Identify Holiday DangersSubmitted by diamondrocket Tue, 30 Dec 2008
The best way to prevent danger in any situation is to identify its potential sources. The holidays bring lots of things to your house: good food, gifts, memories, in-laws and new sources of danger. Know what these sources are and you can insure that you and your family - even the in laws - will have a safe and happy holiday season.
The Christmas Tree -- There are lots of ways that a Christmas tree can bring danger into your home. The most significant way is through fire. If you put up a real or live tree it can be very flammable especially if it gets dried out. But even fake trees that are designed to be fire retardant can be a fire hazard because of their decorations. Electric lights are the biggest cause of Christmas tree fires. Electric Lights -- Make sure that all the lights - not just those that go on the tree - are in good working order. Sometimes we tend to get complacent about electrical components that are stored for most of the year. It?s easy to promise yourself that you'll replace that old string with brittle insulation after this year; don't kid yourself, do it now. Candles -- Some people like to burn candles all year long, some only bring out candles with the rest of their Christmas decorations. Whichever category you fall in make sure that you use them responsibly. Never leave a candle unattended. If you are leaving a room blow out all of the candles before you do so. Also, be aware of the seasonal decorations that you might hang near or over a candle. Garland, paper decorations, even Christmas cards can be a quick and easy source for starting a fire from a small candle flame. Outdoor Decoration -- If you like to drape your house in a million lights or place electrical displays in your front yard make sure that you do so safely and responsibly. Only use lights and decorations that are intended for outdoor use. Double-check all of your wires for brittleness or splits and tears in the insulation. Make sure that any extension cords you use are rated for outdoor use and be careful not to overburden your electrical sockets with too many cords and splitters. Take Care in the Kitchen -- This time of year sees a lot more cooking in many households than the rest of the year. When preparing for a big feast or party allow yourself plenty of time to get all of you dishes prepared. Frantically trying to make everything else is a recipe for disaster and can lead to all kinds of accidents. Holiday safety takes just a few extra moments and can insure a safe and happy time for everyone. Slow down, step back and make sure that you have taken the right precautions. Then step back in and enjoy your friends and family this holiday season. About the Author
