Getting Fit After the Christmas FestivitiesSubmitted by Johnkad Tue, 24 Feb 2009
Christmas celebrations are now finished for another year and a lot of people are looking at the New Year with optimism and good intensions, with the most prominent focus undoubtedly being upon a healthier lifestyle. A healthier lifestyle can mean many things depending on the individual and could be anything from (but not restricted to); Stopping smoking, cutting down on alcohol consumption, eating a better diet, exercising and even relieving stress or reducing working hours. Anyone of these things can have a positive effect on an individuals physical and mental wellbeing.
The festive holiday season is a period of indulgence, over indulgence in fact. Usually we all over do it and feel a bit sluggish as a result afterwards. It is no surprise then that the month of January sees some of the highest rates of new gym membership sign up’s and sales in health and fitness related products soar. Unfortunately, a lot of people who embark on new fitness challenges and regimes do not know about, or understand the complexities of proper exercise and the needs of the body. People can make the mistake of going hell for leather without any consideration to warming the body and muscles up and down effectively. This is the most common cause of injury with gym goers and with people who exercise occasionally. Strains and sprains are the most frequently occurring injuries, usually down to the fact muscles and tendons haven’t been warmed up or because they are put under too much stress and become torn or ruptured. Depending on the severity of the injury, the pain can be intense and the healing time can even be extensive. As with any kind of injury, initial first aid is important to prevent the condition from worsening. For the initial treatment of sprains and strains there is a procedure known as ‘RICE’ which is; R - rest the injury, I - apply ice or a cold compress, C - compress the injury, and E – elevate the injured part. This process should be enough to provide initial symptom relief but further treatment may still be required by medical professionals or simply by means of strapping and support whilst the injury heals. Following an injury, extra support in that area is often required when participating in sports. Often simple strapping such as a crepe bandage does not provide enough assistance so it makes sense to purchase a specialised sports support, ideally on which has been specifically designed to assist the type of injury or weakness it is being applied to. Popular with the professionals, athletes worldwide have been succeeding with Mueller products since the early 1960s. Mueller’s world-class products are design to treat athletes at all levels and are not just available to pro’s, but also to every day athletes and champions participating in sport, be it in a local team or as an individual in the gym.
