Puppies just like babies go through the teething stage which means he will chew anything he can get his little teeth on including your shoes, furniture and of course his dog bed.

Chew proof dog bed

Dogs are able to give you great happiness whether you are playing with them, walking them on the street or just plain being lazy with them watching television so don’t they deserve to have something of their own.

Usually people get a dog when he is just a puppy so that you can grow with him and watch as he evolves. The first thing that we get and most of the time its before we even have the dog is the new bed so that he can be comfortable in his new home. When you pick a bed you want to buy one of the most important things to think about is whether the bed should be chewproof.

* Dog Issues

Puppies go through the stage of teething, which basically means he will chew almost anything he gets his teeth on whether they are shoes, furniture or items and especially his bed. This is the main reason why if you have a puppy, the first and certainly the most important should be a chew proof dog bed. You also have the option of looking at vinyl chew proof dog crates. These dog crates work wonders for little puppies who like to bit everything insight until they grow out of their teething stage. They also make chew proof puppy bed. Either of these will work well.

Even though your puppy gets older chewing things isn’t something that he leaves behind. Usually when you discover this its because you found something you liked in the smallest pieces possible. This is when you’ll be very happy if you still have the chew proof dog beds because most times if your puppy learned to chew his bed instead of your shoes that will more than likely last. Its fortunate that when companies make dog beds they keep in mind that dogs have this little habit and mark their items accordingly.

Besides the fact that the bed will be ruined, a good reason to get a chew proof dog bed is if the bed is heated, your dog could get injured if he chews it even if the cords are usually steel wrapped for that reason alone. A chew proof dog bed also ensures that the area stays neat and clean while still allowing the dog to chew his bed all he wants.

* Shopping for a Suitable Dog Bed

Besides keeping in mind the chew proof feature in the dog bed, you can choose any bed based on the size of your dog, its habits and personality and something that matches your home. You will find a huge variety of dog beds, mats, pillows, baskets, donuts, and orthopedic depending on the amount you want to spend.

--
This author lives in Flemington, NJ with her husband and 5 month old daughter and is an expert contributing author for a luxury
elevated dog feeders boutique offering variety of dog beds and orthopedic dog beds.
Protect Your Great Dane With Pet Insurance

Some people fell in love with a Great Dane at first sight. As each breed is distinct from the others, a Great Dane is known for it's giant size yet gentle temperament imposing a friendly nature. The distinction is not only limited to looks and appearance, the needs are distinct too. Perhaps some may think that a Great Dane is highly energetic and needs a lot of exercise and strenuous activities to keep him fit. But astonishingly, the energy of a Great Dane is not as high as other breeds and only needs half an hour walk in addition to some running few times a week.

Just like other breeds, this breed needs proper diet to keep him nourished and proper care and grooming to maintain the health and appearance. It is also the owner's responsibility to protect the pet from minor to life-threatening diseases by having them vaccinated and giving them safe and comfortable sleeping area. But protection for pets could extend beyond that. We all know that health problems may arise any time no matter how hard we try to protect our dear dogs. They may need to see and be treated by vets to nurse them back to good health and lengthen your happy years together. Vet bills may sometimes rise rapidly and soon you can no longer afford to pay those bills. Pity for those animals whose owners aren't wise enough to get a pet insurance for them.

Some pet owners think that pet insurance is just an unnecessary expense especially if the animal is not particularly active and may be less likely to be involved in an accident. But problems do occur whether we want it or not; a chronic illness for example. A chronic illness or a serious health problem could end up costing you too much that is sometimes beyond your budget, so insurance is well worth considering.

There are lots of reliable companies providing pet insurance with different variety of plans. You can select a plan that covers various diseases only, or the one with accident coverage, advertisement for a lost pet or third party damages caused by your pet. Just select a plan depending on your dog's age, sex, breed and physical and mental condition. Consider also your dog's activities, especially if the activity increases the risk of accident.

