It should come as no surprise to anyone that obesity also leads to other serious health problems. And one of the worst being diabetes. Due to the growing obesity problem in America, Type 2 Diabetes has simply exploded. While this use to be an adult onset issue it has now spread to our children. Sadly, over one third of all children born today will develop Type 2 Diabetes in their lifetime.

Why is this happening? What is going on here? Unfortunately, the answer is quite simple, it's our eating and exercise habits. Think about how many times you eat fast food every week? For some it's every day. If you're like the average person, you eat fast food 2-3 times a week at a minimum. Fast food is literally killing us. It's loaded with fats, calories, sodium, and sky high amounts of carbohydrates. This is exactly what diabetes thrives on. It's like fertilizer. If you have doubts, take a look at the content labels on fast food, if you can find them. You will be shocked! Or go on diabetes groups.msn.com site and do a search.

Another problem that is creating more diabetics is the intake of soda. Everywhere you go, be it the gas station, store, fast food restaurant, etc., the sizes of sodas being sold are enormous. 10-20 years ago a large soda was considered to be 12-16oz. These days, that's a small drink at best. You're now seeing 48-64oz super big gulps, or hugos. The sugars and carbs that these sodas contain are off the charts, yet our children are drinking them up on a daily basis. The result? A dramatic increase in the number of children under 12 with diabetes.

Thankfully, some of the school systems around the country are getting the message and banning soda and snack machines from schools.

The other big reason for the massive increase in Type 2 Diabetes is from our total lack of any form of exercise. Few people follow any kind of fitness routine, and it seems you hardly see people even go for walks in their own neighborhood. The remote control doesn't qualify as getting physical exercise. Get off the couch and at least begin walking. Exercise is proven to reduce diabetes, as well as so many other health issues. Even if you can only exercise 2-3 times a week for 30 minutes, do it. You will reap the benefits from it quickly.

Diabetes is a serious issue. Left alone it can cause blindness, stroke, kidney failure, heart disease, and death. Determining the exact number of women affected is tricky as most diabulimics are unlikely to admit to skipping insulin injections whilst they are actually in the habit of doing so, but it is clear that this is a growing phenomenon.

Many people believe word is spreading via internet message boards and chat rooms, where existing diabulimics are encouraging more and more women to lose weight by not taking their required insulin doses. Although the practise of losing weight by skipping insulin injections in not a new one, it seems to have grown out of control with the advent of the internet.

So how does missing insulin shots result in weight loss?

Skipping insulin injections can cause diabetics to lose weight rapidly in a number of ways:

a. They are not getting any calories from the food they are consuming as there is no insulin to break down sugars and transport them to the body’s cells.
b. Very high blood sugar levels can cause muscle breakdown resulting in weight loss.
c. Excessive urinating caused by high blood sugar could result in dehydration which also leads to weight loss.

The risks for diabulimics are extremely high

For a diabetic who is dependant on insulin shots, missing their medication can be extremely dangerous. The risks range from kidney and heart disease, to nerve damage resulting in blindness or amputations. Missing vital insulin injections can ultimately increase the risk of a coma and even death.

Matt Hunt, Science Information Manager from the research charity Diabetes UK made the following statement:

“This eating disorder is extremely dangerous. Blood glucose that is too high for too long can cause serious complications, with diabetes being the leading cause of blindness amongst the working population in this country. Cardiovascular disease can also result from long periods of insulin abuse as well as kidney disease and nerve damage.”

If someone you know is skipping insulin injections in order to lose weight you may notice the following symptoms.

1. They have low energy levels and excess fatigue
2. They are going to the toilet more frequently than usual
3. They are eating more than usual but still losing weight

Always encourage someone that you know is skipping insulin injections to get professional help. This is a psychological disorder, and although it may seem illogical to you to risk serious health issues just to be slim, it may not seem that way to the diabulimic.

