The market in the UK for educational and informative guides and books relating to pregnancy, childbirth, babies and young children is massive. These days it is very common for pregnant individuals and/or couples to throw themselves wholeheartedly into a range guide books covering all stages of pregnancy and childbirth and indeed the first stages of a child's life and development. Parents of today like to be well informed and prepared, secure in the knowledge they are doing what is best for their baby.

How many of these proactive, seemingly prepared parents to be, also spend time reading and learning about what to do in an emergency first aid situation? How many of them would know how to administer paediatric first aid on their child?

Guide books and education resources are available on this subject, as are specific training courses including a new online learning resource from the British Red Cross. The new computer tool covers a number of topics and offers a range of materials, including videos, quizzes, animations, audio and downloadable resources. Something like this is a fantastic resource and Joe Milligan the head of first aid services said "This great new resource demonstrates just how easy it is to pick up life-saving and vital first aid skills". She also added "It will enable busy parents to lean first aid in their own homes at their own pace". The new tool can be accessed by logging onto the Children First Aid website at childrenfirstaid.redcross.org.uk.

Whilst these online learning resources are marvelous interactive learning tools, they are not immediately to hand and cannot be used as quick reference guides. For instance, in an actual emergency situation, they are not easily accessible, certainly not as easily accessed as a hard copy paediatric first aid manual kept in the home alongside a paediatric or family first aid kit.

Indeed a paediatric or family first aid guide should be sat on the bookshelf alongside all of the other baby and family reference guides or kept securely with the family first aid kit.

A range of first aid kits and guidance manuals are available and as with any other pregnancy or child related purchase, a bit of research and thought needs to go in to make sure the right choice is made. First aid kits and manuals can usually be purchased from baby and childrens product retailers but it is probably advisable to shop around the leading suppliers of first aid products and accessories as well. This way you can ensure that you are buying a first aid kit and manual that is actually designed to fit its true purpose, rather than something that is possibly designed to me more gimmicky than truly practical.

A good range of family first aid kits and accessories are available to browse and purchase online from First Aid Warehouse, the UK's leading online supplier of first aid and medical equipment. A specialist in their field, the kits manufactured and supplied by First Aid Warehouse are informed, practical and completed to the highest standards. Their trading partners are among the best in the industry which is why they can offer an extensive range of additional first aid equipment and accessories at fantastic prices.

--

Medical Plasters and Walking
Sticks

Source: http://www.articletrader.com

On Sunday 17th May 2009, many countries across the globe will see in the fourth World Hypertension Day which aims to increase awareness of the dangers of hypertension and to promote healthy lifestyle changes.

The main driving force behind World Hypertension Day is the World Hypertension League (WHL), which is a federation of leagues, societies, and other national bodies devoted to the promotion of the detection, control and prevention of arterial hypertension in populations. The WHL is a division of the International Society of Hypertension (ISH), and is in official relations with the World Health Organisation (WHO).

The theme of the 2009 awareness day is "Salt and High Blood Pressure: Two silent killers". The main purpose of the day is to highlight four main points which are; High blood pressure is the biggest single cause of death worldwide through strokes, heart attacks and kidney diseases; Salt is the major factor putting up blood pressure; Reducing salt intake reduces blood pressure across the population; If salt intake was reduced by half it would save approximately 2.5 million people a year dying unnecessarily of strokes, heart attacks and chronic kidney diseases worldwide.[1]

High blood pressure has been called a "global epidemic" by professionals and has also been dubbed as one of the largest causes of death in the UK. Hypertension along with some other non-communicable diseases in particular cardiovascular disease, diabetes mellitus and chronic kidney disease now pose a greater risk to public health than communicable diseases. Chronic diseases such as high blood pressure already account for 72% of the total global burden of disease in people over 30 an this is expected to increase by 17% over the next decade.

In the UK alone, there are approximately16 million known sufferers of high blood pressure which equates to one in thee of the adult population. High blood pressure can be treated, and even prevented, by making simple lifestyle changes such as exercising more regularly and eating a healthier diet - especially lowering salt intake, cutting back on alcohol consumption and by stopping smoking. Medicines are also available that can help to lower and control blood pressure and clinical tests have proven that taking garlic supplements can have a very positive effect, similar to that of prescription drugs.

