lighting from a plug to a light. In addition to that you are given instructions and help in setting it up. Sure you are going to make mistakes, but you will learn and it will get easier for you. We recommend getting a small electrical kit to start, they are simple to set up and get started with. Remember it is only hard or challenging if you make it out to be.

Miniatures and Contrast: Beauty with an Edge

The idea of contrast is to great stark differences between colors, furniture, textures in order to draw attention to the action. In this fashion you can generate movement of the eye from one area to another, or concentrate the focus of a room on one particular aspect. For the best color contrast look at a color wheel and choose colors that are opposite one another. And remember, one can put too much contrast in a room very easily. In order to prevent yourself from creating a mess, focus on setting up one contrasting element in the room and no more.

--
Our victorian cottage jr dollhouse is just one of the many selections that we have at Dollhouse City.com We are Dollhouse Experts who want to share the joy and love of this great hobby.
My home growing up was with filled with Hardanger embroidery. When I was older, I realized what a treasure these linens were and I now keep them carefully stored and display them for special occasions only. My grandmother was from Norway and despite emigrating to a new country and helping run a fishing camp, she still found time to carry on this lovely tradition.

You can see some examples of the linens by clicking the link at the bottom of this article.

Hardangersøm (or Hardangersaum), is Norwegian for 'embroidery from Hardanger', and refers to the style of needlework that many of us know as Hardanger embroidery It takes its current name from a town on the southwestern coast of Norway, in a mountainous area at the head of the Hardanger fjord.

Hardanger is a form of cutwork embroidery which is believed to have originated in Asia and Persia. Hardanger has also been referred to as Norwegian lacemaking because of the way it looks. Portions of the background fabric are cut away and discarded, with the edges worked over in buttonhole stitches. It is worked on white even weave fabric, usually linen or cotton, using linen or pearl cotton threads.

The patterns were used as a favourite decoration worked in bands of embroidery across tablecloths, napkins, towels, bedspreads, pillows and curtains and clothing items such as aprons, shirts, and Norwegian folk costumes.

In simpler forms of hardanger, the holes themselves decorate the fabric but in more advanced techniques, the holes can be filled in with threads in various patterns to create a more elaborate design. You can see both examples in the pictures.

The traditional designs are geometric and based on several shapes: square, rectangle, triangle, diamond, diagonal, zig-zag and cross. These shapes are put together to form many different designs but never created pictures. Patterns varied greatly from one family to another and from village to village. Eventually specific designs came to be associated with specific places.

Hardanger uses many easy-to-learn stitches of two basic types. The first is counted thread embroidery with simple stitches which can be altered slightly or combined in many interesting ways to create limitless designs. Together with drawn-thread or cut-work embroidery, this leads to a stunning effect!

It often featured:

* diamond, triangular or square motifs of cutwork
* satin stitching in rectangular blocks (kloster blocks) and other shapes
* pulled thread work in the form of four-sided stitch
* cable stitch
* eyelets

Click this link to see pictures of antique Hardanger Embroidery.

--
Karens Variety is a craft patterns retail site, with a large selection of new and used crochet, knitting, needlework, cross stitch, plastic canvas, tatting, embroidery, macrame, dolls and sewing patterns, craft books and PDF reproductions of vintage patterns and pattern books.