Are this reasons enough for you to consider a pet insurance? If not, then just think about your sick Great Dane with eyes that seem to plead for your help. Isn't it dreadful to think that your dear pet is asking for your help and all you can do is watch him as the life in his eyes vanish?

--
Richard Cussons is a dog enthusiast.
The Congo and the Timneh are the two main sub-species of the African Grey parrot.

The Congo is a bigger bird with a lighter colour with a dark beak and a red tail. On average they weigh around 400 to 650 grams and are about 12 to 14 inches long from tail to beak.

The Timneh are smaller birds and darker in coloring with a horn coloured upper beak and a maroon tail. They weigh between 275 and 400 grams and measure about 9 to 11 inches from tail to beak.

Since either species have a potential lifetime of over 50 years, this is a lifelong commitment and should never be taken lightly. In general either may live anywhere between 25 to 50 years. It is rumored that the Timneh is not as nervous as the Congo, however, they both share some of the same characteristics.

African Greys are extremely intelligent and are very demanding pets. You must prepare yourself for giving them a good bit of mental and social stimulation. At times this may be challenging since a Grey generally has the emotional needs of a two year old and the intelligence of a five year old.

By their very nature, Greys are terribly nervous birds which can be presented when exposed to something new or strangers. Continual socialization is what they need. Greys are generally a one person bird. However, this can be overcome when all the members of your family take the time to develop a successful family bird.

In order to get the bird accustom to strangers and change begin while it is young. This will also help to eliminate the reputation to biting which is a by product of the lack of socialization. There is no need to push yourself on the bird, take the time to learn its body language and when you should back away. Speak to the bird gently and in a relaxed and calm tone. Soon it will respond to you. Keep in mind that these birds have extremely powerful beaks and when agitated can cause a painful bite.

Diet:

The African Grey requires a healthy nutritious diet. This is vital to the happiness and overall well being of your pet. Problems such as biting, hyperactivity, continuous molting and feather plucking are signs of a poor diet.

One of the most common problems is a deficiency of calcium. This is preventable quite easily by offering the bird calcium and vitamin rich foods such as:

-	Dark leafy greens such as, cabbage, kale and spinach.
-	Beneficial fats such as almonds and palm nuts.
-	Fresh fruits and vegetables are essential daily.
-	Quality seed or pellets daily are necessary and you can make a mixture of both of these.

It is very important that your Grey has a diet that is of good quality and varied. Generally, you Grey will require 40 percent seed and 60 percent fruit and vegetables. You can find a more detailed diet list by visiting our website.

Housing:

The matter of choosing any type of cage is personal, although there are restrictions of money and space. As long as the bar spacing is no larger than about an inch, the bigger the cage the better.

Some things to consider before making a bird cage purchase:

Round cages do not result positively. It can lead to the bird suffering from problems of psychological orientation. You want a cage that is mostly made of horizontal bars. Your Grey will enjoy climbing around in its cage. However, vertical bars do restrict the birds ability to do this. We recommend that you Grey have a 36x24x60 or 92x61x153 in size.

When space is a negative issue you can purchase a cage with a play top for those times the bird is out of its cage. Place the cage in a room in the house that is lively so it can enjoy spending time with the family and interacting with them. Do not place your cage in overly bright windows or in draughts.

You can keep the bird interested and stimulated by adding various types of toys to its cage and then move them around from time to time. They love to chew and when they are finished chewing they chew a little more!

You can keep your bird healthy and happy by providing various types of perches of different materials and dimensions such as natural wood and rope. A sandy or cement perch will help keep its nails trimmed. When you provide various thicknesses of perches you can help keep the birds feet exercised.

African Greys are extremely affectionate and loyal after you gain its trust. This bird will love you for the rest of its life. They are great at mimicking and are great talkers. Some owners say they are the best talkers in the world. They generally develop over a 2000 word vocabulary and can mimic such things as dogs barking, doorbells and telephones ringing. African greys have the emotional needs of a 2 year old and the intelligence of a 4 year old, this shows they can be demanding pets.

They do exceptionally well at stringing words together. However, African Greys are not for just anyone. When you purchase a baby from a breeder you should make sure it was raised in a household situation similar to your own.

