When watching Lost, you become immersed in a world that is both terrifying and fascinating as people lose the polite masks that they wear in day to day life.

The show first aired on September of 2004 and in the three season following, ABC has reaped the rewards of its popular and critical success. With around 15.5 million views per episode, this show has been a credit to its network and to its creators, J.J. Abrams, Damon Lindelof, and Jeffery Lieber.

One of the things that distinguishes this show is its large ensemble cast. At the beginning of the series, the viewer is introduced to characters that seem like they can be summed up in a glance. As the series unfolds, however, it becomes clear that no one is what they seem. This doesn't mean that everyone is secretly working for conflicting government agencies or anything so cliched; the secrets that are hidden are the ones that everyone hides, and some of them are quite dark and deep indeed.

With a cast of 14 speaking characters, there is a lot of flexibility given to the writers and it can be seen that all of the characters' backgrounds were thoroughly thought out. The lead character Jack Shepherd, played by Matthew Fox, is a troubled surgeon who the surviving passengers turn to for leadership. Opposite Shepherd is the young Australian woman Claire, whose late-term pregnancy is the least of her concerns after the crash. The way isn't smooth on the island and group relations are often made more difficult by the many conflicting personalities.

James "Sawyer" Ford is a conman played by Josh Holloway who creates much of the conflict for the first season, while Naveen Andrews plays Sayid Jarrah, an Iraqi Republican Guard who acts as a voice of reason but is hiding secrets of his own. Sun-Hwa Kwon is played delicately and with a great deal of restraint by Yunjin Kim, and her relationship with her taciturn husband, Jin-Soo Kwon (played by Daniel Dae Kim) provides a deeper view of the affect the crash has on the psyches of the survivors. These are just a few of the characters that are portrayed on Lost and absolutely none of them can be summed up in a few brief sentences.

When Magic was not enough

The Power of three will set you free.

And you thought they can magically brush all their cares away? Three witches destined for magic greatness, the Charmed ones as they are popularly known, drew great TV following with their supernatural-effects among the dedicated TV viewers. Prudence “Prue” Halliwell (Shannen Doherty), the eldest sister who had the power of telekinesis; Piper Halliwell, the witch who has the power to freeze molecules; and Phoebe Halliwell, the youngest and rebellious sister who has the power of premonition – these three blood-bound witches became the most powerful witches of all time. Enduring for eight long seasons, these three magically captured the hearts of televiewers with the whisk of the hands and catchy incantations.

However, even with their apparent control over their powers, these cool and modern-day witches have constantly faced, lost to, but, eventually managed to get over with daily wiccan stresses. In one episode, Piper cried a river because the Elders, supreme protectors of good, had to take her husband away from her. Even as she experienced what seemed like an anxiety disorder, she vowed with all her witchly powers that she will one day get her husband back.

Leo (Brian Krause), Piper's husband also had his share of panic, or anxiety attacks. He discovered that his son Chris, was killed by their trusted friend Gideon – who was also an Elder. He wreaked havoc as he hurled thunder from his arms and shot it across the room. These manifestations of anxiety attacks was due to his overwhelming grief over his son's early demise.

Another turning point of the Charmed Life series was when their eldest sister Prue died because time was manipulated by the Source (highest demon). The remaining witches grew skeptical about their destiny and found themselves on the verge of breaking point. Good thing is, the power of three was reconstituted with the advent of their half-sister Paige. Paige Matthews, was the daughter of Paricia Halliwell, the Charmed Trio's mother. However, Piper, the closest to Prue, gave Paige a hard time because she did not let go of Prue's memory. With her grief and anxiety attacks, she became a creature called “Fury”, a curse that almost made her destroy her own sister. In the end, she did managed to bring her emotions across to the right place – Prue's grave.

Even though blessed with wiccan powers, Piper, Phoebe, and Paige, constantly struggled with different emotions that no spell can totally dispel. But the good things is, as always perceived in the TV series – their most trusted power over mind boggling trivialities and blood thirsty enemies are not their wiccan gifts. Their answer is their sisterly bond --- which also became their best anxiety relief. Sisterhood, not their inherent powers, was their best anxiety relief and power against all that the underworld can hurl at them. In the end, after years of wiccan supremacy, the Charmed Ones managed to keep their family legacy, which was written in their book, The Book of Shadows.

So, let's take it from the Charmed Ones – family ties, not any magic, is the best cure for any anxiety.

Damages on the FX Network - A Great Story with an Award Winning Cast

Addiction can be a terrible thing. It becomes a problem which leaves you craving more. Damages, which has won star Glen Close both an Emmy and Golden Globe, shows this truth in a brutal light. Close is not the only one on Damages so honored. Many of the actors, creators, and writers on Damages have been recognized for their outstanding work.

