A Few Tips In Sending a Balikbayan BoxSubmitted by Timothy Gomez Tue, 7 Jul 2009
Sending a Balikbayan box to the philippines isn't as easy as it looks to be. There are several things that OFWs or overseas Filipino workers would have to take note before sending in a big bulky box to the philippines. The first thing that they would have to do is to list down the things they would want to send to their families in the Philippines. Usually, OFWs would ask their families and loved ones in the Philippines of what they would want. Another is thinking about the things that they would need in the house such as toiletries or canned goods. Its important to list this all down so as to not forget the stuff you want to send when shopping. Another purpose is that your can see the amount of goods you would be sending, this is important so as to visualize the amount or weight of goods that you'll be sending.
After buying your stuff (this usually takes several trips to grocery stores, clothing stores, and gift shops so keep in mind to take more time in preparing your box), buying the box that you'll be using is your next step. The box should be enough to accommodate the goods you would want to send to your families, but not too big. Another is the built of the box. Inspection of the box is necessary, if its enough to take on the weight of your goods. There are Filipino shops in airports that provides boxes particularly built for sending a Balikbayan box to the philippines. These boxes are made to conform with airport baggage policies. But if you want, you could use other kinds of used boxes, its far less cheaper than those bought in stores. Also, make sure to use plenty of tapes to secure the box shut. Labels is also important. One particular label is the address. Though there are stamps that indicates where the box should be sent, OFWs would usually write the address on the box itself so as to make it easier for delivery personnel to see the address. If there are fragile objects inside the box, you should also indicate this on the box and on the courier service you'll be using. But this isn't enough to ensure the safety of your items. One way to protect fragile items such as drinking glasses or lamps is covering it by using papers, or old newspapers. This is one of the cheapest way to ensure the safety of the item rather than using bubble-wraps. The last tip is with the courier company. Ensure that the courier company you'll be using is known for their excellent expertise in delivering balikbayan box to the philippines. One example is LBC. Usually, courier offices would ask you if the package is to be delivered by air or by sea. Delivery by sea freighters are slow buy cheap whereas air transport is faster but more expensive. Another thing to consider is the weight of your box. Courier companies usually puts out a limit of the weight of boxes they would carry. If the weight of your box exceeds those of courier companies' restriction, you will either take off several items or pay the exceeding amount of weight. About the Author