Balancing the fear of being fat against the fear of critical illness

Those suffering from Diabulimia are often aware of the potential damage they could do by skipping their insulin, but their worries about this are far outweighed by their fear of being fat. The weight loss that results from missing insulin shots is almost immediate and visible, the damage being done to the body is less obvious, occurs more gradually, and is easier to ignore.

Many people suffering from this disorder start small, perhaps missing just a couple of injections to fit into a particular dress for a big night out. Before they know it they may be missing most of their shots, taking just enough stay alive. They reason that they will begin to take their medication again once they are thin enough, but somehow, no matter how much weight they lose, they never believe they are thin enough.

Although gradual weight loss can be very positive for overweight diabetics, enabling them to control their blood sugar more effectively, missing insulin shots is never a good way to lose weight. Although ‘diabulimia’ is not currently an officially recognized medical condition, it is as serious an eating disorder as anorexia or bulimia and it affects a frighteningly large number of diabetic women

It is not sufficient to simply rely on your insulin shots or medication prescribed by your doctor. They cannot do all the work. You will have to learn to regulate your food intake.

With the abundance of food available to us, sometimes it is not easy to choose wisely. That piece of chocolate cake can be much more tempting than having a small fruit salad in natural juices for dessert. A trip to your favorite fast food restaurant is more inviting than bothering to cook a meal on the evening that you come home tired from work. Perhaps all you want to do is curl up on the couch and not even bother to drag the family out for a meal. Blood Sugar Normal Level Test

A blood sugar normal level or blood glucose level measures how well a person's body is processing the sugar that is taken in through the diet. Test results can be obtained by a simple finger stick with a glucometer or with a traditional laboratory blood test. There are different tests that can determine blood sugar levels at various stages, such as a fasting, random, 2-hour glucose tolerance test, and glycated hemoglobin test. All of these tests measure blood sugar normal levels with a simple procedure, but the results can differentiate between normal, pre-diabetes, and type 1 or type 2 diabetes. There may also be other signs and symptoms present that are indicative of a blood sugar level being too low or too high.

Most of the time a blood sugar level is drawn randomly, unless the primary doctor has specifically requested a patient to fast before having the test done. A random test does not take into consideration the last time a person ate a meal or a snack. According to doctors, blood sugar normal levels reading should be less than 100 mg/dL; pre-diabetes is suggested if the level is greater than 100 mg/dL but less than 199 mg/dL. A level above 200 mg/dL or higher is indicative of either type 1 or type 2 diabetes. A fasting blood sugar level is drawn after an eight hour period with no food or beverages with sugar or calories.

This test is usually drawn first thing in the morning, and a blood sugar normal level is considered to be below 70 mg/dL. If diabetes is suspected after preliminary tests, then a 2-hour glucose tolerance test is ordered. Fasting is also required for this test to get accurate results. Patients first drink a sugary liquid and then have their blood drawn two hours later. A normal reading is less than 140 mg/dL, pre-diabetes is suggested if level is between 140-199 mg/dL, and type 1 or type 2 if level is 200 mg/dL or higher. The glycated hemoglobin or hemoglobin A1C test is used not to diagnose diabetes, but to manage ongoing treatment. It measures the average blood sugar level for the previous three month period, and indicates how well diabetes has been managed during that time.

It is recommended that everyone have their blood sugar level checked from time to time to make sure that glucose is within the normal range. Low and high blood sugar levels are usually accompanied by symptoms that are related to how low or high glucose is in the bloodstream. Once diabetes is diagnosed, patients are instructed on how to control the disease, cut out refined sugar from the diet, get adequate exercise on a regular basis, and follow their prescribed plan of care. If you will continue to test your blood sugar normal level, you're more likely to live a happy and healthy life for many years to come.

With so many diabetes treatments on the market which one do you choose? The task might be a daunting one. I have found that out. So I have tried a few remedies. With varying degrees of success. I have used a remedy of over 250 Chinese herbs in a bottle that worked very well. I have taken herbs and I exercise. I have meditated. All these diabetes treatments made sense to me. And I guess by trying different things I have found out what works best for me with regard to my diabetes disease.

