There are a million scams lurking around on the internet. I sure hope you’ve never been the victim of one, but chances are you’ve probably noticed a least one scam. A lot of these scams can be luring and tempting and can easily be detected…if you know what you’re looking for.

I’m very passionate about alarming people of various internet scams, in hopes that they will save their money! For this reason I would like to take the time and inform you of the scams I have almost fallen victim to.


I was in the comfort of my own home, searching around on the internet for various wholesale information and companies. I received an email from a “wholesaler” that claimed to have a small yet successful electronic business. At a first glance this person seemed to be a legit supplier of very well priced electronics. He provided me with an eBay ID, web address, and a few comforting words.

The first part of the puzzle that didn’t fit came when I searched for his ID on eBay. The ID showed up with a very large number of positive feedbacks, but none of those feedbacks were as a seller. That seemed somewhat suspicious to me, I contacted him and was told that they were looking for resellers of their products for that reason they didn’t sell on eBay. I thought to myself, well, I guess that is a decent explanation.

I asked many questions, many of which were answered. The only questions that he “forgot”/avoided to answer were questions of personal information (phone #, address, etc...).

I also was concerned because the seller was located overseas and there is not a lot of recourse in case a problem a rised. I let him know and he directed me to an escrow service. He reassured me
that by using escrow neither parties would be able to scam one another. He directed me to http://www.global-parcel-service.org, at first glance this “company” looks to run a legit business.

After I thought about it for awhile I realized how fishy a company with a UPS-like logo that I’ve never heard of. I typed in a few variations of global parcel service into the Google search engine and to my astonishment there were very few results. The only results I received were message board posts of http://www.global-parcel-service.org being a front for scams!

The moral of this story is to do your research!

Spy ware, viruses, trogan horses, and all sorts of other malevolent programs are all trying to take control of your computer.

What can we do about it?
How can we be sure that we are properly protected against them?

A hacker will generally not be interested in doing damage to your PC. His main interest is in gaining control of your computer so that he can use it to send out hundreds of thousands of e-mails in your name with the intention of crashing your mail server.

This can get you into very serious trouble with the server. This is something that you do not want. How are you going to prove that you were not to blame?

How do the hackers do it?
What tools do they use?

A port scanner.
What is a port scanner?
A port scanner can locate PCs that are on line and check for an open port.
A hacker using a program such as ‘Super Scan’ can find an open port to gain entrance to your computer. Once in, he can use your computer as if it were his own. The only difference is that to all intents and purposes it is you that is causing all of the trouble.

The main port that the hacker is interested in is port 80. This is the one that you use to log on to the internet.

I am not going to confuse you with all the various programs that are designed to show you what ports are open at any particular time. What you need to know is how to protect your computer against these attacks.

There are a number of programs designed to show you what is going on inside your PC. I will give you a short list that are recommended by some of the program makers.

The one that I would not be without is: www.testmyfirewall.com As its name implies it will test your firewall for flaws and scan for open ports and any other security problems you may have.

You do have a firewall, don’t you?

Another one is: www.pestscan.com This will scan for any nasties that are already on the computer.

Lastly, I use: http://www.security.symantec.com This will run a security check of all my systems.

Don’t put of what you should be doing today. Make sure that your protection is doing its job. Check that you have the latest version of whatever protection you are using. An out of date system is worse than useless. It gives a false sense of security and suddenly you find yourself in serious trouble with your ISP.

It is your responsibility to ensure that your computer will not cause problems for someone else. There are so many free systems out there that you have no excuse for not using one or more of them.

In no hurry, completely content and relaxed because you don’t have the stress that 90% of America has called “A JOB”. On the way to the kitchen, you find your little ones peeking around the corner in attempt to give Daddy a good morning “BOO”. You decide to play along and act really surprised when they jump out even though this is the everyday routine. At this point, you see your wife walking down the hall with a smile on her face and greet her good morning with another kiss. You have breakfast with your family then head to the office (first door to the left). You check a few emails make a few calls then call it quits for the day. After this hard days work ( ha ha) you decide to take your family on a surprise trip to Sea World. They are excited when they hear the news and begin packing for the trip. On the way out you decide to check the mail and find a nice check made out to you for $18,578.63. You hand the check over to you wife; she looks at it and says “not bad for a weeks work”. You both chuckle and head to your destination.

Now that’s what I call living! Please take this dream and expand on it, don’t let the ups and downs of life come crashing down on your dream and kill it forever. You deserve to live it so LIVE IT.

Some items to consider when starting an online forum include.

Cost - Often you can find them for free. There will probably be some advertising on the site, but don't most sites now a days?

Features - Does the forum support avatars, private messages, user levels, themes, etc.

Security - Is it possible to create forums that only register users can post in? Helps to avoid those spammers.

I cannot stress the last one enough. You should be completely able to control who is in your forums. One bad apple spoils the bunch. On that same note, it is common for a forums to have moderators. These are people that help enforce the rules in the forum. Make sure your choose your help wisely. When it comes to administrators, there should only ever be one. Administrators have the keys to the city and can set your forum ablaze.

Finally to make a forum a success you need to attract people to it to join. Obviously if it is for a church or some other established group, this is relatively easy. Tell your friends, family, club members. If you are starting from scratch, do the same. Tell people, show people, invite people. Check to see if your forum site is listed in search engines like google. Once you get past that initial setup and recruitment your will soon be on your way to having a forum that you and your friends can enjoy.

I presume that you have already zeroed in on the concept of your site or a blog. The next thing you would think on is what are the subcategories(you know them as Links) that you can sum up on the main page, and also what else you are going to present on the main page so that the visitor understands what this site is for.

Now comes the question, To Adsense or not to Adsense...(If you do not know what Adsense is, they are Google Sponsored context-targetted ads that you can place on your sites which can earn you money when someone clicks on them).

I will take two similar examples and bring out the subtle difference between them to let you know which site will make profit from Adsense. Let us consider two hypothetical sites A and B.

Let us say that site A brings out reviews of all science-fiction books in the market. The homepage gives a brief idea about the site and this is linked to all the reviews, one review per page.

And now take site B which also deals with science fiction books, but focussses on the writing aspect. In short site B teaches people how to write such a book.

Now, guess which will make more Adsense money? Lets take it on a case-on-case basis. Site A, no matter brings out the review on every possible Science fiction book in market. But Adsense ads are context targetted. That is, Google scans through the page and provides ads based on the words it sees on a page. That means the first book could deal with Michael on his time machine and second book could deal with Rob on his rocket. Do you think the ads would be very relevant to the visitor. The ads would then pertain to rocket science books and stuff which the visitor is not likely to click.

But take Site B. Here every page is likely to deal with how to write such a book. And when Adsense scans through such a page, it provides ads about sites that also provide writing skilla and techniques; very relevant to the context of the site. That means the visitor is more likely to click on the ads.

And what about the owner of Site A? Will he make money? Why not, since the site deals with book reviews, the visitor is more likely to proceed to purchase the book. So provide Amazon links to the books which is likely to get you commissions in tens of dollars rather in cents in case of Adsense ads.

So, it should always be a wise decision to choose the kind of ads that you serve on a site, because too many ads on a site is likely to make the visitor tired of your site and you might end not seeing him again.
