Debt Advice: Cutting Back on Food Spending

Submitted by David Salt

With the financial troubles that are currently affecting the global economic market, more and more of the general public are suddenly feeling the pinch of having to cut back on spending. Debt advice has rarely been considered more important. This can be a difficult time, as luxuries are forfeited -however, there are a number of ways that money can be saved, without cutting out the things that are important. One of the easiest ways to do this is cutting back on unnecessary spending on food.

One way is cutting out very small, unnecessary expenditures. There are a number of ways this can be done, and they are all very simple. One example is entertaining at home, instead of meeting friends and going out for coffee. Meeting friends in coffee shops can be expensive: each customer will buy at least one drink, and may end up spending money on overpriced slices of cake and buns. If friends meet at home to socialise, these expenses could be cut drastically, especially if these social gatherings had previously taken place a number of times a week. Small expenses such as this can add up to a large amount of money, that could easily be used elsewhere. When considered, it is obvious: in a chain coffee shop, a cup of coffee is likely to be close to costing three pounds. However, this is more like the price for a whole jar at a supermarket. The same can be said for lunch: if only a small amount of time is given for a lunch break from work, people are likely to rush out and buy expensive sandwiches from shops. Add on a piece of fruit, a drink and a packet of crisps, in order to make a lunch that will sustain until the evening, and the customer is probably looking at spending over five pounds. Clearly this will add up, if it is done almost every day.

There are many ways to cut down during the recession, but cutting out important essentials does not have to be part of this. It is much better, surely, to cut down on unnecessary small expenditures. The old cliché definitely rings true here: if you look after the pennies, the pounds will look after themselves.
