You may be wondering what is a probiotic? The term probiotic comes from ‘pro’, which means ‘for’, and ‘bios’, which means ‘life’. So probiotic means ‘for life’. Probiotic is a term used to describe nutritional supplements that contain live bacteria. Almost every brand of supplements out there has its own form of probiotic supplement.

Two of the most abundant and best known probiotics in the intestines are Bifidobacterium and lactobacillus. These probiotics adhere to the intestinal walls and multiply helping keep our bodies healthy. Probiotics help keep fungus and yeast cells at bay. Probiotics help keep your stool soft, well formed, and aids in bowel movements. Probiotics can manufacture B vitamins and vitamin K; they also make lactase the enzyme that digests milk, and dairy products like cheese. Probiotics can help prevent cholesterol from entering the blood stream which means it can lower your total blood level cholesterol. Probiotics can bring balance to the immune system. Probiotics can also reduce dental cavities, aid in weight loss, make our bones strong and healthy, help control acne and help prevent illness such as cancer and autism. They help prevent Gastro intestinal (GI) infections in children who attend day care and elderly who live in a nursing home. Its not a well known fact, almost 70 percent of the body’s immune system is actually located inside the GI tract. (1)

It’s clear that probiotics are essential for proper intestinal health and over all health of the body. These probiotics will grow and multiple in the intestines all your life. It’s easy for the probiotic balance to change and stop multiplying; it’s as simple as getting the flue or traveling to a distant land or if one develops an infection and needs antibiotics. Antibiotics can devastate the probiotic colony in the intestines. The colony of probiotics can easily be overwhelmed so daily supplementation is something everybody should consider for optimal health.

One double blind, placebo controlled study tested over 350 women with IBS. They consumed 1 billion Bifidobacterium each day for four weeks. The women consuming the probiotic experienced a significant reduction in symptoms of IBS. Higher and lower doses were also tried with little added benefit. (2) Another study conducted administered 450 billion cells daily for eight weeks. This study combined Bifidobacterium, lactobacillus and streptococcus blend of probiotics. Patients reported significant improvement in bowel control and less abdominal pain and bloating after 8 weeks. (3)

Choosing the right probiotic is very important. At a minimum, look for a probiotic that is enteric coated. Stomach acid will destroy these live bacteria and enteric coated capsules can help preserve these beneficial bacteria for where they are needed, the intestinal tract.
Probiotics are very vulnerable to the elements. Probiotics are anaerobic organisms so oxygen can kill them. Sunlight or artificial light can kill probiotics; they love the dark and thrive in the lightlessness of the intestines. Make sure you keep your bottle sealed because probiotics do not like moisture either.

You man be thinking why should I buy a probiotic supplement when I can just eat yogurt? This is a good question! Take a look at your yogurt label or better yet look at what’s not on the label. No matter how many lactobacillus and Bifidobacterium were present at the time of manufacturing, there’s no telling how many bacteria is left at the time you eat the yogurt, there is no probiotic potency guarantee. Look for a guarantee with x amount of probiotics on the label per serving. When you eat yogurt there is nothing protecting the probiotics from harsh stomach acids so the amounts that actually make it down to the intestinal tract is very little.

Almost all health problems experienced today are related in some way to the process of digestion. Keep your digestive tract as healthy as possible by taking a high quality probiotic that are viable and robust, that has a guarantee of potency and that is enteric coated. Make sure you take it daily for optimal health.

Getting Started with Healthy Eating. http://www.articletrader.com/health/nutrition/getting-started-with-healthy-eating.html http://www.articletrader.com/health/nutrition/getting-started-with-healthy-eating.html Fri, 08 Jun 2007 00:00:00 -0500 With the rise in obesity reaching epidemic proportions in some countries, more and more people are becoming concerned about their diet. Most people want to improve their diet but find this very challenging in today’s hectic, fast-food environment.

Before embarking on any plan to eat healthier, you first need to evaluate your present diet. How you look, feel, and how long you live can all be affected by diet.