For those aware that they suffer from hypertension (huge numbers of people simply do not know that they have the condition which is why it has been dubbed ‘the silent killer'), most will know how important it is to monitor their blood pressure levels. Certainly if they are on prescribed medication, then they will have their blood pressure checked at regular intervals by their GP or Nurse but more and more people are choosing to monitor their blood pressure at home.

--------------------------------------------------------------------------------

[1] World Hypertension Day Invitation Letter 12/2008

--

First Aid Kits ,
Blood Pressure Monitors

Source: http://www.articletrader.com

Accidents occur all year round and a responsible person or family should own some form of first aid equipment anyway but it's getting to that time of year where owning a suitable first aid kit or components is especially important.

With the finer weather comes and increase in home leisure and activity based injuries. People are more inclined to finish off those outstanding DIY jobs, do some work in the garden, go out and about and participate in sports and other leisure related activities. Accidents and injuries can easily occur when taking part in anyone of these pastimes and clearly do judging by national statistics.

Although the statistics collated by the Home and Leisure Accident Surveillance System (HLASS) have not been updated since 2002 (due to withdrawal of funding by the DTI), we can safely and quite accurately assume that the numbers would not have changed that much and if they have at all, would have increased over time. Various other reports indicate that accident levels would have remained broadly the same with a slight increase year on year

The survey in that year revealed that there were approximately 7 million minor injuries suffered in the home or sustained during leisure activities that resulted in visits to accident and emergency departments. The numbers or accidents and injuries that were not reported or treated by professionals cannot be truly or even roughly quantified.

So, what type of first aid items or equipment should one have? As with everything, it depends on the needs of the person or family. What would the first aid kit or products be required for? For instance, for use in the home or on camping trips? What type of injuries would it likely be used on, children's cuts and grazes or DIY injuries? All of these things need to be considered before stocking up on a range of first aid products or a comprehensive first aid kit

A simple needs assessment based around similar questions to the above will often suffice. Adequate first aid provision can be anything depending on your requirements and first aid kits can easily be tailored by removing or adding other key items. A good place to look into first aid kits and general first aid equipment is on the internet. There are some fantastic resources available online and some great specialised online suppliers of first aid equipment. A good information source and probably the leading online retailer of first aid equipment and kits is the First Aid Warehouse. Researching and buying online allows for a more informed decision to be made and with First Aid Warehouse, is often more cost effective than buying on the high street.

Enjoy the spring and the summer and all of the fabulous and fun activities and opportunities that this time of year brings but be sure to keep safety in mind. Try to avoid accidents and be prepared for them if and when they do occur. A happy spring and summer is an injury free spring and summer!

--

Blood Pressure Monitors ,
Medical Plasters

Source: http://www.articletrader.com

First Aid is Not Just Important but Also Crucial to Saving Lives

Knowing what to do in an emergency situation can be the difference between a patients survival or death and long term injury or full recovery. Knowing what to do, or at the very least, what definitely not to do can make all the difference to the outcome of the situation.

A recent news article regarding a road accident in the Barnet and Potters Bar area, highlighted yet again, the unfortunate realities of the dangers imposed by unknowledgeable and untrained people willing to help in emergency situations.

In this particular instance, a car mounted a kerb and crashed into a garden wall also colliding with a group of three pedestrians. Fortunately for the injured pedestrians, the accident occurred just outside the house of an off duty accident and emergency nurse who was able to assist at the scene. Mrs Bassil who has been practicing as a nurse for almost 30 years said “I saw the car in the wall and various people lying around.” She also revealed how the outcome of one of the pedestrians injuries could have been made much worse and how close the 17 year old victim came to potentially suffering a long term injury or life long disability.

Nurse Bassil stated that it was quite apparent that the boy had had broken his leg and had sustained head injuries and then went on to add “There was a gentleman there who said he would try to move him and get him up, I had to scream in his face to leave him”. This is exactly the type of misguided willingness to help that can cause serious problems and can do far more harm than good. Indeed, if Mrs Bassil hadn't been there and the gentleman had got the young victim up onto his feet, it could have been severely detrimental to his outcome.

