What am I talking about? Mental depression, of course. Although men are as likely to become depressed as women are, it’s unfortunate that the world in general perceives that it’s women who suffer most from depression. This could of course be due to a of lot things like constant mood swings and outright irritability to depressive chocolate-eating-binge-days when “that time of the month” comes around. Those are the days when you just want to curl up somewhere and quietly brood.

However it is also true that a large percentage of people who suffer from depression aren’t only women, but includes hale and hearty men, along with people suffering from other illnesses. These illnesses could be life-threatening or even life-sapping, or they could be just such a constant in a person’s life that the weight of living with it day in and day out takes its toll and gives rise to mental depression.

There are other reasons why mental depression could arise besides ill health, and these are many and varied. Some of them can include your lifestyle. So if you’re living at either extreme of lifestyle, you’re also a good candidate for mental depression. If you’re poor and don’t have two pennies to rub together stress can take its toll on you and leave you rolling in despair and mental depression. The same goes if you’re rich as well, you might not have the constant worry of not being able to fend for yourself, or not knowing where your next meal will come from, but stress will also play a great part in your life as well.

Stress however, isn’t the only factor that can lead to mental depression, but it can be a leading factor. And even though you might not even realize it, stress comes in many shapes and forms, and most of the time they can all lead to you suffering from some form or other of mental depression. Peer pressure is a good example, as is pressure brought to bear from home and from work. Let’s not forget the pressures that we suffer when we set ourselves a goal and fail to meet the mark. Sometimes this kind of pressure can be the greatest of all, and can lead to a total breakdown on your part or a sink into the miasma that is mental depression.

Depression is however, in and of itself, a normal reaction that most people suffer from without it leading to the more serious conditions of mental depression. This is where a person suffering from depression can’t bring themselves out of it. If life were full of sunshine everyday, then we wouldn’t really appreciate what we have. Everyone needs a little rain in their lives now and again just to help them see that the sunshine really is worth having.

The drug is popular also because it doesn't cause weight gain - making it an attractive choice for those dissatisfied with other medications. Some common side effects include rare incidents of skin rash, nausea, dizziness, distorted vision and migraines or headaches.

Tegretol Anti-Manic Drug

Tegretol is typically used as an anti-manic drug, though it's not very effective at treating depression. Common side effects include liver problems, blurred vision, dizziness, nausea and it's also known to reduce the efficacy of birth control pills.

Trileptal Control of Mania

Like Tegretol, Trileptal is used to control episodes of mania. However, it's not as effective as Tegretol. That said, the side effects are drastically reduced and not as damaging to the liver as Tegretol. If you're using oral contraceptives, be aware that Trileptal can interfere with their efficacy.

Topomax

Topomax is usually prescribed in conjunction with other bipolar medications. It's used to control weight gain and generally induces weight loss. However, common side effects include a foggy feeling, slowed thinking and dullness. It also interferes with oral contraceptives.

Zyprexa

Zyprexa is a drug that's often prescribed to people living with bipolar disorder as part of their medications, but it's mainly used as an anti-psychotic drug and is very powerful. It's available in a generic form known as olanzapine.

Depending upon their conditions and the symptoms that are displayed there are certain types of depression medications that doctors will prescribe. The main new types of depression medications include Selective Serotonin Reuptake Inhibitors (SSRIs), Tricyclics and Monoamine Oxidase Inhibitors (MAOIs).

While the treatment for these medications is continuing, it usually takes a few weeks before there are any noticeable signs of improvement. Any depression medications that do not show any signs of progress needs to be gradually phased out. Once your doctor has changed your medication you will need to continue the treatment for results to show themselves.

With all of the depression medications that are available you need to be aware that there are various side effects present in these tablets. Many of the side effects are known by doctors who can inform you of their effects. There are other side effects that are not known as the medications interact with your body’s biochemistry. Therefore if you experience any unknown side effects you should inform your doctor immediately so that these effects can be examined to see if they are life threatening. Dizziness, headaches, dry mouth, sexual problems, nervousness, insomnia, agitation, nausea, drowsiness, blurred vision, bladder problems and constipation are the known side effects of various depression medications.

Selective Serotonin Reuptake Inhibitors or SSRIs work by maximizing the natural chemical levels in the brain. Anyone who is on a course of MAOIs will have certain dietary restrictions that they must follow. Foods and drinks like cheeses and red wines must be avoided because they contain high levels of the chemical Tyramine. Any interaction between the MAOIs and the Tyramine can increase the blood pressure leading to a stroke.