Aim to include a wide variety of foods from different food groups as this will give you more varied nutrients. Each food group will provide different nutrients necessary for a healthy lifestyle.

A good indicator of the state of your diet would be breakfast - or the lack of it! A good balanced breakfast will provide the nutrients and energy needed to start the day and help to stop you reaching for the unhealthy, processed snacks. Always look for low-fat alternatives but be sure to check the labelling as processed foods generally contain a higher level of salt, sugar etc.

Drink plenty of water to keep the system flushed through and to remove any waste products. Waste products contain toxins that will adversely affect your health if not cleaned from your body. Water is necessary to maintain a healthy balance of fluids and this also helps with other areas such as skin and hair condition. Something between 6-8 glasses of water a day is generally considered to be sufficient for most people.

One of the main keys to a healthy diet is variety. With a wide range of fresh meat, fruit, vegetables and dairy products now available no-one should be bored with trying to eat a more healthy diet.

Another major consideration is meal planning, as this will give balance and variety within the diet. Deciding what you will eat, and when, can also help with costs and time management.

As all food groups will contain both healthy and unhealthy foods try to reduce, or cut out, the unhealthy ones and replace them with a healthy alternative. Do not feel that you cannot have any treats because you have chosen to eat healthily. The trick is to have an occasional treat as a reward for sticking to your new diet. This will also give you something to aim for as you learn a new way of managing your food.

To summarize, first look at your diet. Then plan any changes. Be sure to use a variety of food groups to ensure you get the necessary vitamins and nutrients. Check for healthy alternatives and drink plenty of water. Have the occasional treat to keep you on track.

Garlic and a Healthy Cancer Prevention Diet http://www.articletrader.com/health/nutrition/garlic-and-a-healthy-cancer-prevention-diet.html http://www.articletrader.com/health/nutrition/garlic-and-a-healthy-cancer-prevention-diet.html Wed, 20 Dec 2006 00:00:00 -0600 Cancer fighting foods all contain large amounts of certain phytochemicals. Phytochemicals were developed by nature to protect plants against damage caused by insects, disease and environmental stress. These phytochemical molecules are the ones that give fruits and vegetables their brilliant colors, provide the smell to garlic and the astringent taste to tea. It is very likely that these phytochemicals, not the vitamins and minerals, that are the source of the cancer prevention capabilities of these healthy foods.

Current research on the anti-cancer potential of the Allium family – particularly garlic – seems to show that these vegetables seem to reduce the incidence of cancers of the digestive system. Studies have also shown that garlic may also help prevent prostrate cancer. Garlic and onions contain allicin which is unstable and breaks down into a number of phytochemical compounds including diallyl sulfide and diallyl disulfide which appear to increase the ability of immune cells to fight cancer and also break down cancer causing toxic substances. These sulfur-based phytochemicals fight tumor development and are capable of neutralizing the effect of potential nitrite carcinogens which are used as preservatives in some foods. Studies have linked garlic, onions, leeks and chives to lower risk of cancers of the digestive system. The protective effect of garlic seems to be greater than that of onions, even though onion consumption has been shown to reduce the risk of stomach cancer. Most of the available research comes from epidemiologic observational studies comparing populations who do or do not consume garlic and onions. Other studies are based on animal trials and cell culture studies. The October 2000 issue of the American Journal of Nutrition had a summary of a number epidemiologic studies which showed that people who consumed cooked or raw garlic on a regular basis compared to those that ate little or none had about half the risk of stomach cancer and one-third less risk of colorectal cancer. These studies did not show that garlic supplements had the same benefits. It should be noted that these studies are not yet verified by clinical trials in human populations.

Our garlic consumption in North America is much less than many other areas of the world even though population areas where large quantities of garlic are consumed seem to have significantly fewer cancers of the digestive system. In the US, only 20% of the population eats more than 2 grams of garlic per week. Excessive garlic consumption can have adverse effects including bad breath, allergic reactions, stomach disorders and diarrhea. Freshly crushed garlic should be our choice as a source for the anti-cancer compounds we require.

