More about Spread BettingSubmitted by David Salt Fri, 23 Oct 2009
In the wide world of sports, there are many different games played every day all over the world. These games vary in their method of play and rules. With such a variety of sports out there in the world, it is not wonder that a variety also exists in the types of sports wagers that can be placed upon the games. One widely form of sports bet is known as spread betting.
Spread betting began during the 1940's. Its official roots can be pointed to a maths teacher from the United States. Charles McNeil developed the point spread as another way in which to bet on a sports competition. No longer did people merely bet on a winner or loser but they could place their wagers on the point spread or the expected different in the score of the competition. Spread betting later migrated across the Atlantic to the United Kingdom during the 1980's. After its introduction to sports betting, it became popular and has seen widespread growth. As time has passed, more and more residents of the United Kingdom are placing point spread wagers. With spread betting, you are placing your money on more than who you believe will win the sports competition or who you think will lose the competition. Prior to an upcoming sports competition, a spread is published. This spread relates to the possible outcomes that could occur from the sporting competition in question. Spread bets are placed on these outcomes. Bettors wager their money on whether or not the outcome will happen. The outcome could fall below the published spread or perhaps above it. Spread betting brought a whole other dimension to the world of sports betting. The creation of spread betting helped to equalize the chances of two opponents facing a sports competition. This helped in situations where one team was an overwhelming favourite in the competition. Without the spread, bettors would merely place their wagers on the favourite team. Spread betting can occur in many different places. Online sports books provide services to people wishing to place spread bets as do local bookmakers. About the Author