Greys are wonderful as long as you fulfill their needs and show them respect. With the proper treatment and care, you will find that you have a beautiful feathery member of your family for all the years to come.

--
For more information please see African Grey Babies Amanda Is a work from home mum of 3 running her own website http://www.bestbabyshop.co.uk

Source: http://www.articletrader.com

What comes into your mind when you think of cavalier King Charles Spaniel? When we speak of this breed, what comes first into the minds of most listeners is its origin; given the name King Charles. Indeed Toy Spaniels have been in existence for many centuries and even until now they are still gaining popularity as household pets among many families.

However, owners and soon-to-be owners should remember that fame and history are not the only things associated with this adorable breed. Two genetic defects common to Cavalier King Charles Spaniel breed are mitral valve disease and syringomyelia. Heart mitral valve disease (MVD) is a degeneration of the heart's mitral valve, one of the four sets of valves in a dog's heart. The disease is characterized by the inability of the longer valve to close fully after each pumping action thus gives way to some blood to flow backwards from the ventricle back into the atrium. Based on statistics, more than half of all Cavalier King Charles Spaniels are affected by the disease at age five thus the expected lifespan is only between seven to ten years.

On the other hand, syringomyelia occurs due to obstruction to cerebrospinal fluid (CSF) flow. Symptoms of the disease may ranger from mild discomfort to severe pain and partial paralysis. Another common symptom of the disease is scratching in the air near the neck thus referred to as "neck scratcher's disease". The disease is usually recognized among dogs between six months to three years of age nevertheless dogs of any age especially those with more severe diseases and unhealthy lifestyle can be affected by the disease.

Keratoconjunctivitis sicca can also be seen in this breed. Also called dry eye, the disease is caused by decreased or inadequate tear production. Infections, trauma or reactions to drugs can cause injury to the tear glands or damage to these glands thus lead to the disease. A dog affected with this disease develops a thick, yellowish discharge. If left untreated, the disease will lead into chronic eye infections and may progress into corneal ulceration and worst, blindness. Other eye disorders common to this breed are cataracts, corneal dystrophy, distichiasis, dry eye syndrome, entropion, microphthalmia, progressive retinal degeneration and retinal dysplasia.

By learning more about these diseases, you can take steps to prevent them from coming and harming your beloved canine friend.

--
Richard Cussons writes information articles on different breeds of dog such as the Cavalier King Charles Spaniel.
Diabetes is cats is a relatively common problem. The condition occurs when insulin fails to balance levels of glucose. Obese and older cats have an increased risk of developing diabetes, although it can affect cats of any age or breed.

Cause

Cat diabetes occurs because either the body doesn't use produced insulin as it should or because the body isn't producing enough insulin to begin with. There is no known reason why this happens, although certain conditions can increase the risk of developing this disease.

One of the most common factors that increase the risk of development of diabetes is obesity. Genetics, hormone imbalances, and pancreatic diseases can also play a role. In some cases, medications can even cause it.

Type

Diabetes in cats doesn't usually produce any symptoms in its early stages. When the disease advances, your cat may develop liver disease and secondary bacterial infections. This causes signs of disease such as increased urination, rough hair, lethargy, and increased appetite. Although cats can start to eat more, they sometimes lose weight. If your cat develops a disorder known as neuropathy, his hind lings will also become weak.

Diagnosis

At the beginning of the visit, your veterinarian will perform a thorough physical examination. Based upon your cat's symptoms, he may suspect diabetes. The diagnosis will be determined if lab tests show extremely high levels of sugar in your cat's urine and blood.

Treatment

Cat diabetes is a condition that must be treated, or it will eventually be fatal. Like humans, this condition needs to be treated with insulin shots either once or twice a day. In rare cases, cats can control the disease with a special diet and oral medication. You should also be aware that your cat's insulin dosage may fluctuate. So, you will need to schedule regular visits to the vet to determine the ideal dosage.