Eating a healthy balanced diet can provide our bodies with many thousands of different phytochemicals. However not all fruits, vegetables and other plant products provide the best anti-cancer phytochemicals. The ten best groups of anti-cancer foods are discussed in our website www.benefits-of-antioxidants.com . They include: berries and citrus fruits, cruciferous vegetables, garlic and onions, green tea, omega-3 essential fatty acids, olive oil, tomatoes, soy products, red wine and dark chocolate.

How The Suddenly Slim Diet Works http://www.articletrader.com/health/nutrition/how-the-suddenly-slim-diet-works.html http://www.articletrader.com/health/nutrition/how-the-suddenly-slim-diet-works.html Thu, 22 May 2008 00:00:00 -0500
The products used in this program have many herbal extracts frequently found in herb-based weight loss products. The diet plan claims that the herbal extracts work by reducing the appetite, increasing energy levels and metabolic rate, and purifying the body in a detoxification process.

The diet program lasts for only ten days, in which time the dieter consumes diet shakes and takes diet pills. The shakes are supposed to satisfy and eliminate hunger and provide the body with important nutrition. The diet supplements and pills have ingredients such as green tea, caffeine, and soy protein to promote health and losing weight.

Before trying any diet supplement or diet drug, it is best to consult your physician about the safety of the diet and whether it is the best option for you. Many herbal ingredients may have positive health effects, but with any drug, there are health risks involved. One such case in point is with diet pills that have the popular herbal ingredient Ephedra, which is banned in the US due to health risks (current formulations of Suddenly Slim products have substituted Ephedra with bitter orange extract).

The Suddenly Slim diet is considered by many to be a "fad diet" that works for some but not all. One of the reasons this program can fail to work is because it is almost impossible to achieve long-lasting weight loss in such a short amount of time. Many people using the Suddenly Slim diet program, report losing weight but end up regaining it after the program is completed. For most people, it takes commitment and lifestyle changes to permanently keep weight off. In most cases, long-term commitments such as good eating habits and an exercise routine will lead to weight loss.

Unfortunately, many people have difficulty maintaining a healthy lifestyle for permanent weight loss. Many fight to lose weight because they suffer from uncontrollable appetites, emotional stress, food cravings, or a lack of motivation. Since these are psychological or "thought-based" problems, hypnotherapy has been shown to be an excellent weight loss tool that helps solve these problems and helps people shed pounds naturally.

One of the greatest uses for hypnosis is for natural appetite regulation. Hypnosis therapy works by tapping into the power of the unconscious mind to treat the root causes of an out-of-control appetite. Many people struggle to control their appetites because they are "emotional eaters," who eat in reaction to their feelings, such as when they are sad or angry. Hypnosis breaks the unconscious link between our emotions and eating to release emotional eaters from the urge to eat too much.

Another reason why an individual may have an out-of-control appetite is because the person is unconsciously "conditioned" to eat in certain scenarios. For example, it is easy to "veg out" in front of the TV and eat a ton of junk food, even when you aren't truly hungry. Hypnosis therapy helps re-train the unconscious mind to extinguish the urge to habitually overeat, resulting in natural appetite suppression without pills or drugs.

Hypnosis therapy is also an effective tool for overcoming stress. Stress and anxiety often cause people to overeat, or reduces their motivation to exercise and take care of their own well-being. Hypnotic techniques, especially the newer forms called Neuro-Linguistic Programming (NLP), can make you stay positive and deal with stress in a manner that promotes health and a stress-free life.

A lack of motivation is another serious issue that prevents many dieters from achieving their weight loss goals. Weight loss hypnosis and NLP techniques are the answer for enhancing motivation. First, you think about and identify what is most important to you in your life. Then you utilize NLP techniques to make yourself think that the important things in your life will enjoy gains if you exercise and improve your health and your looks. This lets you stay strongly motivated to exercise and tone your body.

