Creation of Jobs in Renewable Energy Expected with Stimulus Funding

Submitted by Jj Jamson
Sat, 26 Sep 2009

In the midst of the harsh economic condition stemming from the mortgage industry crunch, the Obama administration has targetted renewable energy as a priority, along with health care and education, for long term investment.

The United States is not the only country that has prioritized renewable energy as a matter of public policy. Spain has a $30 billioin publicly-supported initiative for a green economy. About 25% of Spain's electricity is generated from renewable sources, compared with about 7% in the US. With their success, President Obama looks to make Spain as a model to keep an eye on.

Again, the Obama administration has pinpointed energy as one of its primary objectives, so the US is not without its own efforts to achieve self-sustaining energy supply. In New Mexico, there's a statewide effort to install solar photovoltaic (PV) systems in various schools to capture solar power and convert them into electricity. $10 million of stimulus funds will be awarded to several schools to install 100 KW PV systems to save on electric bills and create renewable energy jobs.

In Hayward, California, the AC Transit (public transport authorities for western Alameda and Contra Costa Counties) is looking to expand their solar energy capability. They're installing more PV modules in their Central Maintenance Facility. These modules are used to generate "green" hydrogen for their buses.

In Massachusetts, a project is underway at the John J. Carroll Water Treatment Plant to install solar panels for power use within the plant. The project is funded by federal stimulus money and should begin bidding for contract before the end of the year.

Alternative energy jobs are coming. With the help of stimulus funding, states, cities, municipalities, and public authority organization in charge of transit and power generation are actively planning infrastructure and energy projects to improve their services. These projects will create and/or save jobs in construction, maintenance, and other department. Job seekers with project management certification and/or experience should to find attractive employment in the near future.
