What Is An Endodontist?

For many tooth-related problems, patients often turn to general dentists for a solution. Sometimes, more complicated problems may arise that are important to address. Infections or diseases of the tooth can lead to necessary intervention by dental specialists. Patients in need of root canals, root canal retreatments or endodontic surgery are referred to endodontists.

Endodontics originates from the Greek words "endo" and "odont," meaning "inside" and "tooth," respectively. Endodontists are dentists that specialize in the treatment of problems inside the tooth, otherwise known as the pulp, which consists of connective tissues, nerves and blood vessels that provide a supply of blood to the tooth. If the pulp of the tooth is injured or diseased, endodontic treatment may be necessary to save the tooth.

Endodontists are required to undergo specialty training for an additional two years after four years of dental school. Although general dentists may be able to perform certain endodontic treatments, more complicated endodontic procedures such as root canal treatments, retreatments and apicoectomies may require the expertise of an endodontist.
