The Best Prison Film

Directed by Frank Darabont. With Tim Robbins, Morgan Freeman, and Bob Gunton."The Shawshank Redemption" is a short story written by Stephen King.The main theme of this film is about two imprisoned men bond over a number of years, finding solace and eventual redemption through acts of common decency.

The film portrays Andy[Tim Robbins] spending nearly two decades in the cruelty of Shawshank State Prison, a fictional penitentiary in Maine, and his friendship with Red [Morgan Freeman], a fellow inmate. It is frequently ranked amongst the greatest prison movies of all time.

This story starts in 1947 when a young banker,Andy,gets convicted of murdering his wife and her lover on mostly circumstantial evidence.Andy is shipped out to Shawshank prison where eventually he meets up with Red, who is a clever supplier of contraband. Eventually Andy and Red become friends but Andy is beaten and raped by a group of sadistic inmates known as the "Sisters".

However Andy's knowledge of finances makes him a favorite of not only the guards but also of the warden. He sets up a makeshift office and as his clientele grows. He's now doing financial favors for the entire prison staff and guards from other prisons.

He is once again beaten by the "sisters", but this time the guards commit viglante punishement against the Sisters leader[Boggs] who ends up hospitalized. After this incident Andy is never bothered by any of the inmates again. Boggs is finally paroled, but he commites suicide by hanging himself. It seems that he could not cope with life outside the prison wallsafter being incarcerated for many years.

Warden Samual Norton [Bob Gunton] senses the money he could make off of Andy's skills and sets up a program where he puts prison inmates to work at local construction projects.Andy hides the embezzled funds for Norton but when a new prisoner enters the picture and confirms Andy's claim of innocence.
Norton,fearing the worst if Andy is set free, has Hardley[Clancy Brown], the prison guard captain, kill the new inmate and puts Andy in solitary confinement. He tells Andy that he will withdraw the guards protection if he
does not continue to conspire with him. Andy spends two months in solitary confinement.

Andy manages to escape after 19 years and assumes the fake identity that he had created for the warden for the sole purpose of concealing the warden's
embezzlement.Andy withdraws the funds,even wearing Norton's clean suit and shoes, that he had deposited for the warden over the years.He also sends evidence ofthe scams to a local newspaper that exposes the warden. Upon being confronted, Norton is arrested but ends up committing suicide in his own office.

Soon after Red is paroled and ends up digging up the money that Andy had told him about earlier and he eventually reunites with Andy on the coast of Mexico.

This film seems to make us feel as if we are part of a family even thou it is set inside prison walls. I think that the clue to this is in part of the title "Redemption". I also believe that through Andy's exampleof being true to oneself and never giving is a prime example of the lesson that this film offers.

Much of the movie involves quiet, solitude, and philosophical discussions about life. Even today manypeople value this film with reverence. It's popularity just continues to grow.And that is why I consider"The Shawshank Redemption" the best prison film of all times.

nBack in 1994, Shahrukh Khan's movie Ram Jaane released along with Aamir Khan's Akele Hum Akele Tum released on the same day. Believe it or not, both of them bombed. While SRK earned some pittance in the north, Aamir Khan's movie got some revenue in Mumbai and western parts of India. Since then both Aamir Khan and Shahrukh Khan have been very conscious about the movies they sign or produce. Viewers may note that both are friends but careful not to be subdued by one another. For instance, Rang De Basanti, Aamir Khan's iconic film had Shahrukh Khan initially in the role of R. Madhavan which he had declined. Shahrukh Khan had also asked Aamir Khan to be a part of Om Shanti Om, item number, but Aamir Khan had declined, because he was "busy".
nAlso Shahrukh Khan's loss has been Aamir Khan's gain and vice versa. Darr was supposed to star Aamir Khan who had doubts about doing a villain's role. The gutsy SRK did it anyway. Similarly Lagaan was offered to Shahrukh Khan who didnt think it would work and Aamir Khan ended up making history out of Lagaan.
nCut to 2007- 2008. Both the Khans, Aamir Khan and Shahrukh Khan size up for the competition in a big manner and pay attention to marketing their films in a sassy manner. Last year in 2007, Shahrukh Khan did his best to promote and market his film Om Shanti Om in the best manner possible, and the efforts paid off. Om Shanti Om became one of the biggest all time hits in Bollywood. Contrast to Aamir Khan who used low key marketing and let the product for itself in the form of his directoral debut Taare Zameen Par. But just as collections picked up, Aamir Khan made sure that Taare Zameen Par was reached out to everyone. He held charity screenings, marketed star kid Darsheel Safary in the best manner possible and did everything to ensure that Taare Zameen Par stayed in public memory for ever. Not surprisingly, considering Taare Zameen Par is one of the best movies of our times.
nIn 2008; ie now, Shahrukh Khan has gone for low key marketing. He did not market Rab Ne Bana Di Jodi aggressively. He stated that it was not the right time to promote or talk about his film considering the tragic 26/11 scenario. Though there was low key advertising and promotion, Rab Ne Bana Di Jodi is doing roaring business, proving that Brand Shahrukh is Brand Shahrukh. Well, Aamir Khan who adopted a low key strategy for TZP is now going all ends fired for Ghajini. He built an 8 packs physique an impressive one at that, following SRK's six packs wonder which he build for Om Shanti Om. Aamir Khan has come up with slick promotion tactics for Ghajini, be it print, television or online. He had promoted Jaane Tu Ya Jaane Na well, but for Ghajini, he is leaving no stone unturned. Aamir Khan recently asked theatre staff of Big Cinemas and PVR, which are playing Rab Ne Bana Di Jodi, to adopt the Ghajini hair cut. It is evident: you are watching Rab Ne Bana Di Jodi with the aura of Ghajini around you!
nAsked what SRK thought of Aamir Khan's recent strategy for Ghajini, Shahrukh Khan claimed, "I think it is a good strategy. You take the biggest brand in the country that is SRK and then use that platform to publicise yourself. I think Aamir rocks. The problem is that I cannot use any another brand because there is no one bigger than me".

