Sleek Chic: Designing the Modern Home

Submitted by neillisa

You\'ve probably seen it in pictures: the shiny floors, the stark lighting, the boldly colored walls and shelves. Modern homes have a distinct look that just exudes class and elegance. But many homeowners shy away from this style because they\'re not sure they can pull it off, or because they think it\'s expensive. Well, none of that is true.

Sure, there are a few designer pieces that go for thousands of dollars, but they\'re not all there is to it. Modern home design is all about following your tastes and combining style and function. Keeping that rule in mind, you\'ll see that the modern look isn\'t that hard to achieve-and it can even save you money!

Start by rethinking your home\'s color scheme. Your color choices are virtually unlimited when it comes to home décor. Instead of thinking of individual colors, think of combinations-two or three colors that go well together and create a smooth, consistent theme. The key is to play up the contrast. If you want blue walls, draw attention to it with bright orange lines, yellow panes, and other contrasting elements. Make sure not to use more than three colors, as that can take attention away from your main theme.

Textures also play an important role in modern décor. Most people associate them with smooth, sleek surfaces, but that doesn\'t mean you should give up texture altogether. In fact, that might be just what you need to set your modern design apart. Jazz up a plan white wall with abstract wall art or a natural wood shelf. Pair a chic glass table with a wooden chair. The natural grain and knots of a wood piece add lots of character to a room.

Area rugs are also a popular piece for modern homes. Rugs perfectly embody the modern lifestyle: bold, colorful, and constantly changing. Since you can mix and match rugs as much as you like, you don\'t have to shy away from bold designs, whether it\'s a bright red piece or an interesting pattern. Find one that goes with your color scheme and you\'ve got a nice finishing touch for your modern home!
