10 Ideas On Effective Business NetworkingSubmitted by jhoncaden Thu, 25 Jun 2009
Effective business networking is not rocket science. Listed below are 10 great ways to help you become a star networker.
1.Be yourself. You always want to make a good first impression and being yourself is a great way to do that. Don't act like something that you're not. You are attempting to build a business relationship with this person. Having your client disappointed later because they found out that you weren't truthful is not a good business practice. 2.Be clear. You need to be aware of exactly what it is that you do and the reason behind it. Why are you unique compared to others? You need to be able to project these things in a clear and simple manner. 3.Pay attention. Make eye contact with the person you are speaking with. Do not allow yours eyes to dart around the room as if you are looking for a better client or a way out. Ask open ended questions such as, "How long have you been doing this?" and "How did you get started?" Showing interest in an individual will help you get more referrals. 4.Dress Up. Being over dressed at an event can definitely work in your favor. Dress a little nicer than you expect everyone else to be. If business deals are being made, generally the person that is better dress garners more respect. 5.Spark your interests. Visit with more than one group. Not all of them will be enjoyable for you since everyone has different interests. Find some that share yours and observe how the people interact with each other. Do they all seem to get along well? Are you hearing more positive comments than negative ones? 6.Set goals. Why are you going to this networking event? What are you expecting to take away from it? Know the type of meeting you will be attending beforehand. This will help you to set realistic goals for yourself. Are you going there to learn or just to make contacts? 7.The 2 F's. Follow up and follow through. Follow up with the people that you do meet. Let them know that you enjoyed speaking with them and set up a future meeting where you can toss around ideas. Follow through with any referrals that you've been given. 8.Arrive early. Some of the best contacts are created before the gathering. Be early so that you can position yourself near the entrance. This will allow you to introduce yourself to people as they arrive. They may view you as an "Honorary Welcome Committee", making them more comfortable about talking to you throughout the event. 9.Stay late. You will find that people are more relaxed once the event is over, making it easier to talk with them. 10. Exude confidence. Being viewed as a confident individual by other people leads them to believe that you are confident in your work. Remembering names and offering your services to the group are two ways to get you noticed and show your confidence. Utilising these 10 tips on effective networking will not only help you to improve your social skills, but will expand your contact list as well.
