Emergency Food and Water

Submitted by Eric Holm
Thu, 2 Apr 2009

Emergency food and water are important components of any emergency preparedness plan and survival kit. In times of disasters, you may not be
able to have any access to water or food supplies, even if you have a lot of money to spend. The best way to ensure that you and members of your family, including your pets, can live through emergency situations or calamities like floods, hurricanes, power outages, earthquakes and fires is to prepare in advance emergency food supplies and water storage units that could last from 72 hours and are portable too. Even if emergency rescue units and paramedics do not reach your home or area immediately, you can be assured that every member of your household will not get sick, or even die, of starvation or dehydration.

In preparing for emergency food and water, one should first think of the
needs of each member of the family. If you have an infant or a senior in your home, you have to take into consideration their special needs while preparing your emergency food. Next, you need to prepare an emergency water storage plan that will not only provide clean water for drinking but also, if applicable, for hygienic and sanitation purposes. Lastly, it is vital that you carefully choose the type of food that you will store in your survival kits. Aside from preparing the usual foods eaten by your family, you also need to choose ones that have longer shelf life.

In order to make the job of organizing or planning emergency food and water
kits easy for the whole family, it may be a wise idea to invest in food
ration bars or ready-to-eat meals. These do not only have longer shelf life, but also are also easier to store and carry in case you need to evacuate or leave your home. Since it would be impossible to have a six-month supply of clean water, your emergency food supplies kit should also contain portable water filtration system so you can safely use other sources, such as rainwater and even water stored in your hot-water tank or pool.

Other important tools that you need to add in your emergency food and water
supplies are utensils, mechanical can opener, and even cooking units and
supplies. Since power and gas may not be available after a disaster strikes, you need to make sure that you have equipment that can help you boil water or cook food properly to ensure your families health.
