The privilege to be a driver in Ontario is given by a driver's license. You are to make certain that you have it on you before you start driving. An Ontario province driver's license is a plastic card with a digital photography of its holder and his or her signature. It also hold such information as name of the owner, address, date of birth, female/male data, height, date of driving license's issuance, date when it expires, different signs signifying the modes of transport that you are permitted to drive and several conditions. For example, the condition marked as "X" stands for a commitment to be in spectacles or contact lenses when you drive a car. In addition, contemporary driver's licenses are provided with a magnetic information strip that demonstrates the whole history of their holders' driving experience. The opportunity to be an accompanying driver is rendered to the drivers who have a red bar with four white dots below their photo.
There are 2 indispensable requirements of driving in Ontario. First, a driver must be at least 16 years old. Second, he or she must be an owner of a valid Ontario province driver license. After official immigration to Ontario you have sixty days of the date of stay permit's issue to apply for a driving license. Moreover, you have a possibility to visit a driving school in the place you live to reduce the period between exams for acquiring the next level of driver's permit.
In general, there are three types of driving permits in Ontario: G1, G2 and G (also known as G-full).
Level One - Ontario Driver license G1
To start training in driving skills you should apply for Level One. Remember that you must be aged at the minimum 16 years old. In Level One there are six important conditions that young drivers must remember:
- A G1 driver doesn't have the right to drive on his own, he should always be accompanied by a professional driver with minimum 4 years' driving experience. This person is obliged to have a red bar with four white spots below his photo on his driver's license. Moreover, he or she must sit next to the G1 driver on the front seat. What is also significant, he or she is obliged to meet the conditions of G-full drivers' licenses concerning alcohol content in the blood that should not be higher than 0,05 per cent.
- An accompanying driver should be the only person sitting near to you in the front seat.
- Alcohol beverages' consumption is strictly prohibited if you are planning to drive. The alcohol content in the blood of the G1 driver must be equal to zero.
- Driving is permitted in the period of time from five a.m. till 12 a.m..
- The car driven by a G-1 driver should not carry more passengers than it's determined by its technical features. Everyone has to fasten a seat belt in order to guarantee the safety during the trip.
- A G1 driver cannot drive in the Ontario's "400-series" highways and high-speed expressways{ including| such as| such as the following:|, for example,|, for instance,| the Don Valley Parkway, the Gardiner Expressway, the Queen Elizabeth Way, the E.C. Row Expressway and so on. The full list of such highways and expressways is given in the Driver's Handbook.
The Second Level - Ontario Driving permit G2
Getting a G2 driving license is usually preceded by completing an intensive driving course in Ontario region. Level two will take you at least one year. A G2 driver obtains an opportunity to drive at any time during daylight hours and night, as well as a chance to drive alone, without an accompanying professional driver. One more plus is the possibility to drive on any road in Ontario province. Nevertheless, there are four obligatory conditions for a G2 driver to keep in mind:
- The alcohol content in the blood must be equal to 0, which means that a G2 driver is not permitted to drink alcohol beverages before driving.
- All the passengers in the car should fasten seat belts and the vehicle must not be overcrowded.
And there are two more requirements that are to be taken into consideration only between midnight and five a.m.:
- A G2 driver is permitted to transport only 1 passenger who is 19 or younger during the period of the first six months of the date of G2 license's issuance.
- After this period of time is over, a G2 driver is permitted to carry three or less passengers aged 19 years old or younger until he or she gets a G-full driving license or till he or she turns 20.
Note that the last 2 conditions are not taken into consideration when a G2 driver is accompanied by a G-full driver whose driver license includes a red bar with four white dots or when the passengers that are aged 19 and younger are the driver's immediate relatives.
Level Three - Ontario Driving license G-Full
The minimum period of time from the beginning of driving in the level one till the date of getting a G driver's permit is twenty months. In order to get full driving privileges a G2 driver has to take a special examination that demonstrated the level of your driving skills. After a G2 driver passed this exam with success he or she becomes a G-driver.
Pay attention to the expiration date of your G1 or G2 driver license. In case you will not complete the Graduated Licensing Program during 5 years of the date of beginner license's issuance your level one or level two the license will expire. You have to take an appropriate test before the expiration date. Otherwise you'll have to re-qualify for the level corresponding to your driver license. After completing the test you'll get an in-depth analysis of all your mistakes. In case of failure you will have a chance to re-take the examination but the period between exams should be at least 10 days.
