Burglary and Fireproof Safes for Your Home or BusinessSubmitted by wrgb Fri, 2 Jan 2009
If you have valuables that need to be stored in a safe, make sure you choose a model that is burglary rated and fireproof. This article briefly discusses some of the available fireproof safe models that carry both types of ratings. We'll look at models from Cobalt Safes and Fire King Safes.
The fireproof rating of a safe is usually expressed in minutes or hours, and gives an indication of how well the safe would protect it's contents during a fire. An example rating would be a 2 hour fireproof rating. This means that the fireproof safe has been subjected to a 1700 degree F fire for a period of 2 hours, and the temperature inside the safe did not rise above 350 degree F. This is a low enough temperature to protect documents and other durable valuables such as jewelry from permanent damage. The burglary rating, usually expressed in minutes, gives an indication of how difficult the safe is to break into. For example, a 15 minute burglary rating means that it took an experienced locksmith 15 minutes to gain access to the safe using common locksmithing tools. The Cobalt Model SB-01C is a 1.0 cubic foot model with a 2 hour fireproof rating, a glass relocker and is burglary rated. It can be ordered with a combination dial lock or a convenient electronic keypad lock. This fireproof safe features a tri-spoke handle and massive chrome plate steel and stationary bolts. The Cobalt SB series also comes with a lifetime fireproof warranty. The Cobalt SB-02C model has a 2.19 cubic foot capacity and also carries a 2 hour fireproof rating. It also features a remote glass relocker, heavy-duty ball bearing hinges and 1 adjustable shelf. This fireproof safe is available with a combination dial lock (S & G Group II) or an easy to use electronic keypad lock. For even more storage capacity, the Cobalt SB-03C fireproof safe features 3.43 feet of storage, 2 adjustable shelves, a 2 hour fireproof rating and is burglary rated. It also features a remote glass relocker, a tri-spoke handle and heavy duty ball bearing hinges. It is available with either a mechanical combination dial or an electronic keypad locking mechansim. FireKing also produces fireproof safes with impact ratings. Impact ratings ensure that the safe's contents are not damaged during a fire when the roof or walls collapse on the safe. The Fire King Model KV714 features a 1.6 cubic foot storage capacity, an electronic keypad lock, an automatic relocker, 3 way bolt work and 1 adjustable shelf. The FireKing model KV2015 features a UL Class 350 fireproof and impact rating, an electronic digital lock, 3 way boltwork, automatic re-locking and 2 adjustable shelves. This fireproof safe also features heavy duty hinges for smooth operation and an integrated door hardplate. About the Author