Knowing how to react and how to treat injuries can play a vital role in preventing an injury or illness becoming more serious. Having common sense at least, or at best, knowledge of first aid is obviously the primary requirement when reacting to emergency situations. Having access to the correct first aid kit and components is the next most important thing. First aid kits contain various product mixes and those utilising its contents, need to understand the uses of the various components.

Sources:

times-series.co.uk/news/4169510.Road_crash_nurse_modest_over_first_aid_role/

--

First Aid Kits ,
Blood Pressure Monitors

Source: http://www.articletrader.com

Assessing the Best Blood Pressure Monitors

Which Blood Pressure Monitor is best?

When searching for a suitable blood pressure monitor for home use, the vast choices and product specifications can be confusing. For hypertension sufferers who wish to monitor their blood pressure at home, it is important that they purchase a unit that is reliable, easy to operate and to easy understand. The cost is also a very important factor for a lot of people and the difference in price between blood pressure monitors can be considerable.

Firstly, the best type of blood pressure monitor for the home user is an automated BP monitor. The results are given on a digital display panel on the unit, may perhaps be stored in the memory and on some BP monitors may even have the capability to print results or download the information to a computer. The automated monitors have a self-inflating cuff that contains sensors that act in the same manner as the doctor or nurse using an aneroid sphyg and listening with a stethoscope. The cuff is easily placed around the upper arm by the user and inflates automatically to the correct size and pressure for the user. It is not recommended at all for the home user to attempt to measure their blood pressure using the same aneroid equipment that tends to be used by professionals in the surgery

As we know, the range and choice of available BP monitors is extremely vast and verging onto being just down right confusing. It is important to be aware of the leading manufacturers in this field and to narrow down your selections to these specific brands. It's not that anything other than these brands are no good, it's more that you are pretty much guaranteed to be getting a certain standard of product. The main names in this field are Omron, A&D and Microlife.

A good place to go when researching blood pressure monitor information is the British Hypertension Society (BHS). The BHS has conducted independent testing of a range of blood pressure monitors and have compiled a list of their recommendations.

Unfortunately although home testing is promoted by the NHS and medical professionals, blood pressure monitors are not available to purchase through the NHS and very little buying advise is available thorough these channels. It is important to find the right supplier who is able to assist you through the process and who will help to relieve some of the stress involved with the purchase.

--

Rollator and
Hearing Aids

Source: http://www.articletrader.com

Netbooks Equal Anytime and Anywhere Computing

Specially designed for accessing the internet and wireless communication on the go, Netbooks are considerably smaller and lighter than the average laptop. Ranging in size from 5 - 10 inches Netbooks typically weigh around a kilo. (Average laptops have a screen size of around 15 inches and weigh around 3 kilos).

They are lighter on the pocket too with the average Netbook costing £270 compared to £910 for the average laptop.

Netbooks do not have the same capabilities or memory available as a laptop, the focus is not in built-in applications but online based ones like Google Docs - taking advantage of the current trend towards “Cloud Computing” in which data is managed and stored on servers and not on the machine itself.

An example of “Cloud Computing” is the website Picnik; an online photo editing service that offers a similar functionality to Photoshop. It is easy to use, there is no need to register, nothing to download, install or save on the machine and you can edit and enhance your photos directly through your web browser for free.

Two things to be aware of when looking to purchase a Netbook is the screen size and resolution;

· You may be required to sideways scroll on some sites especially when reading large amounts of text

· Ensure an adequate battery life, due to the Netbooks being primarily designed for computing on the go

The ASUS EEEPC 701 Netbook retails for around £170 and is ultra portable weighing in at a mere 0.905 kg and measuring 225 mm x 160 mm (half the size of A4!). It also features 512 MB memory and 8 GB storage, a 7 inch display screen and a pretty standard 3 hours battery life. This model offers a Linux operating system which means that an optical drive for installing software is not required.

Alternatively the Toshiba NB100-12A Netbook retails for around £262 and offers a Windows XP operating System. It includes an Intel Atom processor, 1GB RAM, 120GB storage, an 8.9 inch display screen. With only 3.5 hours of battery life it may not be as convenient for use on the move as other makes and models but it is light enough weighing in at just over 1 kilo.

