They believe the changes demanded by C4, in order for the film to go ahead, were tantamount to self-censorship.

The C4 account differs widely from that of i-contact and poses the question just who is Channel 4 afraid of? The Independent Broadcasting Commission (ITC), whose code they cite as the reason for the cuts, or their advertisers and programme sponsors? Given, in the first quarter of this year, broadcast advertising revenue reduced dramatically it is not surprising many are suspicious it is the latter.

We put this, and other questions, to the Deputy Commissioning Editor, (Independent Film and Video) Jess Search, who was responsible for the commissioning of alt.news@4. Jess has declined to comment to Getethical, informing us she/he has nothing further to add to the responses made on the IndyMedia site.

Censorship or just questionable taste?

It all started just over 6 weeks ago, when i-contact were approached by WarkClements, a Glasgow based independent production company working with C4. As WarkClements explained, in their original email to activists, they wanted 'to challenge the mainstream news agenda, focus attention on topics which are usually swept under the corporate media carpet, empower citizen activists (esp. those with video cameras!) and promote proactive analysis of 'the news' rather than passive consumption of a sanitised object'.

Although trepidatious about working with the mainstream media, i-contact, believing they had some semblance of editorial control, decided to go ahead. Ian Ferguson of i-contact says, 'We were told at the start that we could not target individual corporations for fear of redress. We couldn't systematically pick on individual multinationals, but had to spread it about a bit …ok ok we thought - we can deal with that. What slowly began to emerge was that we couldn't target ANY multinational corporations at all.'

Subvertising, also known as 'cultural jamming' and most popularised by AdBusters (www.adbusters.org), a North American 'anti-media' group, has been described as 'the Art of Cultural resistance' Multi-nationals and their brands are turned on their heads with their familiar slogans and messages subverted to undermine the original message, coming up with something a lot nearer to the truth. For example, a famous Adbusters advert transforms Joe Camel into Joe Chemo.

Among the subvertisements i-contact submitted and were subsequently rejected by C4 were the following:

Reason why not: Nescafe would freak!


Changing tack, i-contact proposed making a film about a group of Billboard Activists in Bristol. The footage was to end with a shot of a billboard pulled down by ropes.

Guess what? Just as the final edit was booked, C4 decided the billboard image would have to be removed. At this stage, i-contact took the decision to pull their film. Ian Ferguson, again 'We felt that C4 had given us two options - comply with their demands and submit a shite watered down film or that we withdraw the film. We chose the latter as we felt that C4 were asking us to misrepresent the good folk that we'd been filming'.

In response to this and other comments by i-contact, Jess Search has written 'Our decision to ask for the shot of the billboard coming down to be removed was based on the ITC Code alone and had absolutely nothing to do with the channel's advertising interests.'

Because a child accused of committing the above crimes must be tried as an adult, early consultation with a lawyer is crucial. There are possible ways to reduce the charges and get the case sent to juvenile court where the child will be treated more fairly. A lawyer will have to work closely with the judge and district attorney to transfer a case.

There is increasing research and study into the psychology of children and teen minds and how charging and punishment in adult court does not fairly or effectively treat delinquent behavior. The Department of Justice has compiled these studies concluding that children are likely not deterred by the threat of adult prosecution and recidivism is actually worse for those kids exposed to adult court and prison. See Juvenile Justice Bulletin, OJJDP, August 2008 available at www.ojp.usdoj.gov. Such research and scholarship can be useful in negotiating with the district attorney in your case.

If a lawyer does not obtain a transfer from either the district attorney or the judge, it is almost impossible to appeal the issue. In Martin v. State, 256 Ga. App. 527 (2002), the Court of Appeals stressed that the judge is under no duty to transfer a case or investigate whether to transfer.

It is equally important to fight transfer to superior court. The juvenile court can transfer a case to superior court if there are reasonable grounds to believe that the child committed the delinquent act alleged; that the child is not mentally retarded or mentally ill; that the interests of the child and the community require the transfer be made; and that the child was at least 15 years of age at the time of the alleged delinquent conduct. O.C.G.A. § 15-11-30.2.

School Searches & Interrogations

Increasingly, children are being searched and interrogated while at school. These actions by school officials and police at school often lead not only to school punishment, but also charges in juvenile court or even adult charges in superior court. Because of the increasing stakes, scrutiny and oversight of the searches and interrogations that are taking place in schools are crucial to the criminal defense of a child. In these circumstances, a motion to suppress a child's school statements or evidence found through a search is often the first line

In the Interest of T.A.G., 292 Ga. App. 48 (2008)

T.A.G. was implicated in a robbery of two boys at school, and an assistant principal took him to his office to question him. T.A.G. admitted taking money from one of the kids, but not from the other. In a second interview, T.A.G. admitted taking money from the second kid as well.

A school resource officer (a police officer assigned to the school) was present at the second interview. The officer did not ask questions and was there for "safety purposes." The principal questioned the student and asked the officer if the student could be charged with a crime, the officer answered that he could be charged with robbery.

The trial court refused to suppress the first statement finding that there was no police involvement. The court granted the motion as to the second statement because a police officer was involved. The court found that the police were trying to usurp the student's Miranda rights by having the school official ask all the questions but then using the statements as evidence against the child.