Anyone can learn hypnotic techniques and NLP from an excellent hypnotherapy weight loss CD program. Hypnotherapy weight loss CDs tap into the power of the unconscious mind to make dieters take off weight. By extinguishing cravings and urges to overeat, the appetite is controlled in a safe, efficient way. Properly developed hypnotherapy will easily increase one's motivation to exercise and help achieve one's weight loss goals. Because hypnotherapy is so good at helping dieters to lose weight naturally and for good, it has become an immensely popular weight loss aid that is suitable for everyone.

Personal Trainer Toronto http://www.articletrader.com/health/nutrition/personal-trainer-toronto.html http://www.articletrader.com/health/nutrition/personal-trainer-toronto.html Thu, 05 Jul 2007 00:00:00 -0500 Personal training is the skill of teaching a person how to use their body appropriately and resourcefully in every action they perform. It’s not just limited to weight training but also includes muscular and cardiovascular exercises. Due to hasty routines, people usually ignore their health, which costs them dearly and also reduce their competence for work. So it’s very important for all to have a personal trainer who perks up their health.

Personal trainer has a clear understanding of what suits best for the client. Different people have different needs; some need only a session to be briefed while some choose to work with an instructor over a period of time to get in the routine of work out and see concrete results. Others who can afford it choose to work with a trainer forever because clients feel that they will get better and consistent results.

Nowadays personal training is stirring away from the illustration of having your trainer standing next to you shouting, to work fast without considering the endurance and capability of the person. All the trainers now offer clients a wide range of postural exercises and workouts to help them with habitual behavioral changes.

All reputable personal trainers do initial health check to ensure the person is fit for exercising. If needed, a doctor's approval is obtained. Tests include an intake assessment, to recognize concerns and goals. This test follows physical fitness measuring indicators which include strength tests, flexibility tests and abnormalities of posture.
Then the trainer makes a schedule which usually includes warm up, cardiovascular and strength exercises, inert stretching and relaxing time.

Personal trainers train clients a system, with emphasize on proper form, position for injury prevention. Clients are shown by Personal trainers, exercises which are useful and that are risky or a time waste. Some trainers also use machines that are suitable for treatment or supplementary purposes.

Personal trainers generally emphasize upon functional exercises. Few specific functional exercises are basic and important in day to day life. These simple exercises include squats, posing and pulling with your arms, push ups and common and small exercises.

A good trainer adds movements in case of postural issues, for shoulders, rotator cuffs, etc. These exercises are basically to correct present abnormalities. Exercises for a better posture include:
• External rotation targeting rotator cuff muscles
• Abduction for supraspinatus
• Cap push-ups for subscapularis
• Exercises for Gluteal activation
• Pelvic stabilization
• Exercises for Lower trapezius
• Posterior deltoid
Personal trainers also add ancillary exercises to increase the compoundand functional exercises including:
• Straight knee lift and bent knee Calf exercises.
• Exercises for Anterior deltoid
• Exercises for Biceps or triceps
• Glutes Exercises
• Exercises for Grip / Forearm
It is better to check with your Toronto personal trainer prior to finalizing a personal training Toronto routine. There are a few complex aspects of these exercises to consider.
Also not every personal trainer matches completely with every client, they all have different styles, some more certain, some more submissive. It is therefore important for clients to “look around”.

Coral Calcium - Natures Wonder Mineral http://www.articletrader.com/health/nutrition/coral-calcium-natures-wonder-mineral.html http://www.articletrader.com/health/nutrition/coral-calcium-natures-wonder-mineral.html Sun, 10 Jun 2007 00:00:00 -0500
However, despite recent findings, for a great many years, Japanese and American scientists and researchers attributed longevity in Okinawa Prefecture to the climate and diet of the people. This is an obvious misconception that can be proven. In Okinawa, the one thing that we are certain of is that for many years Okinawans have used coral in inventive ways and even when not added in their food preparation, its habitual presence enriches the environment largely through its presence in water. Then in the 1950's Professor Jun Kobayashi revealed his "ground breaking" work that showed "a direct relationship between the 'hard water' that is consumed by Okinawans and their long and healthy life span." The work of Professor Kobyashi was published in the Sokai Journal of Okinawa under the loosely translated title "The secret of health and longevity in Okinawa, where many people live to an advanced age and where the incidence of all diseases is low". Also, in 1985, Dr. Jun Sato, Professor of Okayama University presented his research at the academic society where his investigation concluded that the lower rate of disease and the longevity of the Okinawans "was due to the calcium enriched coral water". Finally, Professor Jun Kobayashi of the University of Okayama presented a paper in 1990 where "he concluded that there was a correlation between longevity and good health and the calcium rich coral water in Okinawa".

