How To Utilise Concrete Counters In a Traditional KitcheN

Submitted by forhealth

Concrete counters can be used in modern kitchens and also adapted to traditional kitchens. Concrete counters generally give a modern look, but other materials can be used along with concrete to give it a traditional look. Concrete is a long lasting material and is thus preferred for counters in a kitchen, whether modern or traditional. It can be made to suit and fit any area that a person requires. It can also be given the color that each person desires. This will thus give a traditional kitchen a beautiful look and feel.

A concrete surface can have mosaic tiles at the edge, bits of tile can be inlaid in the backsplash, and fossils can also be embedded in the countertop to give the whole area a traditional feel.

A concrete curved wall with a counter can be used to separate the living room from the kitchen. The colors used in the kitchen can be muted colors like gray and earth colors. The thickness of the countertop can be anywhere between 2.5" to 5".Ceramic tiles with embossing can be used in the backsplash and face of the counter top. A porcelain sink with a concrete counter will give the kitchen a traditional look.

The front face of the countertop can have panels inset in them, so that it reflects the cabinet doors. The depth of the panels can be no more than 3/8 "and the height should be 1/3 to the height of the front face of the countertop. The countertop should have a ¾"overhang to ensure that nothing drips over the cabinet.

You can also have mosaic tiles inlaid on the countertop next to the stoves so that it gives a traditional effect. It can be inlaid in groups of four and with spacing of 1/8" or1/4".

To give a traditional look, you can also have drain board in the sink, lined with tile or marble.

If you decide to use concrete counter top in the kitchen, you should make sure that the cabinets, that are made of wood and are placed underneath, will be able to withstand the weight of the concrete. When concrete is poured at a thickness of two inches, it weighs approximately 12 to 22 pounds per square feet. So, the cabinets should be made of solid wood or plywood. If it is made of particle board or fiberboard, it might not be able to withstand the weight. This will then mean that you should have extra support for the cabinets.

Any concrete counter that is made in the kitchen has to be made after exact measurements are made. Concrete will take some time for the process of curing. So, the concrete should be poured in an area which will be least affected by weather and temperature changes. The mould used should be such that it will be not be difficult to separate the mould from the curing concrete. The edges of the mould should be sealed with bathroom caulking. This will make the edges rounded and not sharp.

These concrete counters in kitchens have to be maintained properly. Daily cleaning with mild soap is advised. However, harsh chemicals and bleach should not be used as they may affect the surface. To give the counter a smooth and slick look, you can apply wax on it on a monthly basis. This will lessen the wear and tear. On a yearly basis you can coat the surface of the concrete counter with a penetrating sealer. This will help to help keep intact the stain resistance of the concrete.

You can get instructions from the person while installing the concrete counters on its maintenance and care. Following the instructions will help you in keeping the counters smooth and looking good.
