Are Americans getting healthy by spending 23 billion dollars a year on vitamins and supplements?

Submitted by tommy martin

There are so many vitamins and supplements available at the local drug store that a person can become overwhelmed by the decisions. Vitamin A, B, C, D, E or B12 are just a few. Which Vitamin is for which ailment? Should a person eat one of each a day? It is comforting to know that many doctors like William Sears MD, and Richard DuBois MD are recommending good fruits and Vegetables for preventative measures. There are People who require a specific vitamin to replace the lack thereof in their own bodies but most people take vitamins and supplements out of good conscience in hopes of avoiding a catastrophic ailment.
There is the argument that today's fruits and vegetables lack the nutrients they once had because of soil depletion. There is also concern over the pesticides used on the plants. Who knows what to do with all of this contradictory information? The Internet has become a viable tool for educating ourselves in the area of healthy eating and nutrition. There is however, a plethora of websites offering information on foods and nutrition. How does a person find a web site that is trust worthy? There are a few out there that are truly seeking the truth and are not trying to sell you a diet program. There is a lurking fear of human illnesses among us. No one wants to be diagnosed with one of the bad diseases. There definitely is a rise in the occurrence of cancer, heart disease, diabetes, and stroke. We should be concerned with what we are eating. We all don't work in asbestos factories and coalmines but we are exposed everyday to processed foods and meats treated with antibiotics. We owe it to ourselves to spend some time reading or surfing the web to become aware of the dangers of what we are consuming.
There is nothing in this world as valuable as your health. There isn't enough money in the US treasury that can buy a clean bill of health. There is something as simple as regulating what goes into the mouth that can have a profound effect on the health and wellness of each individual.
