A guide to keeping down your gas bill

If you're looking for ways to save on your gas bill - and aren't we all! - then you've come to the right place. You'll be pleased to hear that there are several quick and easy ways to improve your home's gas energy usage and help to reduce your monthly gas bills.

Wear more clothes in winter. An extra layer of clothing can save you a huge amount on your gas bill, as you just won't feel the cold as much. You don't have to go around your house in a sheepskin jacket with the heating off in winter, although if you did, it would probably save you a lot of money!

Reducing your gas bills isn't just about turning down your thermostat, try setting your hot water to a lower temperature too. You'll be less likely to scald yourself when the hot water tap is running and you'll be saving money too.

By changing the way you use your dishwasher and washing machine, you could save some money each month. With your washing amchine, instead of choosing the hot wash and rise function, go for the hot wash with cool rinse, or hot wash with warm rinse options as these use less energy. With your dishwasher, try not to use the dish drying option as this uses hot water, energy and money. Your dishes may take a little longer to dry on their own, but it won't have cost you a penny.

Check your windows and door edges for drafts. If any cold air is getting in then ht air is getting out. Replace any mouldings that need replacing, and try using a simple but effective draft-excluder under your doors.

If you have to go away for any period of time over winter, you are advised not to turn your heating off to prevent the dangers of freezing and burst water pipes. Some people then go on to leave their heating up far too high - remember that you're not trying to keep your house warm, just the pipes. Turn your thermostat own to 60 when you leave, which should protect your pipes, without costing you the earth.

Check with your local authority and gas supplier to see if any grants are available in your area towards better insulation and more efficient central heating systems. Grants have been introduced in the UK to help those on lower incomes, those with children and the elderly, so check to see if you qualify.
