A brilliant manager is someone who can guide and direct an entire team to success and does this with apparent ease. It is a person who enjoys leading others, providing training, is there to help his co-workers succeed and does not shy away from all the responsibilities handed to him/her.
If you are like many eager employees aiming to launch a career as a team leader, foreman, supervisor, or manager, you probably have plenty of ambition but lack the necessary strategies to take you to the managerial level. If that is the case, you only have one choice: you will need to enroll in management business courses. Companies are only interested in hiring highly skilled and qualified employees because they want their business to succeed. When they check out candidates for a receptionist or a filing clerk position, they may be a little less strict and trust that the recruit will evolve once taken under their wing, but when it comes to managerial posts, they will not stray from their principles. The stakes are just too high and an incompetent, untrained manger can ruin an entire department, which would be devastating not only for the employees working in that section, but, possibly, the entire company. Formal, extensive training programs for managers have become highly necessary in today's competitive business market. Without them, few would be moving up the company ranks. Being a manager is all about leadership. Managers require planning, communication and organizational skills so they can control or direct people or resources in a group, all while respecting the values that were established by the company that hired them. Leadership is setting a new direction or vision for a group and offer constructive instructions that can easily be followed and acted upon. Research studies have indicated that leadership skills can be developed once a solid foundation has been established. There are four basic management skills anyone must master to have any success in a management job. This basis entails four basic skills: planning, organizing, directing and controlling. Planning Planning is the first and most important skill managers have to master, and will vary from task to task. Some assignments will demand a lot of planning, while other jobs may only require a few minutes of time, just enough to write up a single list of easy-to-follow instructions. There are different levels of planning. Strategic planning includes tactics and operations, while disaster and crisis planning involves directions for emergency situations. Succession planning is concerned with the replacement of key employees in case they leave or suddenly die and compensation planning revolves around salaries, hourly wages and raises. Organizing Managers must be able to organize teams, tasks, and projects in a timely, effective and efficient manner. Although there is a difference between running a small team project and organizing a new division, the basics remain the same. Planning the work and organizing it are two tasks that will usually overlap. Where planning concentrates mostly on what needs to be accomplished, organization is more operational and focuses more on how to get the work done best. Directing Once the work has been planned and organized, managers will have to direct their teams to get the work done. They will start by clarifying the desired goals so everyone in the team understands clearly what their role is and what needs to be done. Controlling Activities have to be monitored and controlled, and the actual progress has to match up to the original plan. If the project runs behind, it must be determined why, and modifications will need to be made. Sometimes a pep talk is enough to speed up the production line. If nobody gets sick, competition does not lower their prices and no other disturbing influences shake up the mission, then managers will only have to monitor. A smooth project is an anomaly, but that should not frighten top managers. Through the extended manager courses and training they received they are prepared for all possible situations, even if things are so bad they have to roll up their sleeves and lend a helping hand.