Thus, these men of science in Japan have all concluded that the good health and longevity of the Okinawans is due to the calcium rich coral waters, which means that vitamin d (produced though significant exposure to sunlight), working in biological tandem with calcium due to its assistance in its absorption in the intestine, also plays a crucial role in the fountain of youth

Facts About Liquid Vitamin C http://www.articletrader.com/health/nutrition/facts-about-liquid-vitamin-c.html http://www.articletrader.com/health/nutrition/facts-about-liquid-vitamin-c.html Thu, 03 Apr 2008 00:00:00 -0500
Benefits of Vitamin C

Most of us are probably familiar with vitamin C as a great supplement to take when we have colds. In fact, vitamin C's benefits go far beyond that. It can help in collagen production and the recovery of damaged skin and tissues. It also has an important role in protecting the body against infection and increasing iron absorption. Vitamin C is also an antioxidant. It stops free radicals from wreaking too much damage on the different cells of the body.

Vitamin C Deficiency

Vitamin C can easily be obtained from a number of sources. Nonetheless, some people still seem to suffer from deficiencies of this vitamin. In the past, one of the most popular conditions brought about by the lack of vitamin C is scurvy, which may lead to death in some cases. Today, it is a common fact that people who do not have enough of vitamin C may also be more susceptible to infections and other diseases. This is because a deficiency in vitamin C can affect one's natural immunity system.

Why Take Liquid Vitamin C

Unlike some nutrients, vitamin C cannot be naturally generated in the human body. We therefore need to get our daily doses of this crucial vitamin from external sources. The best natural sources of the vitamin are citrus fruits like oranges, grapefruit, pomelo and lemons. It can also be found in vegetables like cauliflower, cabbage and spinach.

It is not always possible to get the required daily doses of vitamin C. Some individuals may also need greater doses of it. In these cases, one may have to take vitamin supplementation. Some may have been used to taking it in solid form. Its liquid form however is often believed to be more effective in efficiently delivering the vitamin to the body's system. As liquid, vitamin C can be better absorbed by the body.

Overdose

In rare instances, some people may get too much vitamin C in their bodies. The most typical symptom is diarrhea. Extreme cases may lead to temporary fatigue and nausea. In even rarer cases, iron poisoning may occur.

It is important to see your doctor if you are taking other supplements and medication or if you have a serious medical condition. In some of these cases, vitamin C may result in negative reactions. Some individuals for example may be at risk of rare iron toxicity because vitamin C increases the absorption rates of iron.

There are many different brands of liquid vitamin C. Some of them may contain synthetic preservatives, flavoring, color enhancers and herbal ingredients. If you are unsure which brand is a good one, you should consult your doctor or perform your own research first.

How to Buy Healthy Foods http://www.articletrader.com/health/nutrition/how-to-buy-healthy-foods.html http://www.articletrader.com/health/nutrition/how-to-buy-healthy-foods.html Mon, 20 Apr 2009 12:31:42 -0500
A good place to begin is by learning about what is in the foods we currently purchase. Next time you head to the grocery store, take a look at the label before you toss that package in your grocery cart. Don't be fooled by claims such as "healthy" or "low-fat" on the front of the package. Check the nutrition label to make sure that these claims are true.

What the nutrition label tells you

The first thing to be aware of when reading a nutrition label is the serving size. In an effort to make the food appear more healthy by being lower in fat or calories, food companies will sometimes list an extremely small portion size. So be aware of what they are calling a portion size.