The Court of Appeals affirmed the trial court's decision citing State v. Young, 234 Ga. 488 (1975). In Young, the Georgia Supreme Court held that there are three types of people: (1) private individuals; (2) government agents whose conduct constitutes state action; and (3) police who are subject to the Fourth Amendment and the exclusionary rule.

School officials are considered type 2 people. When they violate the Fourth Amendment, they are subject to a civil damages claim, but the violation does not result in the exclusion of the evidence. When school officials get police involved, however, both Miranda and the Fourth Amendment apply.

State v. K.L.M., 278 Ga. App. 219 (2006)

A student overheard that K.L.M. was arranging to sell drugs during school, and told the principal. The principal called a public safety officer for assistance. When questioned, K. refuses to speak. The principal said, "Search him!" and the officer searched K and found marijuana.

The trial court granted K's motion to suppress, and the Court of Appeals affirmed. A school official could have gotten away with the search, but the officer could not. The fact that the officer was acting at the behest of the principal did not excuse him from the requirement that he have probable cause to search a subject.

It is imperative to fight the evidence and charges against children who are in a vulnerable position to be abused by the system. A lawyer who is knowledgeable of the available remedies is paramount to a desirable result.

The news follows revelations that the London and Paris Olympic torch relay stops were policed by an elite "Flame Protection Unit" hand picked from special police units of the People's Armed Police, China's internal security force.

The so called "Flame attendants" are usually responsible for fighting unrest and maintaining internal stability in China. Tens of thousands of the "Wujing," as the People's Armed Police are called in Chinese, recently took part in crackdowns against demonstrators in Tibet and neighboring regions.The blue-suited goons were seen physically assaulting demonstrators and even Olympic officials and the torch bearers themselves.

Those present at the demonstrations have told reporters that the paramilitaries seemed to believe they have superiority over domestic police forces and were essentially running the show.

The British government has refused to comment on who authorized these hired thugs to have free reign over the streets of London, including Downing Street, despite questions from the opposition party.

These representatives of the Chinese Communist police state are today policing the streets of a portion of a major American city.

By introducing new colors with throw pillows, you can gradually change the feel of the living room. Recovering furniture is a bit more expensive and thus may not be practically done on a budget. Throw blankets are also an option.

The second idea is to rearrange items in the living room. This can go for accent pieces like end tables, lamps, pictures, and paintings. Further, you can move the furniture around into different configurations. The best thing to do here is to try different combinations and find out what creates the new look that you like. You may also find that different groupings of furniture may create more interaction for the family.

A third idea is to add new accents to the living room. Items such as rugs, lamps, pictures, paintings, plants, vases and many other items can be introduced to enhance the image of the room. As mentioned earlier, these pieces as well can introduce new colors or themes to a room. Many interior designers even suggest changing out items according to the different seasons. This keeps the look changing every few months and can provide fun for the family.

In summary, there are many things that can be done to rejuvenate the look your living room. The options available to you really depend on the budget that you have for the project. Even those on a limited budget can use their ingenuity to change the look of their home and make them feel good about the style of their surroundings

Frustration must be one of the reasons. Do men enjoy taking out their frustration of career failures and problems on women? Or they are sadists? If they do not like their woman, they should separate. DNA Ancestry Testing – Y-Chromosome and Mitochondial DNA

The first thing that genealogists look for is a father-to-son linkage, tracked down the Y chromosome which only men posses. Therefore, they are able to observe the Y chromosome that appears in other people and compare them, to determine where a paternal link may be present. This comparison, in essence, allows for the genealogist to try and find paternal linkages amongst people. The other thing that can be done is to link maternal DNA. This in particular is a very powerful testing method that allows for accurate tracking back over many generations because of the mitochondria.

Unlike DNA found in the nucleus, which can be altered and changes as environments change, mitochondrial DNA is a direct connection from child to mother that can’t be altered along the way. By taking a sample of the mitochondrial DNA, which is different than the DNA found in the nucleus, the genealogist can determine a maternal linkage. By taking this information, they can, once again, find, perhaps those long lost cousins or celebrity ancestors.

DNA Ancestry Testing – Matching to a DNA Database

However, can this really be effective at tracing family lines? How can they tell you who you’re related to throughout history? Some online ancestry websites create a database of DNA against which your can be matched. By taking a simple mouth swab and run the DNA tests, they then save the DNA profile that is collected. However, the key is for them to continuously compare other people’s DNA profiles to what your profile is. In essence, this will create a massive database that will determine instantly if a piece of code is a direct comparison to yours. So, as the database grows more and more, more and more relatives and ancestors can be discovered for more and more people.

DNA Ancestry Testing – Determine geographical ancestry

Furthermore, these DNA tests are able to help you find out where you come from. It’s argued that 170,000 years ago, humans left Africa and migrated elsewhere across the globe. Some went to Europe, some went to southern Africa, while others went to Asia to settle. By comparing the DNA profile of a person to that of researched ethnic groups, it is possible to provide information about where people are from.

DNA testing has become a very useful method for people to find long lost relatives. Furthermore, the argument of the true nature of one’s ethnic origins can finally be resolved by DNA testing processes. Of course, as the databases grow and more research is conducted on, the usefulness of these types of tests will increase greatly.
