10 Ways to Lose at Poker (7)

Submitted by David Salt

If you have read the previous six articles in this series and you have started applying them, your game should have started to show some improvements already.

You will be paying close attention to the other players and trying to understand what makes them tick; you will be paying careful attention to poker statistics and pot odds; you will be avoiding giving too much away about yourself; you will be staying stone cold sober; you will be highly motivated to win; and you will have emotionally detached yourself from your bankroll. Here we will look at the eighth way to lose.

The eighth way to lose is all about table selection. By table selection we mean selecting the type of players against whom you will be playing. This is vital and can be more difficult online than in real life. First of all you need to be comfortable with the other players; by comfortable we do not mean cosy, but you should be confident that you are not playing with a load of crooks, cheats and charlatans. There is nothing like a bit of paranoia to totally destroy your game play. Also you need to be assured that they are comfortable with you. Just as you need to trust them, it is important to you that they also have trust in you.

Relative poker ability is the other factor you should consider. It is vital to your game and game development that you play with people whose overall ability is just a little better than yours. Surely, you might protest, it is easier to win against poorer players. That is a serious error that many players make, for instance

* Weak players are unpredictable
* Weak players make individual mistakes which, when combined, turn into correct play and make it impossible for you to play correctly
* Playing weak players can make you complacent

On the other hand, playing with players who are much stronger than you is an obvious error unless you are determined to lose.

Sitting at the wrong table is a great way to lose at poker.