The next thing listed on the nutrition label after the serving size is the calorie amount and the "% Daily Value" column. The "% Daily Value" is based on a 2,000 calorie per day diet. You may need to make adjustments if your calorie intake is more or less than 2000 calories per day. An ingredient is considered low if it is 5% or less, and high if it is 20% or more.

Underneath the calorie section is the fat content section. Choose foods that are low in saturated fats and trans fats. Try to keep your cholesterol intake to under 300 mg per day. Below the fat content section is the information on carbohydrates, fiber and sugars. Try to reduce your consumption of additional sugars. These can be listed as glucose, sucrose or fructose. Satisfy your sweet tooth with a healthy sweets such as grapes, apples, and strawberries.

On juice containers check to see how much real juice they actually contain. Some juices only contain 10% juice, the rest is sugar and water. Select products that contain 100% juice. When choosing breads, look for those that contain 100% whole wheat. If the first ingredients listed are "unbleached wheat flour," or "unbleached enriched wheat flour" then it is not whole wheat.

What to look for

Try to choose foods that have 5 g or more of fiber per serving. Fiber can help with digestion, and regularity. It can also help to lower the risk of certain diseases such as heart disease, cancer and diabetes. A high fiber diet can also help with weight control, because the fiber helps one to feel fuller, more quickly. Choose foods that have high levels of healthy vitamins and minerals. Look for high levels of iron, calcium and vitamins A and C.

Ingredients on the package will be listed in order. The ingredient in the greatest amount will be listed first and the smallest ingredient will be listed last. Avoid those foods that list enriched ingredients or sugars first.

By paying attention to what we buy at the grocery store and learning to read labels, we can all take an important step towards a healthier life.

The Essential Facts to Keeping Healthy http://www.articletrader.com/health/nutrition/the-essential-facts-to-keeping-healthy.html http://www.articletrader.com/health/nutrition/the-essential-facts-to-keeping-healthy.html Thu, 18 Jan 2007 00:00:00 -0600
There are many health problems and diseases associated with being overweight and obese, for example: skeletal problems, heart disease, diabetes, cancer and sleep apnea to name a few. Studies have also shown that a relationship exists between excessive bodyweight and increased mortality. Increasing one's body weight by 10kg will directly affect their lifespan by decreasing their living years. Obesity is a serious problem, however it can be fought and its effects reversed.

There are a variety of ways of combating obesity and preventing / reversing the health complications that arise from it. Obesity prevention can occur through a number of factors including 1.Dieting 2.Lowering Fat and Cholesterol. 3.Exercise.

1.Diet

Dieting can be extremely difficult, as a matter of fact, in the long term, more diets fail than succeed. So what is the secret to a sustainable and successful diet plan? The answer is lifestyle change. Change the way you eat and change the way you live. If you are seriously thinking of dieting, then think about the foods you eat on a daily basis and substitute them with healthier alternatives. Substitute the fast foods you would normally eat with fresh meats, cereals, fruits and vegetables. Keep score of your daily calorie intake and remember to exercise for at least 30 minutes per day.

2. Lowering Fat and Cholesterol

Inactivity, poor diet and lack of exercise lead to an increase in body fat and a rise in cholesterol. Cholesterol is a type of fat that is essential to the human body, however an excessive buildup of cholesterol in the blood and arteries can lead to serious health complications. Cholesterol is a major contributing factor in the cause of coronary artery disease which can lead to heart attacks. There primary cure for lowering the cholesterol levels is through dieting and reducing the amount of fat in your diet. A change of lifestyle and eating habits is also needed to have an overall impact in reducing and sustaining cholesterol. Below is a list of high cholesterol producing foods that should be avoided:

*Dairy intake – Reduce you high fat dairy consumption by substituting high fat cheeses and milks with low fat ones. You will find many 99% fat free dairy products are now on offer in supermarkets.

*Avoid meats that are high in visible fats and substitute them with lean cut meats and skinless chickens.

*Use healthy cooking oils and margarines. Choose oils that are low in saturated fats such as virgin olive oils and margarines that include plant sterols which help the body absorb less cholesterol.

