Chauffeurs are considered specialist drivers who work for companies or private individuals who require or prefer transportation services with a touch of style and elegance. They are often associated with limousines and other luxury cars. Not all chauffeurs work for an employer, though. Some offer on-demand services wherein they provide driving and car services for a short period of time especially to tourists who don't have private transport in the place there are traveling in. The nature of their tasks makes their job distinct among other driver jobs.
In general, chauffeurs not only drive for their employer, they also clean the car and keep it in a good condition. Also, their service is more personal, involving assisting passengers get in and out of the car as well as carrying baggage. Their tasks also include picking up their employers and providing travel information. Business people, commercial company, VIPs, celebrities and high profile private individuals usually employ them. Because of this, chauffeurs are required to look presentable by wearing neat attire at all times.
Drivers who are looking into this kind of job may have to conform to individual client's preferences, as there are no specific entry requirements yet. Basically, interested drivers need to have a driver's license and be free of driving penalty points. Certification from driving institutes and years of experience in driving would also be advantage points. Other routine requirements that are present in almost all jobs are being physically fit and having no criminal records. When it comes to skills and attitude, they have to have good communication skills, be well mannered and be very knowledgeable of the local routes and destinations. They also need to be punctual, patient and flexible to abrupt changes in itinerary and long waiting times.
There are many drivers who have this as their dream job because of the perk they can get from the job. Some chauffeurs simply enjoy the opportunity to travel more and to meet new high profile and interesting people. Others enjoy competitive pays and even additional tips. They may also enjoy employee-sponsored living quarters.
Among other driver jobs, this could be one of the kinds that are on-call. Depending on the lifestyle or routine of the employer, chauffeurs may have to be available anytime their employers need them even during weekends and holidays. Schedules could change anytime and sometimes, pick up times could be given at a short notice.
