Aesthetics and Web Design Principles

Submitted by cj

It has been said that a commercial website will survive and thrive based upon its web design? Now, some may very well be shaking nervously at such an assessment. They may be in awe of the process of designing a website. After all, is it not a very complex process that involves a difficult undertaking? Actually, it is a lot easier than one assumes. Quality web design is often a matter of simple logic and common sense. As long as your website design maintains certain aesthetic components, its design can be considered highly valuable.

The clarity of the website itself is very important. When someone lands on the site, they must not be confused by a poor layout. There are many ways to ensure the layout of a website is not confusing. Limiting the different types and sizes of fonts to no more than three will help in this regard. It is also best to keep from using too many different colors on the website as well. Again, two or three different colors are fine since varied colors can help a website from being aesthetically dull. But, too many different colors can be a visual assault that makes determining what is on the website difficult.

It is also best to keep text and illustrations to a minimum when seeking to embody solid web design. Yes, helpful and informative text can make a website very interesting. Illustrations, photos, and videos can also add to the value of a website. The key here is not to overdo it. An entire page of single-spaced text will turn visitors off. The same can be said of too many illustrations as they can confuse the visitor which discourages exploring the site further.

The ability to navigate the website easily is one of the most important aspects of solid web design. Websites will possess multitudes of subpages that visitors travel to from the main homepage. The links to these subpages must be clearly marked and visible. Additionally, always be sure the links on the website work properly. Nothing irks visitors to a site than links that are either broken or direct visitors to the wrong location. If you are relying on your visitors to become customers irking them with broken links certainly will not boost revenue.

Be sure to present a means for the visitor of the site to contact you. This generally refers to adding a "contact us" section to the website where emails for questions and support requests can be sent. Overlooking the inclusion of a means to easily contact the website publisher is a problem all website need to avoid!

Whether you are designing a website yourself through a self-publishing platform or you are using the services of a professional design company, these points are eternal. That's because they represent exactly what people look for when they visit a site. If your website is intended to promote a commercial venture, following the tips presented herein will certainly help your cause.