--
There are many cat diseases that can affect your pet.
Pets are an integral part of a loving family. In times of need, especially with today’s slowing economy, food can be scarce and hard to come by for many families throughout the US. Local area food banks provide families with the much needed food supply. But what about their innocent pets?

In Atlanta, as of mid-2008, there exists two suburban pet food banks. Such organizations and groups are beginning to form throughout metropolitan areas, stemmed from common love for our furry pet friends. When times are tough for a family, pets should be not be neglected and they should be helped out as well. It is the goal of these local pet food banks to assist pets when they are in need.

Local Atlanta community leader Ann King, owner of Blooming Cookies/PAWS Fifth Avenue, has partnered up with local PALS (Pets Are Loving Support) organization to be able to deliver much needed pet food supplies to families and pets. King’s goal is to unite organizations and groups with the common goal of helping families and their beloved pets.
King is meeting with company officials of pet stores and pet food manufacturers to see about getting large donations of pet food. They've also set up drop-off points at more than 20 locations so people can donate dog and cat food. Many donations can be directly given to a family.

Furthermore, such organizations provide great education and tips on proper pet care for all families. During the hot summer months, it is highly recommended to keep fresh food in the bowl. Also cleaning the bowl prior to placing food in it will allow the food to last longer.

Even with the expansion of these community programs, the need for pet food is on the rise. Donations are greatly needed and appreciated.

--
For more information on local pet food banks and how you can help save pets, visit www.bloomingcookies.com.
Fish are an excellent choice for pets. They fit well into any size home or budget and are easy to take care of with very little effort. However there are some common mistakes that novas fish keepers make. A lack of planning is the biggest mistake that leads to all others.

Your plan should start with the type of fish you want to keep. A good choice for beginners would be goldfish or guppies because they are fish that are tolerant of the varying conditions that are common in new aquariums. It is important to start with just a few fish in the beginning because the new fish tank needs time to cycle. The bacteria that is needed by the aquarium to change the toxic ammonia that is produced by the fish and decaying plant and waste matter into harmless nitrate needs time to multiply and grow. This is the cycle a new tank must go through and it takes about eight weeks.

The size of the tank is the next thing to think about because almost everything that is put into the tank is tank size specific. Most people buy the biggest aquarium that they can afford. I would suggest starting with a small tank and then move to a bigger one latter on when you better know what you want after some experience with the new fish. This will save you buying stuff that a basic aquarium dose not need.

Decorating the aquarium is more than just for looks. The fish will be happiest in an environment that best mimics their natural habitat. Fish need places to hide for sleeping or to get away from other aggressive fish in the tank. They also need enough open space to swim, play and feed. Just like people a stressed out fish will be susceptible to illness and disease. The plants, gravel and decorations come in every color. Your personal taste is all that really matters as far as color goes. Take into consideration the colors and style of the room that the fish tank is in and the colors of the fish. You can look at pictures of other peoples aquariums and get a good idea of what you want before buying a bunch of stuff that does not look good together and winds up wasting you money and being taken out and replaced.

There are a few things the fish need for their happy environment. Things like a filter, air pump, air stone and a heater are all things that may be required. Do some research about these items. Ask people you know that have an aquarium what they use. Most people you will talk to will tell you that they started with a complete aquarium kit that came with everything included and that they had to upgrade some of the equipment making the kit a not so great deal. This is where a good plan will save you money and time. Buying something like a heater that is inadequate for your situation will not work. On the other hand a heater for a larger tank than yours will not work any better it will only cost you more. Only buy what you need no more.

Taking care of fish takes less time effort and expense than almost any other pet. They can be kept in any size apartment, condo or house and they do not stink, make a mess, bark, squawk or do anything except make you comm and happy. The key to setting up a new fish tank is a well thought out plan. A good place on the Internet to look for information about and pictures of all kinds of pets is JimsPets.com. Good luck with your new aquarium.

--
Jeff Mcclure is a featured author at JimsPets.com and you can read more of his articles at JimsPets.com.

Source: http://www.articletrader.com