Seeing some success form herbs, exercise, meditation and EFT has helped. But the number one reason I turned the corner on this disease was a dietary change. Without question my new diet has helped me th emost. I have seen it in my feet. The natural color of my feet is being restored. The tingling feeling has almost gone away since I started to seriously adjust my food intake.

Why do you think I started to get better?

I listened with new ears and I have taken her advice. In only one week of eating raw fruits and raw vegetables the tingling feeling in my feet has subsided greatly. My blood sugar has hit a new low of 91.

Changing my diet has worked for me. Here is my list of beneficial things to do to help you with your diabetes disease. They are listed In my order of preference.

1 Begin with a good diet plan - Watch your fat, carbohydrate and sugar intake.
2 Exercise on a regular basis - at least three times per week
3 Take the stress out of your life as best you can

Those are my top three suggestions. Your state of affairs may be different than mine. By doing what works for you will keep you on the track to better health. Once I adopted my new plan as the way to go things got easier regarding my diet.

Finding something that worked was the key component for me. When I say what worked I am talking about taking my diabetes disease out of the danger zone. Getting my blood sugar level to "between 80-120" on a consistent level is what I mean by out of the danger zone Herbs and exercise helped. I still take herbs and exercise regularly. Be careful what you eat. Because you have the diabetes disease it is time to be sensitive about food. This was the one thing I had to address being a diabetic. Even though I was very rluctant at first I had to change my habits about eating.

In the case of type 1, or juvenile, diabetes the pancreas is not able to produce sufficient insulin with the result that extra insulin needs to be administered medically.
If your glucose level tends to be higher than normal, you are considered to be pre-diabetic or insulin resistant. The symptoms of insulin resistance are very subtle and not as obvious as the other types.The one thing most pre-diabetics have in common is excess weight.

This condition has in the past several years been showing up even in children and adolescents. This is not caused by the pancreas failing to produce enough insulin but, rather, by an overabundance of glucose in the bloodstream.

Excess fat tissue is laden with glucose and this eventually causes insulin resistance. The pancreas increases insulin production in order to offset the glut of glucose. On the other hand the muscle, fat and liver cells get overwhelmed with the overabundance of both glucose and insulin. This explains why these folk have high levels of both glucose and insulin in their bloodstream.

Insulin resistance, if left unchecked, will develop into type 2 diabetes and resulting complications. But, the good news is that this can be avoided by losing on average 5 to 7 percent of body weight, or 10 to 15 pounds simply by making changes in diet and physical exercise.

Some natural dietary sources that are said to be highly effective in blood sugar metabolism are magnesium and zinc. Magnesium is present in green leafy vegetables, whole grains, nuts and seeds and zinc in oysters, ginger root, pecans, egg yolk, beef liver, sardines, almonds, and chicken.

In August 2000, the U.S. Department of Agriculture announced findings resulting from a number of studies that cinnamon increased glucose metabolism in people with type 2 diabetes 20-fold!
In Pakistan there was an independent study of 60 type 2 diabetics who had been treated for several years with anti-diabetic drugs, but not insulin. According to the journal Diabetes Care, the subjects received about two teaspoons of a day for 40 days.

The results greatly surprised the scientists. The cinnamon reduced the blood sugar levels, increased insulin production, and lowered the blood cholesterol in all the patients! These benefits lasted even 20 days after the end of the study. Furthermore, their LDL, or bad, blood cholesterol levels were lowered between 10 to 26 percent, but the HDL, or good cholesterol, levels were not reduced!
These great findings for type 2 diabetics give much hope for the many millions of both type 2 and insulin resistant sufferers in the world.

With the right nutrition, you can lower your blood sugar levels, improve your cholesterol ratios, reverse your insulin resistance (also referred to as Metabolic Syndrome), and prevent type 2 diabetes altogether. An added side benefit of cinnamon (as if the above isn’t exciting enough) is that it will help you lose weight!