At the top of the price scale the ACER AOD150-1BW 6C Netbook costs £329, weighs only 1.2 kilos and offers a whopping 7 hours of battery life making it a super portable computer for a professional on the move. The display screen is slightly larger at 10cm, and should omit the need for excessive sideways scrolling. This model also has a higher processor cache than the Toshiba and Asus so it should run smoother and quicker. It also includes Intel 945GM shared graphics - an economical solution that borrows your computers main memory to use for graphics.

In the world of technology smaller is considered better, but ensure that you don't choose a machine that is so small that it is too difficult and fiddly to use. As with most things there will have to be a compromise between size, functionality and usability.

--

lg lcd tv,
hp laptop

Source: http://www.articletrader.com

There is a diverse assortment of coffee machines available on the market from many manufactures with an amazing variation in price. If you are looking to buy a coffee machine, think about the kind of coffee you would like to make and drink and how often you plan to use the machine.

Filter Coffee Machines

Filter coffee machines work by cold water being poured into the water reservoir which is then heated to boiling point and drips through the loose ground coffee and filter into the jug below. The jugs are either made of glass and sit on a hot plate or are vacuum flasks.

A basic filter coffee maker; the Delonghi ICM2B retails for around £19. It makes a maximum of 10 cups of coffee at any one time and saves you money by including a permanent coffee filter to eradicate the need of using the disposable filters.

The Siemens TC911P2GB is a top of the range filter coffee maker which retails for around £145. Making a maximum of 8 cups at any one time it includes a vacuum flask to keep the coffee hotter for longer and prevents the coffee tasting stewed. It also includes an aroma retaining lid enabling the coffee to be poured without fully opening the lid and preventing the loss of flavour or heat. Beautifully styled and engineered by F.A. Porsche this coffee machine is finished in brushed steel.

Espresso Coffee Machines

Espresso coffee makers work by either pump or steam and therefore bar pressure is an important factor - the higher the pressure the better the coffee. Pump machines produce a better quality, nicer tasting drink and therefore tend to be more expensive; however there is still a variation in prices between the different models. Only the pump machines are able to produce a Crema.

The Magimix 11259 retails at around £120. With 19 bars of pressure the Magimix uses the increasingly popular Nespresso capsules and innovative technology to ensure a higher quality cup of coffee every time. It can make 20 cups of espresso and includes an aeroccino ideal for making cappuccinos and lattes.

Retailing at around £365 the Francis Francis XI has a lovely unique retro finish it is available in light blue, almond, red and black. With 15 bars of pressure it makes a maximum of 50 cups of espresso and includes a milk frothing arm for making cappuccinos. For optimum versatility this machine can either take freshly ground coffee or espresso pod coffee.

Combination Coffee Machines

Combination coffee makers are able to brew a traditional pot of coffee as well as make espressos and cappuccinos. These units are normally slightly larger and more expensive than a single use machines.

The Morphy Richards 47010 retails at around £59. This machine produces a cup of coffee in 8 minutes using fresh loose ground coffee only. To suit all tastes you can manually customise the strength of your drink. The milk frothing arm uses fresh milk from the carafe to make cappuccinos and lattes. The carafe can be cleaned at the touch of a button and stored in the fridge when not in use.

A bean to cup coffee machine - the Krups XP2000 retails at around £137 but it also includes a pod system for a no mess, no fuss easy coffee making option. The cost of making a cup of coffee with this machine varies between 8p and 26p. The 15 bars of pressure ensure that a quality cup of coffee can be made in less than 1 minute - with no fuss. A nice little extra is the cup warming tray - helping to keep your coffee warmer for longer.

There are a considerable number of coffee machines on the market so make sure that you identify the features and functionality that you consider most important early on. This will help you vastly reduce your shopping time.

--

Integrated Dishwasher,
Washing Machines

Source: http://www.articletrader.com

There is a wide range of hobs available in a variety of styles, colours and sizes with differing functionality. To ensure you make an informed purchase the most important features are outlined below.

Your first choice will be either to buy an electric hob or gas hob.