Tricyclics are also prescribed for use in treating Major Depression. Tricyclic depression medications have a few side effects that are temporary. Even though these side effects are temporary they can be very annoying. Should any of the side effects persist you should inform your doctor about them. The side effects include dry mouth, constipation, bladder problems, sexual problems, blurred visions, dizziness and daytime drowsiness.

The needles used in acupuncture are extremely fine and cause virtually no pain when being used - there may be a slight feeling of discomfort or pressure, when being treated with needles. Many people claim to experience a warm comforting feeling when the needles are inserted. Acupuncture needles are always sterilized and procedures are completely safe.

Research has also been done on the effects of electro-acupuncture. As the name suggests, this technique involves passing a very small electrical current through acupuncture needles. Initial results indicate that those who undergo this technique also benefit from a general feeling of well being and invigoration.

The techniques and the benefits of acupuncture are still a mystery to many people - to the uninitiated, it isn't considered real medicine. However, acupuncture is becoming more and more acceptable - there are an estimated 9,000 practitioners throughout the US and around 15 million Americans have now benefited from this ancient technique.

1) One tip that is recommended by doctors for helping to overcome a panic attack is to breathe into a paper bag. Make sure you cover your mouth and nose and breathe into the bag until you start to feel the panic subsiding.

2) Another way of stopping the panic attack before it happens is by hyperventilating. If you do this on purpose, it puts all your thoughts into what you are doing and stops the attack from taking center stage.

3) When you feel the attack coming on, try other modes of behavior to stop it. Think of a funny thing that happened to you. Try singing a song or reciting a poem that you like. Using something to take your mind off the attack and onto something else may stop it before it gets started.

4) If you know there are circumstances that cause your panic attacks, try to control the circumstances. For instance, if you notice that you start to feel anxiety and feel panicky when you have to do a certain thing, then the attack is probably triggered by anxiety. If at all possible, avoid the person or the thing that causes you this anxiety.

5) Physical conditions can cause panic attacks. Diabetes, puberty, high blood pressure, and poor nutritional diets can all cause panic attacks. Not only can they cause them but a panic attack can trigger a physical problem such as a heart attack or stroke. So make sure you have a physical and talk to your doctor about any problems you are having.

6) Cognitive behavior therapy is a way of overcoming anxiety attacks. Focusing on changing the way you think about things and understanding why you think this way is the first step in this psychotherapy. This treatment is based on learning why you have the thoughts you have and controlling the panic and feelings of impending doom.

7) Exposure to anything that causes your panic attacks is one way of combating this attack. By intentionally exposing yourself to the situation, you learn that it is not to be feared or dreaded.

If you take steps to understand what is happening to you and realize there is help available, that is the most important step in ridding yourself of panic attacks. Seek help, so you don’t have to do it alone.

Humans are capable of extremely complex thought, but that doesn't mean that everything we encounter needs to be complex. In fact, if you look closely, you will realize that even that which seems complex is really built of very simple and basic building blocks. DNA, which codes for everything we are, has only four bases. These bases--adenine, cytosine, guanine and thymine--all form matching base pairs. That is four protein bases, four identifiable sources of DNA, which is the basis for every cell, every aspect of ourselves. This very coding which is responsible for everything from eye color to passing on genetic diseases is a complex matter that is built up of simple components.

You can choose to look at your life and your experience of it as being too complex and involved to change using only a few tools, but the reality is that every human being has the capacity to manifest their own reality and manipulate their experiences, whether they have read a positive thinking book to learn more about the subject or not. You don't need to be aware of the concept of positive psychology to live its principles. However, if you are not already living the principles, then learning more can be a very valuable tool for incorporating it into your life.

Would you like to be more fulfilled in your life, have more energy for the projects you desire to focus on? Are you tired of negative thoughts, self-judgment and doubt? If so, it is time to change all of that. No one else can do it for you, and if they proclaim otherwise, don't believe them. All anyone else can do are share the tools that are used in the process of reclaiming a positive outlook. You will have to do the work yourself, once given the knowledge.

Once you've gotten started, you have the opportunity to practice what you believe. If you "fall off the wagon" and find yourself engaging in self-destructive behavior or dwelling on negative thoughts, your first reaction might be to get down on yourself. However, that is simply feeding your negative experience. You might instead choose (yes, that's right, you have a choice) to be thankful that it was brought to your awareness and choose to focus on turning that into a positive experience for yourself. It can be a very freeing experience to realize that these are just little reminders of the way that you want to live, and a chance to reaffirm that choice.