Indie Film The Graduates Rocks Box Office

So, I saw this movie the other week because a friend told me it was online for free as some kind of a promo. I wasn't expecting much - it looked like another standard teen sex romp movie on the outside - but I found that there was a lot more to "The Graduates" than other movies in its genre.

Let's face it, a lot of comedies made today suck. I mean: "Scream 4"!? "Disaster Movie"? Come on! What happened to the smart, clever movies that people like Steve Martin USED to make, like "The Jerk?" Now all you have to do is say or do something outlandish or weird in order to get a movie made (cough - Will Ferrell).

Judd Apatow's crew are on the right track. They've put the emphasis back on character and relationships, but the people that did "The Graduates" seem to be pushing for more - something with quality acting and grounded relationships - things that people can relate to and connect to and FEEL for.

I don't remember the last time I saw a teen sex comedy or coming of age comedy where I really gave a hoot whether the characters/actors lived or died - and that's just what happened for me with "The Graduates." I liked "The Graduates." I really did. I liked it even MORE when I found out that it was made for under $100,000.00. Now that's impressive. Think of how much money is wasted on such terrible movies, then see this movie - wow.

I saw all these bizarre reviews/comments on their page which really didn't make sense - a rating of 4.4? Weird, vague comments by other users who didn't seem to be talking about the same movie I saw and openly admitting that they only watched 30 mins of a 90 min film? I hope that this blemish doesn't hurt the success of this otherwise well-received film.

The plot is pretty typical, but it's what they DO with it that matters. The cinematography and direction is pretty straight forward, which makes sense for a film like this on this scale - you can only do so much with a small budget and you only SHOULD do so much with a character-driven piece.

The acting? From these unknowns? Really kind of impressive - I saw that Nick Vergara, who plays Mattie in the film, got commended by my favorite website: FilmschoolRejects.com. I agree with their review. There really are no weak links in this film in terms of the talent.

Introduction To Blu-ray

Blu-ray, also known as Blu-ray Disc (BD), is the name of the most technologically advanced optical disc storage medium on the market. Blu-ray was developed by the Blu-ray Disc Association (BDA), which is a group of the worlds leading consumer electronics, computer hardware and motion picture companies. The BD disc has the same physical dimensions as a standard DVD and CD, but its main advantages are more storage space for data and the ability to store high-definition video. This allows Blu-ray players to play the highest quality movies at 1080p resolution with an HDMI cable. Blu-ray Disks are able to hold up to ten times more storage capacity than a traditional DVD, that is 25GB on a single-layer disc and 50GB on a dual-layer disc. Recent developments by Pioneer players have pushed the storage capacity to 500GB on a single disc by using 20 layers but they are still developiing and perfecting the technology.

If you like burning with your existing DVD burner on your computer, you will love a Blu-ray burner. The Blu-ray format is able to store much more data due to its blue-violet laser which has a shorter wave length than the DVD standard of a red laser. This offers the Blu-ray media to focus the laser with even greater precision offering the data to be packed more tightly and use less space on the disc. That is where is can hold ten times as much data, a DVD single layer will hold 4.7GB where as a dual-layer Blu-ray disc will hold 50GB. Many Bly-ray players are backwards compatible with DVD and CD discs so you can watch your current collection.

On Going Development

The companies in the Blu-ray Disc Association are working on improving Blu-ray discs and making them cheaper. There are over 1200 Blu-ray movies currently on Blu-ray discs and they are always releasing more every week. Currently, the companies are working on making quad-layer 100GB discs, 200GB discs and even a 20 layer 500GB disc. There are also Mini Blu-ray Discs which have been developed for compact camcorders and other compact recording devices. But the most exciting development has to be the recordable Blu-ray disc. As with DVD, they will have a single use disc or BD-R and a disc that can be erased and re-recorded multiple times, the BD-RE. The first recordable discs were released in February 2008 and in March 2008, BD-R gained official support from the Sony Playstation 3.