Electric Hobs

Electric hobs have been traditionally slower to heat up than gas but the latest electric and induction models are amazingly responsive.

· Induction – Made of glass with magnetic coils these plates only heat up when a pan is placed on them. Only cast-iron pans can be used on induction plates

· Solid plate - Generally slower to heat than induction plates but those containing a red dot are slightly faster

· Halogen zones - These respond immediately the hob is switched on and cool considerably quicker than other styles

· Quick-light zones - This method is considerably quicker than solid plates and also heats up the glass quicker than halogen zones

Gas Hobs

Gas hobs give instant and controllable heat. If you don’t have mains supplied gas look for models that come with LPG convertor kits as standard.

· Safety - Flame failure is a useful gas hob feature. Its sensors detect when no heat is being generated and will automatically switch off the gas flow.

· Ignition type - There are two ignition types:
Automatic - As soon as gas is switched on the burners light automatically
Integral - Burners are lit by pushing an ignition button or through the use of a control knob

General Tips

· Surface type - Gas and electric hobs will either have enamel or stainless steel. Ceramic surfaces tend to be used for electric hobs only. Electric and induction hobs are general the easiest to clean as they don’t have fiddly pan rests to deal with

· Number of plates - The standard number of plates for both electric and gas hobs is four. There are hobs though, which can have the number of plates ranging from one to six. The Range style of hobs are very popular at the moment, featuring five rings, with the central ring being a wok burner

· Colour - Hobs with enamel surfaces are available in a variety of colours. Ceramic hobs have a black surface but their frames are available in a wide selection of colours. Stainless steel surfaces may be brushed which offers an alternative effect

· Control panel – If you have young children then look for hobs which have the control panel at the side of the hob rather than the front. This keeps the knobs out of the reach of inquisitive fingers

There are a considerable number of hobs on the market so make sure that you identify the features and functionality that you consider most important early on. This will help you vastly reduce your shopping time.

--

Electric Cookers,
Integrated Dishwasher

Source: http://www.articletrader.com

It’s bad enough that people are tricked and scammed into making purchases by fraudulent traders but it is especially sickening when they pray upon the elderly or disabled.

This disgusting act has been going on all over the place for a very long time, but recently Derbyshire County Council has revealed that it has received numerous complaints from vulnerable and elderly people about companies that are using bullying tactics to get sales.

This particular, recent spell in the Derbyshire area has seen residents receiving cold calls from businesses that are giving the impression that they are actually calling from social services or other health agencies such as the local PCT (Primary Care Trust). This trickery is used in order to obtain a persons trust and to gain access into peoples homes by making appointments fir ‘needs assessments’. It is only when they have gained access into peoples homes that they reveal that they are actually sales people trying to sell mobility products. These bullies of sales people stay within peoples homes for hours pushing and pressurising them into a sale. Often they will not leave until the targeted person gives in and commits to purchasing a product.

Unfortunately instances like this are going on all over the place but this concentrated spate is due to the underhand tactics of one particular company in the Derbyshire area.Cabinet member for community safety Clive Moesby said "We are concerned that vulnerable people may feel pressurised into parting with considerable amounts of money in these situations”. Whist it is not illegal for businesses to cold call potential customers, they are being urged to conduct these canvassing exercises in an ethical manner and not to put people on the spot or to apply unnecessary pressure. Clive Moesby also added "If people do want to buy mobility products such as wheelchairs or scooters they should take their time and compare lots of different products and prices from different retailers before making a decision."

Requesting mail order product brochures or browsing products online are the best methods of comparing mobility products and prices. Online research is probably the most preferable as not only do you have a greater depth of information available at your finger tips, it can be completely anonymous without you having to exchange any personal details (unless of course you make a purchase). Better prices are usually available online, with online suppliers being able to offer good discounts due to the lower administrational costs of online trading.

REFERENCES

burtonmail.co.uk/burtonmail-news/DisplayArticle.asp?ID=400015

dailymail.co.uk/news/article-1152466/One-armed-presenter-scaring-children-parents-tell-BBC.html

--
Walking
Sticks and
Wheelchair Ramps

Source: http://www.articletrader.com