*Minimise your fast food intake such as pizzas, burgers, fish and chips, and deep fried foods in general.

When combating high cholesterol, changing poor eating habits is only part of the solution, you also need to reduce the amount calories you consume on a daily basis, and that can only be solved through proper dieting and exercise. If unsure about your cholesterol level, it is always advisable that you seek the medical attention from your local physician.

3. Exercise

Exercise is a vital and essential part to our wellbeing. Whether riding a bike or walking 30 minutes a day, mobility is the key to a healthy lifestyle. Regular physical exercise is essential in preventing many bodily disorders including coronary heart disease, obesity and type 2 diabetes. Exercise is also vital in the building of healthy bones, muscles and in bolstering the human immune system.

Dieting, exercise and healthy eating plans are essential factors in maintaining strong and healthy bodies. They are all however interrelated and should be practiced in conjunction with one another; reducing a high cholesterol level depends on healthy eating habits and proper dieting. A proper diet should also be supported with regular and frequent exercise in order to achieve weight loss and an overall healthy lifestyle.

The Top 3 Ways To Eat More Greens http://www.articletrader.com/health/nutrition/the-top-3-ways-to-eat-more-greens.html http://www.articletrader.com/health/nutrition/the-top-3-ways-to-eat-more-greens.html Sun, 21 Oct 2007 00:00:00 -0500
I'll admit, I often have trouble (or sometimes even lack the desire) to eat my greens. There are days when I just don't eat enough of them. I know greens are good. I know I need to eat more greens but I just don't do it.

And then I discovered a fun way to get more greens into my diet. Here are my Top-3 Ways to get more greens into your diet.

1. Make Green Smoothies

Green smoothies are great and my favorite way to consume a large quantity of greens! When I first heard about green smoothies I was a little skeptical about blending fruit and greens and was surprised by the result.

Here are some recipes from my ebook Smoothies for Optimal Health.

Berry Roman Smoothie

1 cup strawberries
2 whole bananas
1/2 bunch romain
1/2 to 1 cup water

Blend fruit and water. Add romaine lettuce. Enjoy.

Being Green Smoothie

2 cups fresh spinach
1 whole grated cucumber or carrot
2 whole bananas
1 whole orange
3 whole apples, juiced

In a blender, whirl together all ingredients until thick and smooth.

2. Make Blended Salads

Once you've gotten used to the taste of greens in your smoothies, you can graduate to making blended salads. You can transition gradually by reducing the amount of fruit in your smoothie and increasing the quantity of greens. Gaspacho is a type of blended salad. Here is one of my favorite recipes (though I will admit it took me a while to get used to the taste and texture of blended salads).

Blended Salad

2 medium tomatoes, roughly chopped
2 ribs of celery
4 leaves lettuce (big)
1 big handful spinach
1 green onion
1/2 avocado
1/4 cup parsley
2 Tbs. dulse flakes
1 Tbs. nori flakes (optional)
Water if needed

Blend the tomatoes together, and add the rest of the ingredients progressively. Use water only if you need to. A blended salad should be quite thick.

3. Find One Good Healthy Salad Dressing

A funny thing happened once I started consuming more greens in my diet. I started to dislike some of my favorite "healthy" dressings. My tastebuds lurched at the taste of olive oil. So I compiled a collection of healthy salad dressings in my ebook "The Top 70 Healthy Salad Dressings You Can Make in Less Than 2 Minutes"

Here's a recipe to get you started.

2 tomatoes or cucumbers
2 Tbs. apple cider vinegar or lemon juice
1 cup fresh dill
1 small avocado

Blend tomatoes and add other ingredients progressively. Blend until smoothie. Add other seasonings if desired. Use more water if necessary.

We know greens are good for us and we should all strive to get more greens in our diet but don't force yourself to eat more greens if you don't like them! You'll get sick easily. Instead, let your innate hunger for greens come back naturally, by slowly incorporating more greens in your diet in the form of green smoothies, blended salads, etc. You'll find that as your diet starts to become cleaner, you will naturally crave more greens and raw foods.