Glenn Close stars as Patty Hewes, a high stakes litigator with the law firm Hewes and Associates. She, again, is the person you love to hate, a part she portrays so well. Here appears Ellen Parsons, portrayed by actress Rose Byrne, who is a newly-minted graduate that turned down lucrative offers from other firms for an opportunity to work with Patty Hewes. While their personalities are disparate, they agree that they'll never be controlled by anyone else. As these characters evolve, you see some amazing performances.

The creators of Damages use innovative techniques to intersperse past events, the present, and the future in a unique presentation that just simply works. If you miss even a minute of this show, you are likely to miss a key plot development. You must remain focused to keep up with the twisting storyline as it develops. And it's important to be observant. Take for example the moment in the shows beginning episode when Ray Fiske examines the collar worn by Saffron. Characters come and go and you are expected to remember them. You should be aware that at least one person you like will be gone. In the series you never know who will come back for the next episode. Damages has a first season run of 13 shows, but only some of the starting cast will comeback for a second series.

Will I continue to be addicted to Damages? Is it possible for the show's creators to continue to generate such enjoyable material? Are there still more twists and turns left to fill another season or two with such intense intrigue? Wishing is all we can do! The Law of Averages is something that many gamblers hold close to their heart. It is something that comes up in every gambling game that involves pure chance, and it is particularly applicable to games such as roulette.

The Law of Averages states that the results of any random event will even out in the short term. For instance, using an example of the game of roulette, the law states that if there have been a number of successive blacks, then there is a higher probability that the next spin will result in the ball landing in a red pocket than a black one.

The Law of Averages is closely related to another law that is known as ‘The Law of Large Numbers'. Using a similar example, this law states that with increasing numbers of spins of the wheel, the number of reds (and of blacks) will approach and remain close to fifty percent.

It is easy to see why people get these two laws mixed up. The Law of Large Numbers (LoLL) is real and an easily derived and proven law. The Law of Averages (LoA) is a nonsense by which the human mind is readily deceived.

The differences between the LoA and the LoLL are perfectly illustrated by another concept that is termed the Gambler's fallacy which again is based on the expected outcome of a random event being influenced by history. We shall again use roulette to illustrate it.

If the roulette wheel is spun 21 times, then the chance of getting 21 reds is around 1 in 2,000,000. But, if there have already been 20 reds, the chance of the 21st spin being red is 50%. The probability of 20 reds and one black is thus identical to the probability of getting 21 reds, both about one in two million.

Terry Pratchet, the author of an excellent modern fantasy set in what he calls Discworld, has invented characters who believe that if the chances of something happening are exactly a million to one, its outcome is guaranteed.

The National Association for Stock Car Auto Racing (NASCAR) will be completing 60 years this December, when the first meeting was organized all those years ago by Bill France Sr., to discuss problems faced by stock car racing. From that first humble meeting, NASCAR has become one of the most popular spectator sports in the world. No one present in that meeting could ever have dreamed that NASCAR would turn out to become what it is today!

The Stock Car Evolution

The first race under the aegis of NASCAR was held on February 15, 1948 at Daytona Beach. This was the post WWII era. Obviously, there was a shortage of new cars. Most people were driving pre-war models, which were in a rattletrap condition, to say the least. The cars were ‘modified,’ which consisted of merely tweaking and tuning the engine.

Ropes sufficed as seat belts, and the more colorful drivers used aircraft harnesses. Roll bars, which have been mandated since 1952, were not in use during those early years.

The ‘stock car’ designation was strictly enforced and brought cars from diverse manufacturers, such as Buick, Cadillac, Chrysler, Ford, Hudson, Kaiser, Lincoln, Mercury and Oldsmobile. One of the greatest problems was the failure of the wheels and the suspensions, as the racing surfaces were rough, dirt tracks.

As stock car racing gained popularity, there was fierce competition, and this made modifications necessary. Many modifications were brought in, in the interest of safety, and many special ‘high performance’ parts found there way into the mainstream models. This enabled these ‘special’ parts to be used in NASCAR racing. The first special production was that of ‘racing tires,’ which in 1952, were manufactured and distributed by Pure Oil Company.

This made quite a change from the normal ‘street’ tires. Development in tires continued, with both Firestone, and Goodyear – to some degree – took keen interest. Such developments were necessitated by increase in car speeds.

In 1952, two-way radios were used for the first time in a NASCAR race, and today it is a vital piece of equipment. Faced with a spate of hubs, axles, and suspension failures, the Oldsmobile, Lincoln and Hudson car companies introduced usage kits, in 1953.

In those early times, racing drivers did not stick to one particular model, or even make. They fairly jumped from one model, or make, to another, depending on what car or model they thought was suitable for their needs.

Today, the cars and the tracks used in NASCAR racing are a far cry from what they were all those five and six decades ago, when there were ‘true’ stock cars, racing on rough and dirt tracks.
